People just won't believe how long you can walk in geta or zori. So here is the video to proof that even geta or zori are just regular shoes!I hope you also enjoy the wonderful town Arita in Saga Prefecture and its porcelain market.
Thank you so much for watching!!

The song became popular in Japan because of the Ghibli film “Whisper of the Heart.” The Olivia Newton-John cover was featured and was rewritten with original Japanese lyrics by the producer’s daughter and Hayao Miyazaki!

I was given an authentic kimono that's been passed down since my grandmother who got it from a Japanese pen pal. Your videos have been so helpful, but especially this one - I had no idea about tightening geta!

I just made myself some geta and learned some very important things. 1 size is everything. 2 weight is also everything. I couldn’t find any kiri thick enough so I used hinoki. Even that was too heavy.

I can't find kiri either. But I have found balsa and am thinking of using that instead for a pair of geta.

Looking forward to your video about retightening the hanao. My nimaihageta need it badly and I don't think there is a shop for it anywhere in Europe 🙈😂

I have a few pairs of zoris and nimaiha geta. I haven't fiddled with my zoris, mostly comfortable. But I had to loosen all my geta hanao as so tight I couldn't put them on. It took a bit of detective work with the knot under, but they seem to be all made on the same principle and once you find it, it's easy to change. Unroll, loosen and retighten. And walk for miles.

I wear zouri the traditional way where the length is a little shorter than my actual foot. It’s very comfortable!

@eggboy6926 11 месяцев назад
i saw an infographic somewhere about the "traditional" vs "comfortable" length, that people always think that geta where you can fit your whole foot length are more comfortable, but actually the weight distribution is better and more comfy the traditional way. do you have any wisdom about that?
@cap4life1
@cap4life1 11 месяцев назад
Not Billie but yes, the traditional way is better and helps balance your weight better especially if your foot is arched.

So much beautiful pottery! I would have a hard time making a choice. Thank you so much for addressing the geta and zori comfort and fit. The little pillows for your zori shape are so cute! That would be a fun little diy!

Great to see shots of the Arita market. I went there over Golden Week in 1991. A fantastic experience. I still have some of the pieces I bought 32 years ago.

Thankyou so much for this one! I was actually trimming a yarnbowl i threw earlier this week while I watched it. I'm a full time potter with a history in fibres and textiles, so I make tools for such artists. But i also love all ceramics. Also, you have me thinking of getting some of those shoes for in my studio, not the elevated ones with blocks, but the more solid ones, for when we finally buy a house and my studio can moved to there. They look a lot more easy on and off, but less likely to slip off like my slippers do. I want to have gencarn (spelling?) at each door and also if my throwing room is attached to the house at the door between work and home to keep the two distinct. My hubby thinks I'm weird, I said thankyou, I know 😊. But he also understands why it makes sense. Plus I used to know a Japanese potter who was in the year above me at Uni, Ai Ono, who I recently found out lives in Kyoto now. She was so sweet and kind.

That was very interesting and inspirational too ! I à bit afraid in walking in geta or zori in France since the pavement looks very rough for them. Is the pavement smoother in Japan?

Thank you for this, a useful addition to your previous video about kimono footwear. I dearly want to buy a pair of nihaima geta and wonder whether to buy-or add- rubber on the bottom of the “teeth.” Mostly to avoid making a clip-clopping sound (I don’t always want to attract attention) but also because it seems like rubber would be good against slipping on smooth surfaces. Do you have any thoughts on rubber vs bare wood?

i'm no expert and this might not be exactly what youre looking for but i was researching the outfits of awa odori dancers recently and i remember reading that they glue pieces of bicycle tire to some of their geta to have better grip. although they glue it to the front part to help with their tiptoe technique, and only for certain surfaces, but still maybe this is helpful to you :D

Loved this vid does your foot have to fit on perfectly or does it actually hang off the back a little? It seems when you walked the back of your foot hung off a little?

I have zori but can't wear them because they're so tight I can't quite get my foot in. I have a pair of beautiful geta that I can't wear because the strap between the toes... it slides around and makes my toes hurt. I'm not sure what the problem is there - too loose maybe? I have the same problem with any footwear like that, flip-flops etc, so I don't wear those either, unless they're the kind with the band straight across the foot. (I got 2 pairs of this type from a Danish shop here in Ireland. I love them.)

Such beautiful porcelains! I have never been able to wear and between the toes sandals, zori, or gets because for some reason the area between my toes gets tortured, even with socks, bandaids, everything I've tried. Is there any way to toughen that area up that you or anyone has heard of?

I could spend way too much money in that market. I was fascinated to see you walk all that way with no problem. I have trouble with any toe post shoe so it was interesting to see a pair of 'toe post' shoes that are designed to move with your foot.
