Japa! Nigeria Moves To Prevent Maltreated Nurses From Leaving Country 

As a Nigerian doctor, I stand 💯 with our nurses. This is unfair, wicked, and cruel. Haba!

How bloody wicked can a government be? It's obvious they don't want anyone's progress.

Hear me, if you are a Nigerian nurse and these rules hinder you from travelling, instead of sacrificing two to three years extra to any Nigerian employer, take whatever certification you have already, even if it is your GCE, go to your desired country, take up employment in any other healthcare role even if it is as a healthcare assistant or surgical sterile technician and register in nursing school in that country. In the next two - three years, you'll advance so much that you'll stick your tongue at those trying to enslave you in Nigeria. After all, some people never even went to nursing school in Nigeria and they are successful nurses in other countries earning well. Retrogressive conditions created by incompetent decision makers in Nigeria's leadership positions. Bunch of losers!

Did the Government pay the Nurses school fees or did they do practicing exams for the Nurses. Nigerian Nurses should take the Government to Court. If they need money,let them create a go fund me. People will support. This is very wrong, where is the right of the people? If government don't want nurses to leave then they should be paid fairly.

As a doctor I can tell you that all junior medical staffs are abused in this country, not by patients but by their seniors. I didn't train here so I was shocked to see all the abuse. If they really want the nurses to stay, they should treat them better. The senior doctors abuse the junior doctors and the senior nurses abuse the junior nurses. Am sure same happens in medical lab and other departments too. I hope we can organize and fight for ourselves.

OMG Adeola, you are dropping bombs here. Look I work in the UK as a Nurse and I have been in this profession for 32 years! To be frank nursing in the UK has its problems, however I can’t imagine any govt telling me that I need to wait for 6 months to get my pin number or license to practice! Nigeria na wah oh!

Here in UK where I live, Nurses and Doctors earn more than House of Common and House of Lords. But in Nigeria, Nurses and Doctors earn peanuts compared to Senators and Federal cum State House of Representatives. What a shame in Nigeria!!!

Thanks so much Adeola for helping to lend your voice. I have applied to Nursing Council in Nigeria for almost 2 years to verify my certificate to WES. Till now, it was not done. I left Nigeria 10 years ago. Despite i paid, no one is picking their phone numbers. I have missed 2 Admissions and lost job opportunities due to Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria negligence. It is very painful. Can you imagine this new law? We say no to it. I am happy God is using you to express our minds. I pray they will have ears that hear.

What has authenticating a certificate or a degree got to do with a character letter? Again, why the deliberate delay for six months? Simply put, make the environment conducive for the nurses and no one will try to japa. If £ becomes 1:1 with naira today, I will be one of the first set of Nigerians to japa back to Nigeria after 33 years in the UK. Please make life pleasurable a bit for our children. They face abuse of various grades at school, ranging from poor accommodation to lack of water and even delaying their progress at school! Haba! They faced numerous exams under difficult conditions including epileptic power supply, they are out again to face this kind of problem. I worked as a registered midwife in Nigeria before I left for the US over 11 years ago. Nigeria's health care system is bad, and that's why nurses are leaving. In addition, NMCN needs to be revamped. This guideline is the same as Universities saying their verification will take 6 months, and graduate must practice for 2 years before they are qualified to apply. Adeola, you've said it all......"Misplaced Priority Syndrome."

Adeola it’s even worse that diaspora nurses are also affected. Many nurses abroad are being prevented from furthering their education due to lack of verification.

Similar thing happening in Cameroon; teachers no longer allowed to leave the country unless it is holidays. Yet working conditions worsen by the day and price hikes in everything has no corresponding salary increase to even ease things up. Cameroon should take a cue from Ivory Coast with the same currency. SADDDDD!!!

Since the details of all Registered Nurses and Midwives in Nigeria are captured, I believe the verification process can be automated and made even easier and faster. Travelling abroad is an opportunity for Nigerian Nurses to play in the global space and it has a way of showcasing the wealth and brilliance of our Nation. All NMC and the government need to do is to improve the system and support Nurses to achieve their dreams. The ROI that comes back to Nigeria. Some Nurses have NGOs and businesses in Nigeria, some may even be able to provide scholarships to Nursing Students who are in Nigeria. The government needs to reverse it. It doesn't portray the Nation in good light.

Adeola you said exactly what needs to be done instead of the pro-max show of misplaced priority of the Nigerian Nursing council. This is 2024 and the school conditions has grown worse (despite paying huge amount as school fees) in one of the nursing colleges, it's so bad that I paid some part of the school fees in a personal account (which was just ridiculous and annoying because of the way the country is already). Finish school then the monster unemployment is staring you in the face, how then will they not move out of the country in their numbers?

Big Sister you have said it all,we have shortage of $ in the country and even for that reason we should encourage who ever is qualified to travel out,moreover they will equally be train with state of the art equipments in Europe & America.If they can not get justice they should seek redress in court. Let the nurses and midwives go on indefinite strike. The hospitals can’t work without them and they can’t fire all the nurses and midwives either. If anything, they don’t want them to go on strike because they’re already short staffed. Going to court is a waste of their time. They can never win the government in court here in Nigeria. Nurses are too calm in Nigeria, and they have leaders who don’t represent their interests that’s the reason why they keep getting abused and insulted.

This happened in Zimbabwe years back former minister of health then advocated for same even in other African countries we ( nurses ) when not allowed to go and work in other countries irregardless of your duration in services Blocked to work in other African countries fuelled nurses to look of ways to leave .Many of us we went overseas because of those who were in high authority then to increase our salaries and other benefits The country lost experienced staff
