"Rhythm Nation" is a song by American singer Janet Jackson, released as the second single from her fourth studio album, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989). It was written and produced by Jackson, in collaboration with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Jackson developed the song's concept in response to various tragedies in the media, deciding to pursue a socially conscious theme by using a political standpoint within upbeat dance music. In the United States, it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Dance Club Songs charts. It also peaked within the top 40 of several singles charts worldwide. "Rhythm Nation" received several accolades, including BMI Pop Awards for "Most Played Song", the Billboard Award for "Top Dance/Club Play Single" and a Grammy nomination for Jackson as "Producer of the Year". It has been included in two of Jackson's greatest hits collections, Design of a Decade: 1986-1996 (1995) and Number Ones (2009).
The accompanying music video for "Rhythm Nation" was directed by Dominic Sena and choreographed by Jackson and a then-unknown Anthony Thomas. It served as the final segment in Jackson's long-form Rhythm Nation 1814 film. It portrays rapid choreography within a "post-apocalyptic" warehouse setting, with Jackson and her dancers adorned in unisex military attire. It was filmed in black-and-white to portray the song's theme of racial harmony. Jackson's record label attempted to persuade her against filming the video, but upon her insistence it became "the most far-reaching single project the company has ever attempted." The video received two MTV Video Music Awards for "Best Choreography" and "Best Dance Video." Jackson also won the Billboard Award for "Best Female Video Artist" in addition to the "Director's Award" and "Music Video Award for Artistic Achievement." The Rhythm Nation 1814 film won the Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video. The video's outfit was inducted into the National Museum of Women in the Arts and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, where its hand-written lyrics are also used in the museum's class on female songwriters.
Artists such as Sleigh Bells, Jamie Lidell, and Kylie Minogue have cited the song as an influence, while artists including Lady Gaga, Peter Andre, OK Go, Mickey Avalon, Usher, Keri Hilson, and Britney Spears have referenced its music video. Beyoncé, Cheryl Cole, Rihanna and Ciara have also paid homage to its outfit and choreography within live performances. It has inspired the careers of choreographers such as Darrin Henson and Travis Payne. Actors including Kate Hudson, Michael K. Williams, and Elizabeth Mathis have studied its music video, with its choreography also used in the film Tron: Legacy. It has been covered by Pink, Crystal Kay, and Girls' Generation and has also been performed on Glee, The X Factor USA, and Britain's Got Talent.

Now you see why Janet is the serious contender that she is. The blacklist after the Superbowl incident has resulted in a generation of young people who don't know that she is right up there with Michael, Madonna, George, Mariah, Celine, and Whitney. She's one of the big ones. The competition among female pop stars was unbelievable in the late 80's and 90's.

FINALLY someone requested this song! I'm sorry, but the numerous Janet Jackson ballads that people have been requesting are kind of by-the-numbers and simply do not compare to this masterpiece. All of her best songs were the ones where she wanted to make a point -- and this one is on another level. The video is also iconic. The visuals & music speak for themselves.

Janet rocks it hard and that choreography has some sharp edges! Great song. Great video. When this played a friend and I used to jump out of our chairs and do really bad, not-even-in-sync, imitations of the first 7 or 8 moves post-countdown. I'm so glad that younger people are appreciating Janet again (that 2004 Super Bowl performance basically ruined her), because she's so damn talented. This album was just insane. As someone else said, it came out the same year as Like A Prayer (LAP in March, Rhythm Nation in the fall), but Janet broke a huge barrier with her 7 singles released: MJ with Thriller: 7 Top 10 singles, 5 of them are Top 5. Insane record breaking, 1982-1984. (Side note - Madonna True Blue, 5 Top 5 singles and then Janet Control 5 Top 5 singles both in 1986-1987) Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation between 1989 and 1991 had SEVEN TOP 5 singles. I was reading an article about this recently and how nobody talks about it, and even though Thriller sold way more (of course), she bested a Thriller feat, in that she got to the Top 5 SEVEN times with her singles. This album was something special.

If I can recall correctly, the first time I heard this song was when the video or the short-film debuted on MTV. This was the second single/video from the album. Janet had been out of the public eye for a couple years and she very quietly dropped this project. This era cemented Janet as a powerhouse. She did that. Folks been doing their damnedest to erase her achievements and downplay her impact. But SHE DID THAT.

Janet Jackson had to push harder and play funkier and grittier to escape from the shadow of her brother and defy expectations arising from her all around cuteness. The dance choreography in the video was top notch for the times, but the uniforms remind me of some of the crew Public Enemy brought on stage during its shows back then. PS. The melody reminds me in parts of Parliament "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)".

This was the second single of the album of the same name. This song sampled the Sly and Stone family song ''Thank You'' for the guitar riff. Jimmy Jam heard the Sly and Stone family song when he was in restaurant and adding the sample when he return in studio with Lewis and Janet. He think it's fit with the groove who Janet and the duet Jam and Lewis already write in studio before to adding in the groove. This song was very ahead of his time and for me, it's definates the sound of 90's music in RnB and hip-hop depist it's was recording in 1988-1989 and it's came out in single at the end of 1989. The whole album was have a very aggressive sound in general in the album and she talk about social issues with few songs at the end of the album talk about romance. Also, the title track was the opening of the album. The three first tracks of the albums (Rhythm Nation, State of the World, The Knowledge) was hugely politicals and talk about all socials issues of the world. Janet easy also the spoken words songs (Before Madonna), with the song ''The Knowledge'' and the most urban song of the album. The song was very successful. This song never reaching n.1 in US, blocked by ''Another Day in Paradise'' by Phil Collins who this last dominated the charts while ''Rhythm Nation reaching his highest position in US (n.2). And the video ws influencals and many easy the choregraphy and the look of Janet and his dancers in this video. i heard few videos last years with the same look and dances moves to this video in few shows in TV. It's crazy how the song and the video was very influencals and a life changing, after she released the first single of the album ''Miss You Much'', because for the first single she wanted to slowing transition the public for the new era (because ''Miss You Much'' remains at her song ''Nasty'' because of his sound unlike the title track of the album). Easy to trying to listen the album version. Unlike the video version (more short to the radio version), the album version have a total running time to 5 and half minutes.

This and "The Pleasure Principle" are easily my favorite videos by her. But this cut is far better than PP. This can conceivably be considered her greatest song. The sample is, of course, from Sly and The Family Stone's "I Want To Thank You (For Lettin' Me Be Myself)", which is a phrase that Sly would say after every performance, though more often substituting "us" and "ourselves" for "me" and "myself".

No offense to anyone, but I wish people would let Janet stand on her own merits without a mention of Michael every time her music is heard or her videos watched.. 1) 10 #1 Singles 2) 7 #1 Albums 3) 24 Top 5 singles 4) 5 Top 10 singles from "Control," 7 Top 10 singles from "Rhythm Nation 1814," and 6 Top 10 singles from "Control" 5) Iconic videos like "Rhythm Nation," "That's The Way Love Goes," "Alright," "The Pleasure Principle," "When I Think Of You," "Got 'Til Its Gone," "Together Again" and "I Get Lonely" 6) Stellar, award-winning tours 7) Numerous awards including 5 Grammys and 8 Guinness World Records 8) Not to mention TV and film... Most of this was before she was black-balled, when Grammys meant more and every song on a CD wasn't released as a promotional single... My apologies for the rant.

I remember i was 20 or 21 year old dude in 1990, living in Germany, my pal liked the song, I copied the whole Album on tape for him - but I did not like it! Now certainly I do, I think this music was kind of ahead of its time back then, I remember how sad I was on New Years Eve in 1989, kissing the wonderful 80ies goodbye, I just still had to adopt to 90ies back then!

I’m having a hard time excepting this one. You love her brother. You’ve said it many times, you LOVE MJ. Referred to as the "Queen of R&B" by the media, Janet has sold more than 160 million records worldwide. Her accomplishments among artists of any gender but specifically among female artists have put her in a category with Babs, Madonna, Rihanna and the like …but you haven’t heard the lead track off of her most iconic album? You know, it’s OK to do “review” videos and share with us your thoughts and experiences about artists you’ve loved, who we all treasure Or maybe you’re sharing an artist with us for the first time. I’d be here for it.
