I grew up listening to Barbra and watching her movies and you have definitely convinced me I want to listen to this! I love Funny Girl, Yentl, and The Way We Were. Thank you so much for sharing your detailed thoughts on this one, Kate. Very insightful!

I really enjoyed listening to this too. It led to me rewatching all my favorite Barbra movies too. For me that’s The Way We Were, The Mirror Has Two Faces, Yentl, On a Clear Day, and The Guilt Trip. I also watched What’s up Doc and Funny Girl. I put the audio on hold without looking into the book at all and almost returned it without listening when the hold came in and I realized the length! I thought what on earth can one person say about themselves for two days straight? 😂 But I pushed play, thinking I would give it an hour and then decide what to do. I was hooked. Completely hooked. I loved hearing her talk about her life, the value she places on creative expression, and how completely she embraces her uniqueness and that of others. She’s lovely. So much more lovely than I anticipated. Regarding Prince of Tides - I went with friends to the theatre to see it in my teens, having no idea what it was about. We were in it for the romance depicted in the tv ads. I have never quite gotten over the devestation this movie filled me with. For that I commend her work as a storyteller and director but I genuinely wish I’d never watched it. I really enjoyed your thoughts on Barbra. Thanks for sharing them.

Thank you for your enthusiasm about Barbra and her work. For some reason when thinking about The Way we Were I always remember her complaining about the weather in California and wishing it would rain! I love that. Such a great film.

Speaking of classical music, how are you doing on the journey through Clemency Burton-Hill's Year of Wonder? I got if for a friend after seeing it recommended by three different booktubers, then kept it for myself and got another for my friend. It's a discipline, but the month-by-month playlists set up by half a dozen youtubers help. I find it is a little fragmented, jumping from here to there and back again. The short daily anecdotes and bios are very interesting, and could be a doorway into deeper appreciation, given time. There are some great podcast interviews of the author, about her brain aneurysm following the publication of the book, and her weeks-long coma just as the pandemic began. The music has been an aide to her recovery, once the grief of losing her ability to play it had subsided a bit.

Love the scene in The Mirror Has Two Faces when Jeff Bridges sees her makeover for the first time! Great review!

Oh, my first thought was that it had to be Dickens. Hahahaha Artists can't turn off their creativity, so it makes sense that she would have ideas. The thing about that is that it's probably male actors and directors, etc. saying she's "difficult." A male actor (e.g. Dustin Hoffman) is praised for his high standards and dedication to the "craft." Great review, Kate! I can read so much faster than listening (even when I speed it up) but there are some books, especially autobiographies, where you want to hear their voice.

I love Barbra such a fantastic voice. I have to say I didn't enjoy 'The Way we Were' as a movie, I wonder what the novel's like, I might prefer that. That's quite a commitment, I think the longest audio book I've listened to was 'Middlemarch'

I like Barbra but hate her politics. I loved Yentel and Mirror has Two Faces. Nuts is one that will "get" you. Very serious. The songs from the films were more famous than the movies themselves.
