Janet had her own groove. Choreographers like Paula Abdul and Toni Basil had a BIG influence in this era, everyone used 808 synth, and the dancers in this video are from 80s break dancing movies, some of the coolest stuff around at the time. So to call her a blueprint is a little harsh. She was just a part of it all.
This is the era when videos were like little movies. They actually took their time and created something. No one is making videos like this. Janet is just timeless❤❤
@@cmarie6157but you got to realize that they both learned from Papa Joe! They grew up in this. They grew up in TV, movies, and on variety shows doing skits, etc... I'm not denying that Michael was one of the first to do it. My point is only that Janet wasn't copying Michael. Janet was just evolving as she naturally as she would have being the second, or at the very least as equally as talented a child as Michael. As for my comment of Michael being one of the first is that people seem to forget that Queen also attempted this theatrical approach to their performances. But the minor bit of blowback they got let them know they could not go as far as Freddie Mercury wanted to go, I assure you!
Chris Brown is really the only one that does story/dance videos now and even he's been quiet with em. Nobody beats Janet and Michael videos though. They used to lock down a time on national TV just to release their videos. A very special time
Not sure of people of this generation understand just how much talent is on screen with janet in this video. Not just random dancers. Great salute to Cab Callaway along with showing respect to the Nicholas Brothers. and that's just some of the crazy talent that's on screen in this video.
And will never be seen again. This was a great time to be alive!!! I wish I paid more attention to the time era I was in.. so fun and carefree such a beautiful time.
@@WakandaBabe It does make me wonder if putting all this talent in these videos is even worth it with this generation. since they dont take much interest in history. speaking in general terms .Seems that they dont care much about the underlying message or quality of performance in the entertainment industry as a whole after seeing some of the reaction videos

Yes i was in high school when it dropped and couldn’t get enough - of course control got me started on janet but rhythm nation 1814 took her into the stratosphere- she’s on my bucket list to see in concert
I’ll say it again, this is such a classy video. Mixes modern (90’s) sounds with so much love for older performers like Cab Calloway, Cyd Charisse, & the Nicholas Brothers. How awesome that so many legends were still around to take part in this video! Nothing as upbeat as this in 2023.
My favorite moment in this video is when the great Cyd Charisse comes out of the store and dances with Janet. (@2:47) This fan of MGM musicals was beyond words at this moment. So great that Janet honored Miss Charisse, as well as the Nicholas Brothers and Cab Calloway (and Michael Kidd, who choreographed many MGM musicals back in the day and directed some of the scenes) They are no longer with us, but what an amazing tribute.
Janet killed this! She did a video paying homage to some of the best dancers of the golden era. Rest peacefully, Harold Nicholas, Fayard Nicholas, Cyd Charisse, and Cab Calloway. There is also a version of this video featuring late great rapper Heavy D, who was also a badass dancer himself.
You know what I love about Janet; She's in her own element. She made a name on her own. She's not Michael Jackson's sister; she's Janet Jackson. Both iconic in their own way. Neither dependent on one another for greatness. Both did something amazing and mesmerizing on their own and expressing their own individuality. THAT'S WHEN YOU BOTH ARE THE BEST AT WHAT YOU DO. What a blessing to us.
@mik7564 I strongly agree with you❤ She didn't have to follow no one's coattails at all to get to where she is now😀 That's why she declined to duet with Michael around the Rhythm Nation era, until she made a name for herself, and look at her now!! SHE GOT HER OWN LEGACY🥰 Ain't God good😇
This was my favorite video back in the day. I love how she paid homage to Cab Calloway who paved the way for music artist such as herself and countless others.
@@clairedaniels1877 they are in both versions. She goes inside the building and the two older guys step out dancing. When the song breaks one is still dancing that was the younger brother that married Dorothy Dandridge
@@jaelak8223, one of the creators of RU-vid admitted a big inspiration for making the site was because he wanted to see Janet Jackson's nip slip on stage but couldn't find it online (it was like 2004), so he hoped someone would upload it to RU-vid one day That's why Janet Jackson having a RU-vid channel is poetic to see lol
@@jaelak8223 pretty much if it wasn't for Janet there would be no RU-vid. He came up with the idea because of the massive request to see the super bowl 2004 again over and over because of Janet
@@RaelynnOnToast, you're right, the site was created for Janet Jackson's boobs, which do have a cameo in this video so it's still poetic they have their own channel lol
I can't with Janet, her short films are beyond! This woman is undoubtedly the Queen of Pop, Blueprint of Pop, Empress of Pop, and the one and only deserving of, Queen of Music ;) Periodt
Her career has an unusual history... Consider an icon, and trendsetter, considering she was competing with Michael around the same time, yet fighting for a role in pop history... She deserves the same accolades as Madonna..I was with her starting with the debut album..and danced my ass off with Control...
In my humble opinion, most of these labels are absurd…I wish Janets fans would focus more on her being the blueprint…that says a lot in itself. These titles mean absolutely nothing to her and in some ways it stifles her many other talents and cross over appeal. If indeed you have to give Janet a Queen title…let it be over her own creation RHYTHM NATION…sis has a pledge and everything about how she was gonna dominate in all areas. Get into that!
Janet Jackson's vocal dexterity was tailor-made for the Flyte Tyme sound. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are such remarkable songwriters. One of my favourite Janet's songs. This joint is off the hinges.
One of the best music videos, in any style, ever. A beautiful homage to the greats! Loved seeing Cyd Charisse, the Nicolas brothers, and of course, the one the only, Cab. I think this video alone gave every dancer in LA a paycheck, and well earned. Janet, you are one classy lady.
The entire album benefited from the very popular new jack swing sound that was pioneered by music producer Teddy Riley. Many R&B and hip-hop artists began using it in the late 1980s leading to some very memorable and cool dance music. 'Rhythm Nation 1814' is no doubt Janet Jackson's most commercially successful album.
she showed love and appreciation to so many entertainers that came before her in this video, now Victoria Monet shows love to her in the new video 🎶Alright ❤❤ artist are so important and impactful ♥️♥️
This video/ song makes me so emotional…I’m crying tears…was such a happy time during my youth…I was OBSESSED with Janet and her music and dancing during this time. Tears also bc I can’t get those times back but grateful bc I’ll always remember it.
I used to watch these music videos and dance in my room, imagining that I was doing the choreography along with Janet and her crew (or whoever was in the video). Yes, it was a wonderful time in my youth also. I definitely understand the emotion and excitement. At least we have the memories, and You Tube. 🙂
Now that im older can appreciate the stars that came out to make this video even more! Cab Calloway, the Nicholas Brothers, and Cyd Charisse who was giving legs and hip for days! I was truly privileged to have lived through this era when this music and the video first came out!
I've always enjoyed this video. It's upbeat, fun, stylish and tells a story. Janet at her best! Plus an appearance by legend Cab Calloway. I hope one day it can be remastered in 1080p or 4K but I don't know if it was shot on film or up-scalable. 🎙🎹🎶
Janet was saying, "don't forget were we came from" with this video. Reminded me about Cab Calloway (amazing artist) in the Blues Brothers. Man, she is so amazing.
Omg, can you imagine being alive in 2024 knowing that you were in a music video with freaking Cab Calloway?! I know a lot of people wouldn't be wowed by that but to me, it's amazing!
Come on. Are you Kidding Me? Legendary for Sure. I danced tap, jazz, and ballet from 6-12th grade, and in My research Cab Callaway was a major highlight in our history. Our people always manage to look damn good despite the hell we be going thru at that time. ie: Zoot Suits.....ya gotta love'em. Classic
One of my favorite Janet songs/videos. Cab Calloway AND the Nicholas Brothers were waaaaay before my time, but I have always loved their work and style even as a young child! Dance royalty💜💜💜
Don't forget dance icon Cyd Charisse, she appears at 3:00. Another fun fact one of the dancers in the window behind Cyd & Janet is one of the inventors of voguein...he appears again at the end of the clip when everyone is dancing and he vogues.
Janet is such a multifaceted entertainer I swear, kudos to Victoria Monet for recognizing and acknowledging a legend. Early in her career who knew that she would be just as big a star as her big brother one day. She is the OG queen of choreography and her brother was the king. Love that Victoria's new video pays homage to them both. Like them she is a trailblazer and game changer.
I will use this song and video as an example of why my loyalty is to the 90s. As a musician (_drummer_), DJ, & producer, I appreciate the creativity & Love for the art. If you notice from 3:29 to 6:35, it's all extended remix. That's over 3 minutes. Enough time for another song. This is what was done back then. Artists/producers went into the studio & had fun with the records. Us DJs Loved that. 2 to 4 different remixes of a song, different producers, more than likely over 5 min a piece. Unfortunately, no one does this anymore. To me, this never gets old. It stays current.
Indeed. It was like a mini musical. One you can watch over and over because its content and quality compelled you to do just that. Being compelled by the content to experience it again and again are what classics do.
This is my favorite music video ever made. Cyd Charise, Cab… The Nicholas Brothers… and Janet herself. I smile and get tears in my eyes whenever I watch this.
Yep, she and her brother wrote the game and lived the game Because MJ created the game! There is only one other artist that came slightly close to the genius that the Jacksons created in videos. Missy Elliott…. Let me know if you can think of anybody else, because even Prince didn’t do all this.
When music and icons were included in. Now its just shaking butts and no sense "songs" that mean nothing. Thank you Janet for including those that made the way for all of us. ❤
*I remember being only 11 years of age in 1989 and overwhelmingly fascinated with this Artistry. It was like a whole movie with a clever climax that ended well. I mostly saw the video on MTV, VH-1 and BET, but with the Heavy D version w/rap. So today you know how I feel... Pure Nostalgia! 😌 One of my childhood playgrounds🤗🤭*
Mad props to Janet for having the respect to honor and include 3 Giants of their day in this video - Cyd Charisse (2:53), the Nicholas Brothers (3:58), and Cab Calloway at the very end. Cyd Charisse - what a classy, beautiful, and sexy woman (at age 68 no less in this video!) with the great strutting and dance moves they gave her here! The epitome of elegance. And the Nicholas Brothers! Just a shame they didn't get more than 10 seconds of pretty pedestrian "blink-and-you-miss-it" tap moves, considering they performed what even Fred Astaire considered the greatest dance routine ever on film (look it up - "Nicholas Brothers in Stormy Weather;" prepare to have your mind blown). They certainly looked like they could have gone on and done at least 20-30 seconds of breathtaking tap here! What a shame and missed opportunity!
The production, Choreography and sheer fun had in this video will live in my mind for the rest of my life. Nobody does it like this family and No other woman comes close to touching the lasting impact Ms. Jackson has made on music and entertainment. Debate ya Auntie.
I absolutely love this song, it puts me in such a good mood! 🥰 And the music video is fantastic! 😍 Nobody does it like this anymore. Such a piece of art. ✨️🖤
Janet we love you! All of us genX girls who grew up with you on good times, then different strokes, and watched you make your mark in music- i remember being 12 and listening to control and you’ve been part of my 12 yr old tween heart since and then in high school with rhythm nation- you’re an incredible talent who was done completely wrong by scandal but handled it with more grace than i would have- you’ve remained strong thru it all and i always related to you because i’m the baby of my family too
Wow!!! There is much energy through this entire video. The amount of effort that went into this is amazing. I love that Janet paid respects to some of the greatest entertainers in history and Victoria brought me here by doing the same for Janet wow!!! Truly a beautiful circle of life 😌
I get the chills every time I watch this video…the beat, the lyrics & the dances are insane….& might I add that the iconic cameos are mind blowing 🙏🏾❤️🗣️🔥🎙️🙌🏾
Man it would take me forever to make a 90's music playlist. There were so many great artist (Including Janet Jackson) . I really don't know where to start.
She did a wonderful job representing Cab Calloway’s time and mixing it with her modern twist. The old gangster flick and music from that era, she got it!
This is one of my favorite 90's song :) And guys, guess what. Today is not only May 16, but today is also Janet Jackson's 48th Birthday :) Happy Birthday Janet
This was a time when videos came out as Premieres on tv. The world waited for their release. Michael and Janet were the King and Queen of premiering videos. Who remembers "Remember the Time" or "Rhythm Nation" premiering on the world stage. Music really wont ever be the same as it once was but thats lifes progressions
