My nephew, who is in second grade, just did a project for the American Revolution. He dressed up as Thomas Paine and did a presentation. He's going to be learning about Shakespeare. I'm surprised, but so proud and excited.

He looked so cute in the video of his dress rehearsal my sister sent us. I like that his school is starting early on those subjects.

I think lots of us on booktube know what it’s like having bookish friends we’ve never met 😉 . Lenten Lands sounds heartbreaking but I’m glad it was also a rewarding reading experience Kate.

Re: the Puritans....i took an abbreviated church history class at my church taught by one of our associate pastors. The Puritans arose because they were against the Church of England and Catholic church. They felt they should be "purified" and wanted no state church. (Previous to this the Catholic church had issues with priests pocketing money without working and not living in their parish; lotsn of controlled income of the bishoprics and selling/auctioning them. ) Then after the English Reformation and some of the beliefs of the Church of England vs Catholic belief Puritanism began to rise. They wanted a more pure state church and no external authority over the congregation.... so then they began to flee to America to escape persecution... which is different than religious freedom which we hear about all the time. I'll see if i can find the book he used for reference

I cracked up when you said: "He chooses his second wife very poorly. An evil enchantress!" 😂 Love this! I definitely need to track down those Elizabeth Cadell books!

I adore Daughter of the Forest and The Two Princesses of Bamarre!!! And of course Little House in the Big Woods. I'm really looking forward to reading The King's General.

A lovely read if you would like more on the English Civil War is The Rider of the White Horse by Rosemary Sutcliff. It's a novel about Sir Thomas Fairfax, a Parliamentary General. Of course, any of Rosemary Sutcliff's books are great but this is my favourite.

I just filmed a video on rereading The Chronicles of Narnia! Such a joy to revisit! Don't feel too bad about reading it in publication order. I personally consider it better to read it that way. Just from the way the books are written, it is so clear The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe should be read first. Sometimes authors are wrong about their own books, I guess haha. 😆

I just started reading Gentle and Lowly. One chapter in, and I've highlighted basically everything. Great book.

I didn’t realize there was a book after 84 Charing Cross Road. Thank you, I have got to read that! Maybe that will give me what I had hoped for in CCR (partially). I just started reading Cadell and was wondering which to read next. Thanks! I loved Iris in Winter. Family Gathering was my other one and I enjoyed it as well.

What a great reading month! I’ve added a few to my TBR list. If your homeschool journey ever leads you to House of Humane Letters classes and you take Angelina’s How To Read Literature classes (I did it when my daughter did it in high school) you might have a change of heart about The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It’s part of that class, and when we read it I absolutely adored it!

At the end of the day even if a story is filled with meaningful symbolism and a beautiful message it's just not enough to make me love it if I don't also enjoy the layout of the story. Plot is very integral to whether or not I can love a book.

@@katehowereads So true! And of course, every book is not the same for every person. I just really loved getting into what he was doing with this book and why he structured it the way he did. So while I love the plot of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe much more, understanding why he did what he did in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader made me like it more than I ever would have on my own.

Every time you talk about Daughter of the Forest, I think, "I want to read that. " But I haven't yet. Is the Vicar of Bulstrode (?) a standalone.

I can't recommend Daughter of the Forest enough! There's just such a richness to the storytelling. The Vicar of Bullhampton is a standalone.

Juliet Marillier is an author I never knew about until last year when I read her Blackthorn and Grim trilogy. I absolutely love the trilogy (Grim is one of my favorite character of all time.) “Daughter of the Forest” is on my radar to read in the future. The Little House series I am currently reading. Currently reading “These Happy Years” in the series. So almost finished. I read the Chronicles of Narnia in the order C.S. Lewis wanted. And I actually enjoyed reading that way.

I have fond memories of reading the Duncton series as a late teen. Would be interested to see how they would hold up to a re-read 30 years later.
