I can imagine Janis rocking herself in a rocking chair as an old woman sipping Southern Comfort as she tells her stories and cackles at her own jokes. How wonderful that would have been.
imagine one less heroin addict...youre right as long as they entertain the masses...LET EM KILL THEMSELVES....right? pathetic how self centered people are
Sitting here in Port Arthur, TX, where I was born and raised, like Janis. I am so thankful for modern technology that allows me the opportunity to see her perform again. God was showing off when he created Janis. RIP, hometown girl.
Absolutely amazing how she could just walk on stage and TURN IT ON like that.. She is not even warmed up, and the Soul just comes right through.. And its all SO Genuine and Real. There will never be another one like her..
I remember watching this when it originally aired. Had my feather boa in my hair and my hairbrush microphone in hand as my 10 year-old self tried to emulate the great JJ. I will forever be grateful to my sis who, being 7 years older, is responsible for me knowing and appreciating the music of her teen years...and what great music it was.
la-la land calling la-verne...they're low on crazy and need some of yours stat! you are a real treat....who screwed you up so badly? do you binge eat psychotic episodes from rabid rats?? you should really look for help from the county or state facilities...@Laverne Johnson
Strange...nothing at all against the lady God bless her but I don't hear any of that. Always sounded to me as though a microphone had been placed very close to a needle playing something by a `proper` singer.....that then amplified to sound like JJ.
@@gillsimo5610 bom dia ! toda familia amigas e amigos grato , em ler minha poesia meu livro arte e poesia em breve na editora autografia.com.br/publique.
In spite of all her emotional baggage, Janis Joplin was an awesome blues singer, and easy to love. I grew up in this era, listening to her, Hendrix, Doors, Cream, and so many more great bands at that time. Janis remains ever a tragic figure. I don't think she ever realized that many of her fans really loved her, cared about her, and still weep when we reflect on her all too early passing.
I would say BECAUSE of her emotional baggage Janis was an awesome blues singer. You have to suffer if you want to sing the blues and she had a tough life.
There are some people who have to be taught to develop their talent, and some people who are just born with a hell of a lot of raw unschooled talent. Janis was one of the latter.
She appeared at the Mississippi river festival a d her opening act was Paul Butterfield My car couldn't make the trip, so I begged a buddy to go or at least let me borrow his car..he said no to both. Still pissed at him 48 years later
I saw Janis in Concert in Jan. '70 and was at work when it was announced she had died. I had been a fan since 1968 and was just devastated when her death was announced. It's still wonderful, but a little sad, to she her video's from so many years back. She was one hell of a woman and performer , there will never be another Janis Joplin!
Can never understand why some people diss the shit out of people on RU-vid, You watch people on RU-vid coz you "like" them, right? ( Maybe I'm missing something here?) Lol
She didn’t actually sing. She screamed and yelled. That’s why I consider Bobby McGee her finest work. You can actually hear her pull off musical notes in that song and it was very good. She had a nice voice….if only she would have calmed down with the screaming so we could hear that lovely voice.
Love how she interacts with her band mates! It wasn't just about her and she wanted everyone watching to know it.....She shared the spotlight with everyone!
The so-called great young female singers of today can only wish they had the raw emotion and amazing voice that Janis possessed and shared with all of us.
if any one's ugly, it's got to be you. who died and left you supreme judge? last i heard the role was taken...you out to a halfway house now? they def. need one for bitter jealous and judgeMENTAL perfect people, like you@Laverne Johnson
Make up artist today could make Janice look as good as any of the singers that sing today however they could not make the singers of today sing as well as Janice ever.
Why is there so much about her looks? I was a 15 yr old teen girl who loved janis and copied the way she dressed. I dont remember anyone back then talking about her looks. Jeezus we are so shallow today
She was the entire package. Phenomenal voice, stage presence and a genuineness that made her so easy to love. I can watch her live performances over and over and still come away with goosebumps. I can't think of another performer black, white or otherwise with such raw energy. Just amazing.
I dont think janis was ugly she was a beautiful person with an amaing voice and down to earth it is just sad she got into drugs even this day 40 some years later people are still diein of drugs Rip sweet janis you were and are beautiful to soo many others 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Craig Negrey Her about how many of the rock stars have had addictions to drugs? Because most of them have to have something to keep their body going to keep them that wired
Damn who didnt love you as a kid? Lots of pent up anger over someone who never did anything to hurt or offend you and in no way could ever effect your life.
i bet you drown kittens n pull the wings off butterflys for entertainment...or are you psychotically jealous? either or, you need help. you don't like her? then go away, far-far fast-fast. really, you need professional help.@Laverne Johnson
naw actually she as drinking during the day before the afternoon filming of the show and was kind of coming down during the show. ( read the real books and learn) So.. she was buzzing on alcohol and feelin' alreet. Yea. She had been off heroin for a while prior to this. Get your facts straight. JANIS IS GOLD♥ Dear girl. xxoo
She was Incredible! What a Powerful Performer! Thank God this show was recorded so everyone can see and hear how great she was live! It’s all we have left now! And thanks to RU-vid for showing it! RIP Janis You were one of a kind and now passed into Legend!
When talking about women singers there is Janis Joplin, and there is everybody else. I often wonder what would've happened if she wasn't living fame during those wild times. I hope the young generations that come listen to her music beyond the surface of simple notes, and hear the only raw, soul-shredding voice that music have ever had.
musiclover6133 yes, you are the only one. She didn't have to be on his show. He was playing up the contrast between the two of them, she totally got it, and the audience got it. Now that you know that, watch them again, and see if you don't agree.
musiclover6133 i think they really liked and enjoyed each other. she appeared on his show many times... that's just his normal voice.. not a sign of condescending..
+musiclover6133 I'd say not the only one but as wrong as the other to think so IMO having just watched 2 visits. He's reaching for what to talk about. It's what he did on most of his interviewers I've seen. It tasted to me like he clearly loves her music, spirit, presence; and feels the awkwardness of his limitations to reach inside and pull something out that others haven't ... the pt of his show at that time, when nobody dug into reality in talkshow interviews -- which were generally more like extended advertisements bathed in vanilla redundancy. a lot of subsequent interviewers got to be more interesting in later interviews becuz Cavett's show was so popular mid70s for breaking out of standard topic ruts. But that didn't make it easy to get an artist who communicated the ways Janis's work did to deliver the same level of communication in a Q&A format, that wasn't what she was about. Cavett's way, unless circumstance predefined the subject for that particular guest, was to poke around randomly until something sparked the guest to run with the conversation. I think what tastes like condescension to some here is just Cavett feeling awkward abt not having found that trigger to set her off talking.
Dick Cavett has become my favourite talk show host. His interviews felt natural and Janis clearly didn't think he was being condescending or anything like that. In fact, I've heard some people say he had a thing for her. I think that's probably closer to the mark in explaining his manner in his interviews of her.
Pure , Raw, natural talent . One of a kind . I always thought she was cute and really down to earth , even though she had more talent than most people could ever dream of. Janis , you'd be happy to know we are still loving you and your music here in 2020 .
Dick sure liked and appreciated Janis alot, and what a hoot it was, when they got together. Janis was a GREAT PERSON!!! AND AWESOME SINGER ENTERTAINER R.I.P..
This here is a godess. Has been and always will be. She's probably got a great band up there in the stars and grooving like she likes to. RIP sweetheart
@Laverne Johnson You'll get to meet her then...NOT 😂 'Cos Janis is up there in Heaven making sweet music like the beautiful soul that she was...too sensitive for this Earth and the dark souls that inhabit it. You, on the other hand, have a very special place reserved for you...and it ain't with Janis. I pity you...must be some bad shit going on in your life. Now get off those drugs and booze and perhaps we can talk again...until then, I hope you find some peace and restoration, without making a complete fool of yourself all over YT...you take care Laverne.
@Laverne Johnson If only we were all as perfect as you, Laverne. Heaven is going to be a terribly lonely place with just yourself & Westboro Baptist there! X
"Laverne" left her disgusting remarks all over the place insulting Janice. Some people are so disappointed in life that the only way they can feel better about it for awhile is to wallow in hate and bitterness. It's a sad and pathetic display by a bitter loser.
@Laverne Johnson i wonder what it was that made you so sad .. Bitter and twisted. Commenting again and again... she must have beat you at something and left you in the dust and your still sulking 😂😂
Janis died when I was 11 and I really started listening to her music in the mid 70's when I was 15 or 16. Back then she looked to me so much older than the other rock musicians that I was into. Now I look at her and she looks like a child that someone should have protected from what was about to happen. What an absolute serious talent that drugs robbed all of us from seeing fulfilled. This era of music was original and it was fantastic. I truly feel sorry for younger people that don't know what it is like to be in high school and have a band like Zeppelin or Pink Floyd or Bad Company come out with a new album.
No singer in Rock and Roll of that era - male or female - could get under a song like her and keep it flying high. Without her these songs would fall and die. It's astounding still. I love her love for this music. I wish she would have saved some more love for herself.
well...why don't you go to hell and send her back!! i am sure that'd make a LOT of people happy!! i know i'd be one! someone must have really taken a giant shit on you somewhere down the line to warp you so badly.@Laverne Johnson
yes Jesusukset dont like fun, they like theyt everyone have be on sadnes, it's pity. In finland where Christianity is new religion compared to original science what has been ´folk cultural heritage, they had overtaken finland their totalitarian control after WW2, in finland is saying: pidetään ikävää. In finland we are honest and it is PERKELE what is main god who we ask help who we call, in problematic situations, who is powerful in earth not in heaven, as counter saying to Help me god, get more power when you speak against God, you get much more out of it. Pidetään ikävää! It is concentration of ideology of Christianity, emotion what controls their teachings, everything is about death, sorrow, hate, war, sickness, "helping poor" when it opposite keeping up poverty to have these negative emotions, rationalism what is developed from bible. Do I have to list all?
@ORORO i know exactly what you mean, you can see it the way he talks to her. He was really smitten with her... and i think he probably regrets never ever telling her that, probably being professional. in 2 months i'm gonna be 1 year older than Janis. Makes me sad outliving the 27 club :'(,
i often wonder about the music she could have put out if she hadnt passed away. every time i hear her sing it brings me back to a milder, gentler time. a place in my life i wish i had back but know it wont happen. we lost soo many very talented people during that time in our history...such a shame. love ya janis n miss your songs
Yes it's possible he had a crush on Janis but what a Beauty in every way ... R.I.P n the outcasts u went to H.S. with were All just Jealous of a Beautiful Person who made something of Herself .F_ _ _ K 'em ALL !! Jealous , Jealous, Jealous !!!!"
She died the year prior to my birth, but I truly love her music. The 1st time I played while I sang along,It was Bobby McGee,To this day,its still my favorite music to play and when composing my own ,Its blues I write.Everytime I see her,or hear her,im still moved and im Almost 47
Wow....dedicate this performance to my son Ryan who died the same way last year. Perhaps he and Janis are smiling down on us now....if you know someone using...help them stop! Ryan P Frye@virtual memorials
I am so sorry for your terrible loss. I don't think you ever get over the loss of your child. My little brother went the same way. You can't help someone until they're ready to help themselves. How many times I tried!
I have became a major fan of this incredibly awesome, badass female warrior while growing up in the 80s. She had one of the most powerful, beautiful voices of her generation. I wonder what if she was still alive today to give this generation some profound insight about the music industry. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
It takes a worried person to sing a worried song. Janis lived the blues. That's why she could sing them out. Hope your singing happier songs these days ..
Good lord, where does the time go? She was beautiful in every sense of the word. I'm floored that she could, in a matter of a few seconds, go from interview back into song and just knock it dead. I slip into periods where I almost forget Janis was here, but thankfully I always come rambling back to her music. Life is like that....
Laverne Johnson you have major issues. Trolling all over Janis vids is just stupid. Is being a hate filled little troll really the best use of your time? Seriously, is this all you have to do with your life? I pity you.
Just one more thing, when Janis died, the world lost an awesome, beautiful, crazy talented singer....I lost my best friend AND babysitter. She took care of me from 67 to 69. I was very young yes, but remember every little thing we did when she took care of me. Couldn't understand at the time, why this lady would scream thru this microphone at me! I thot, omg she really thinks she can sing!! lol. funny, lil kids...aren't they? We would make ice cream sometimes...like lavender ice cream, rum icecream, gosh it was good! I'd always make her those spin art pictures, member those? U put like a card board piece of paper on this little machine & it'd spin as fast as u wanted & u had like lil squeeze bottles of colored paints & no matter what, the art work would turn out awesome! She'd hang them in her bedroom, over her bed. My brothers used to help her bring groceries in...from her psychodellic convertible Porsche, she'd toss them a couple quarters & they'd be so FN happy! She always had so many people at her house, they all loved me, I was about 4-5 yrs old...I can't completely remember, but I will just let it rest as this.....Jim Morrison was there alot, I know it was him that used to bounce me on his knee, I know it! Anyway, great times, probably the best I'll ever have, times were so much better then, so much. I love u Yanny (that's what I called her). miss u bad!
Phaedra D. We have lost good talented singers. To drugs and the music business cares more about the equity of the money they're making off them! They business rarely makes a hard effort. To get them to stop! If you doubt me! Elvis manager Tom Colonel Parker. When on the road with Elvis on the last tour they did in 77 before he died! And his hairdresser Larry said. It look like Elvis didn't OD but it had too many pills! Larry said that they had a bowl and ice water sticking Elvis face in it. To get Elvis revived. And Larry said all the sudden he heard a big knock on the door! And he's like who would be up here Knocking. That's pretty unusual this time of day and it would be hard for them to get past security. Larry said he went to the door and it was Elvis's manager Tom Colonel Parker. And he said we're is Elvis? Larry said he in the bed. We think he's took too many pills. Larry said Tom Colonel Parker went in there for about an hour! Then he walked out and said... Larry said he was thinking that Tom Colonel Parker was going to say something like when this tour is over Elvis needs to go to a program for help! But he said the only thing that matters. And I mean that the only thing that matters that this man is on stage performing tonight! Tom love the percentage of the equity he made from Elvis. But he didn't love Elvis or he would have got him help!
Laverne Johnson Why do you hate this woman soo much ? What did she do to you ? You certainly are not perfect by any means. For you to wish her to rot in hell is horrible. What makes YOU better than her ? You didn't know her personally. You are a sinner in need of saving like all of us.
Sad that someone shares a memory, and instead of just reading it and moving on, you decided to leave a vile comment. Interesting how you spew such vitriol, yet just happen to be watching this clip, and reading the comments...
Jeff C ??????? I don't see why you consider my comment vile. I was just curious about the circumstances of how Janis came to be her babysitter. I certainly didn't mean to offend anyone or Janis's memory.
Well I’ll trade all my tomorrow’s for one single yesterday! I love this time of my life, the late sixties and early seventies were the best! I love and admire Janis to this day! She was a big part of my life back then! Was completely heartbroken when I heard she died! You were lookin’ for that home and I hope you found it! RIP beautiful, soulful Janis! 💔🌹💔🌹💔
Thank you RU-vid for reminding us what real music sounds and feels like! No one sounds like Janis Joplin. She was unique. And an inspiration to singers everywhere.
partially right there I think...how about soul singer....and how about blues singer......sad we'll never be graced with such a true original talent as Janis again....
Dick Cavett, to this day, is one of my favorite interviewers of all time. He was a square next to Janis but she liked him. She was a self-described “beatnik” next to him but he liked her. I miss them. I loved them both.
Wow she's way before my time but her voice is amazing I was born 1991 myself but I have to say today's music is shit its nothink like the 60s 70s 80s or 90s no more she has a very cute smile to janis joplin Rip ❤️🌺she has a lovely relaxing voice to
Loved her work to bits. She got me through a lot of lonely nights back then. Now too. But she looks 40 not 27.drugs troubled her soul, &robbed us of her spirit. Vale Janis Joplin
I would listen to her albums over and over. One of the first woman rockers to influence my life. Dad would go out on the road to do business, right away- my brother and I would have lots of friends over to parrrrty! We would all dance to 70s rock, drink beer and smoke weed.... till it eventually got ugly due to my brother hitting heroin. Regardless, still the very best of rock singers amongst them was, of course- Janis. I loved how she could give a shit what you or anyone else thought of her and how she was sooo in her element with a microphone. I still remember every single line of most all of her songs. The day she died I remember being genuinely bummed for about 3 days. I was only 12 years old. She'll forever rock my soul!
yeah i know. it WAS amazing back then, but you can absorb the spirit of it and bring new energy into the world based on that spirit of the 60's that you absorb.
Your name Phaedra? Hello!!! Janis babysat me from the time I was 2 to 5, older I get, the more such years and memories come, weird....But just thot I'd say Hi to another Phaedra, don't see us around that much! Good days!
I’ve always felt like even though he was short-haired and socially acceptable, he yet was able to see her as a real person. I agree-he liked and respected her, and the feeling was mutual.
Phaedra389:...I have read dozens of comments about Janis . *My only question is this, "Is it possible that Janis was 'touched' by a 'family member',or 'friend of the family',perhaps when she was very young?")!(
So good to watch this... don't know what I was up to at that time, for sure Janis dominated that genre🌹 RIP ❤️ Wild Child comes to mind, she was way to good... Thank heaven for these clips! No one quite likeHer, then, certainly Not Today!! Thanks for sharing🌸
Such a soulful and talented woman! I just love her music. On a side note, I've seen pics of my grandmother in the 70s and I swear her and Janis could definitely be sisters! They look so much alike omg
This beautiful soul was on the main circuit for just three years....but a lifetime of music was the gift she gave to all of us!!! ❤🔥🔥🔥❤. RIP Janis! 🙏😇😢
I am 68 years old and grew up in So CA. When we would have love-ins at Griffith Park sometimes Janis Joplin would come and sing for free, as well as Jefferson Airplane (later Jefferson Starship), and lots of other bands every weekend. When Janis was there she put on a great show, loving us, and we passed around the weed, there were no bad diseases yet, like HIV/aids. Most people in that era didn't know that heroin is a strong opioid and too much can cause respiratory failure just like fentanyl, which is what happened to Janis. We never heard the word opioid or what they can do causing you to stop breathing. If you love Janis check out Courtney Hadwin, bringing rock and soul back to a new generation and putting real musicians back to work again instead of using computer generated sound that put musicians out of work. What goes around comes around and maybe every 50 years a true talent shines their light on us. Courtney will be at the 50th anniversary of Woodstock this coming August, the youngest person invited to perform at the Woodstock reunion and for good reason.
Oh, and Janis was and still is my favorite all time female singers! She had a style that nobody, and I do nobody, has ever been able to successfully copy! She was so unique and awesome!
I grew up idolizing Janis!! It's funny to look back now and realize how young she was!! She was a 10 years older than me...in this interview she was so sweet and naive. RIP Janis!!
