The Tortured Life of Janis Joplin

Long before the phenomenon that was Amy Winehouse, whose mesmerizing voice captivated millions, there was Janis Joplin, to whom Winehouse was often compared. While Joplin only released three albums during her lifetime (and a few posthumously) and only one Top 40 hit, she still became one of the biggest American music stars of the 1960s, and her music continues to influence musicians today.

Gingerella Cookie I agree with you. Im not sure if you read my comment correctly. I never placed importance or value on good looks, and I never stated that a persons worth is tied to them. I was talking about how we feel and what we believe about ourselves can greatly impact are behavior and actions. She was in show business and even back then a lot of credence and attention was given to appearance and superficial beauty. no doubt that played a roll in how concerned she was with her appearance. Also not everyone is emotionally strong grounded, able to brush off mean spirited mocking and shaming as easily as you apparently can. So please read the comment carefully before insinuating Im a empty and Vapid type with no care for what really matters on the inside. Your moral lesson is noted, but not needed.
@gingerellacookie5641

I certainly didn't mean to insinuate that just that I learned how little looks matter in the end. I used to think that was all that mattered or the ticket to happiness boy was I mistaken.

She was so beautiful. My mother was in love with her and her music. When she finally got her own place in her late 40s after growing up in a very stressful house with 4 siblings and a shi##y father then a nasty marriage to my father while raising 3 kids, she would blast Janis Joplin’s greatest hits in the mornings. Smoke a joint, clean and sing at the top of her lungs. I remember feeling so proud and happy for her. It was my first time seeing my mother feeling so free. She passed away 4 yrs. I can’t listen to Janis without thinking about my mother and wanting to cry. Hope they enjoyed a joint together.

I bet they didn't. Life isn't all about becoming rich and famous. We just know a very little about Joplin. They would've had a better idea of who she was as a person. Probably a lot of them went on to decent lives, and just saw her being a whore, doing drugs, drinking, and eventually losing her life due to her stupid behaviour. They're probably even still alive today, with big healthy families.

I remember years ago watching a film clip of when Janis returned to Port Arthur for her high school reunion. She was all feather boas, bracelets and bravado, pure Janis, until something, a deeply personal question about her past, from a reporter maybe, cut her deeply, and then the smile and confidence disappeared, replaced by a look of hurt and anguish, she began to stutter ,withdraw and the media sensing blood were all over her with more questions. It makes me recall something Jesus Christ once observed in the book of Matthew, that a prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and in his own household. Ironically, the city limit signs now read that Port Arthur is THE BIRTH PLACE OF JANIS JOPLIN.

I remember in high school I saw one of her interviews on Dick Cavett and she brought up that her high school reunion was coming up soon and she said something to the effect of "they laughed me outta the school, they laughed me outta the town, they laughed me outta the state. So now I'm gonna go home" and it always stuck with me. Something about the way she seemed so proud of herself but in a humble way was rather charming. Edit: I wasn't all the way through the video when I commented this, I had a good chuckle when they mentioned the same quote in the video!

I am of above average intelligence- nowhere in sniffing distance to a genius, but I am always eager to learn about new things. @@JennaLeigh This phenomenon (bullying) is not uniquely American. It is a scourge in Australia. I wonder if you've heard of Dolly Everett, the daughter of a Northern Territory farmer, a sweet-looking girl who at some stage was selected to be the face of the Akubra brand. The girl was bullied so badly and relentlessly, she committed suicide two years ago at the age of 14. The staff at the school she attended chose not to react. Quite typical for Australia. I worked with a girl who wanted to become a baker. She was badly bullied in her first year of apprenticeship and decided to exit the industry, My observation is that this sort of behaviour develops and is encouraged for some weird reason in countries with the culture and economic system is of "dog eats dog" mentality. People feel threatened so they fight for survival, best done by taking down anyone who might be in competition: ho is brighter, achieves more, or are more ambitious, in a good sense, by setting high standards for themselves. Out of English speaking countries, only New Zealand is different. Europeans, on the other hand, tend to cooperate, work together and together look after the good of their country. When I was at school (in Europe) even the slightest sign of bullying was nipped in the bud by anyone who spotted it" the fellow students, teachers,. anyone who saw it. Any form of bullying is socially unacceptable.

@@danutahanyga4834 wow. No, I most certainly was not aware, and I apologize for my ignorance. I think I've just become jaded by the utter brokenness of every American system to the point that several other countries seem like a step up. My heart breaks for the child who felt there was no way out at 14. 14!! Emotions run so high at those formative years, It crushes me to even think of the pain she was in....and her school did NOTHING? i see where you called that a typical Australian response. By that, do you mean that they practice the British act of "stiff upper lip", don't show emotion? Or is it perhaps something darker you see? And for the sweet person who wanted to be a baker....seeing someone's dreams get crushed is agonizing. I'm a makeup artist and have had numerous apprentices and assistants over the years. Some were amazing and have long surpassed me. I am immeasurably proud of them. There were some who just weren't cut out for it....and for them, i worked to guide them into what they were best at. One young lady just wasn't great with people. She has Asperger's and it made for some uncomfortable interactions with clients. However, when she made face charts (literally just where you sketch out potential looks/products used) she was an absolute rock star. Soooo, i introduced her to a friend of mine who does special fx work. Now she works in a studio, sketching out and creating masks and effects....and she is unreal good at it. She made me some zombie skin and wounds for a photo shoot I was working on, all on 2 days notice....and she killed it. I got emotional seeing her in her workshop, working, totally in her element. And she was so proud to show me what she had made for me. I'm in tears thinking about it. You make a fantastic point with capitalist/"dog eat dog" societies and how that conditions behavior. Too often, what happens is precisely as you said- the most ambitious, the most talented, the most promising get bullied and beaten down by insecure, less talented, or even just lazier colleagues. I don't know the solution to this, sadly. Sorry for the novel- your comment was incredibly thought provoking!

@@JennaLeigh Well done! Humanity needs more people like you. The owner of the Beauty and Deportment school where I used to work introduced extracurricular subjects of Fantasy Make up competition and Nail Art competition just to give girls who weren't academically gifted, a chance to shine. As for Dolly, you can look up the story on Wikipedia. It's there. She is gone so doesn't suffer anymore. I just feel for her parents who have to live with the pain of losing their child to suicide and they couldn't protect her. Australians are remarkably envious/emulous people. If one is good at something or even has an ambition to be good at something, others will bully this person no end. And they are pretty horrid too. I was left speechless after an American visitor commented to me that Australian kids are evil. Before that, for some reason, I thought American kids behaved worse. Then again I met an American family who came to Australia with the father who had a work contract in Melbourne. They only stayed 3 months. The father decided he didn't want his children to go to school here. This surprised me too. But there you are. Sorry to take so long to reply.

In another world or another lifetime had we met we would have shared a great friendship. I’m probably one of the last people to ever photograph the home where she grew up in Port Arthur, TX. A year later a hurricane came thru SE Texas and destroyed everything. It took a lot of searching for her house. I’d heard her brother was going to turn it into a memorial of sorts that people could go in and view. The only thing that was done was to put a very small plaque in the front yard that I had passed by it a dozen times before I finally had to stop and asked some people where the house was located. No one had heard of her until I said there should be a memorial sign in front of her house. One guy sent me down the road a few blocks and I finally found it. It was actually hidden by overgrown shrubbery. There was someone living in the house so I knocked on the door to get permission to walk around and take pictures. The lady that was there kept ignoring my knocks until she found out I wasn’t leaving. She granted me permission to photograph the front of the house only. I walked away with only a few pictures and the house is hard to see thru all the shrubbery. She can never be replaced. She was just one of those people that got the life sucked out of her. One of my favorite movies is "The Rose" I watched that movie when I was a child and fell in love with Janis Joplin. Boy that little lady had some powerful pipes. I'm glad I clicked on this bc I never knew about the Bessie Smith head stone (love it) #outstanding

I read to treat her severe acne, Janis got dermabrasion treatments when she was younger. Not the painless microdermabrasion we have today but the kind where the doctor literally “sands” your skin down. Sounds horrific

I adore both Bessie Smith and Janis Joplin. so when I read that she placed a headstone for Bessie, I was in complete awe of Janis’s good character and heart. What a selfless thing Janis did for a such a good woman, who too endured so much unnecessary pain in her life. I can definitely see why Janis felt so close to Bessie. Both were absolutely amazing and inspiring women ahead of their time. May they both Rest In Peace.

I think she was beautiful inside and outside. She was the greatest female singer ever. I miss her today more than 1970. Every time I watch her sing or listen to her sing, I get tears in my eyes and get very sad that she is gone because of the evil and meanness of people. If she was alive today, she would be 78 years old. She gave me a big hug at Woodstock and kissed me. I was 16 years old and I had a crush on her from that day on. I miss you Janis..I'll see you in Heaven.

I was attending the University of Texas in the early 1980's when the Daily Texan newspaper reprinted a story on Janis from 1962. My remembrance of the story was that it was a chance for Janis to answer her critics. The story expressed how "out there" Janis was, but that she was true to her values. Even in the 1980's it was only $4 a credit hour for classes, but belonging to a fraternity or sorority cost several hundred dollars per month. Guys in fraternities were viewed as wealthy, conservative and arrogant, and tended to look down on regular (non-Greek) students. They regaled themselves in a lot of that antebellum bullshit. I'm sure the hazing Janis took from frat boys was cruel and severe. "You know why we're stuck with the myth that only black people have soul? Because white people don't let themselves feel things." --Janis Joplin

Wow a man wouldn't have this much discussion about how he looks! Just how talented and cool he is! We still have a long way to go but Janice wouldn't have had that cruel and shallow comment today as women have more power and are seen for their abilities and talents more and let's not forget kindness too (which Janice had in spades as well as huge unique talent) see her beauty shining through those eyes and incredible powerful voice X she'll be cackling somewhere now and still singing the blues!xxxxx 🙏 bless ya Janice and thanku for your music that we are still lucky enough to hear now💚✨💚

I saw Janis in concert at "The Atlanta Pop Festival" in 1969. When she came on stage doing "Ball and Chain" it changed my life! Of course the four way hit of orange sunshine probably had a hand in it too. I've been told I even resemble her a little.

@ianmacfarlane1241

@@gman0047 Yes, couldn't agree more - not classically beautiful, but in no way ugly, (not that I'm particularly comfortable with the notion of anyone being described as physically ugly). The fraternity 'bros' who described her as such were certainly mean spirited and (internally) ugly themselves. Some people can brush off comments like that, but it can be deeply wounding for most. I'll often make self deprocating remarks about my looks, but the thought of a group of people voting me ugly en masse would be quite upsetting I imagine, never mind the fact that they voted her an ugly man. Shame on them.

Who where these guys? It was ut in 62 I'm sure they are still around. Would love to ask what they think of their behavior now. Maybe that's why Charlie gave them a Whitman Sampler in 66.

@@celladora31 A lot of them probably are still around - they'd be in their late 70s/early 80s. I'm guessing that it wouldn't be the worst thing that most if them have done, but I'd hope that as they look back on their lives they'll spend a moment thinking about how they'd feel if Janis had bey their daughter or granddaughter. Didn't immediately get the Charles Whitman reference as Whitman's Samplers aren't sold in the UK, but I got there in the end - naughty 😉.
