In this episode, MeatEater's Janis Putelis and Jason Phelps, owner and operator of Phelps Game Calls, continue hunting for Janis’s first archery bull elk in southeast Colorado. A change in altitude is all it takes to put them back in the action.
In this episode, MeatEater's Janis Putelis is joined by Jason Phelps, owner and operator of ‪@PhelpsGameCalls‬, for a September elk hunt on a friend's ranch in southeast Colorado. It might be a surprise to some that MeatEater's longtime producer and resident elk guide has never killed a bull with his bow, but after years handling clients and cameras, it's finally Jani's turn to cut his tag.

You and your family will be the first ones to depend on a hunter for your food. @@robbiehill433 unfortunately in this day and age you have to consider who's watching and the impression it gives. Whooping, hollering and laughing gives the impression of a lack of respect, even when that's not the case. That's just more fuel for anti hunters. That might not be a major problem for you guys in the USA yet, but here in the UK it certainly is. Our culture has shifted so far away from hunting, now the average person thinks you must be a psychopath if you like to hunt.

Congratulations Janis, I would have been very interested in seeing where the arrow actually hit, as I have never taken a frontal shot being uncomfortable doing it and passing on a ten point this past season because of it. Great work, love the new series.

Amazing, that's what it's all about coming full circle. After watching you guys for four years and practically getting me into hunting and bow hunting, it still never gets old watching you guy's hunt new game and have new experience's with new lessons learned, but also watching you sharing those experience's with friends and coming together for a great meal and reminiscing together of adventures past, as well as adventures to come.

I am always in shock and awe to see how these expert elk hunters can call in such a large, leery & magnificent creature, within a few yards so they might harvest it with a simple bow and arrow. And....despite clearly communicating that success is often just a roll of the dice, Janis and Jason make it all look so damn easy - from the perfect shot, to the butchering, to the preparation of a mouth-watering meal. Another fantastic video. Almost as good as being there...almost. You guys are an absolute treat to watch!

I'm not a professional elk hunter and have not been but a few times, but each time I've had elk on top of me is when they have been called in, with either a challenge bugle or a cow call. If you see elk before you call, then maybe you don't need to call, but if you hear them and can't see them then I think calling helps get them talking and moving.

I remember my job as an industrial meat cutter where we were expected to do 4 roasts like that a minute. Siver skin and tendon removed with minimal meat loss
