Japan earthquake: Buildings toppled as fires rip through residential areas

Powerful aftershocks rocked central Japan on Tuesday morning as the death toll from a New Year’s Day earthquake rose to 48.
Several strong jolts were felt throughout Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu, including one with a 5.6 magnitude shortly after 10am local time.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the initial 7.6 magnitude quake that struck the region’s Noto peninsula on Monday afternoon rose to 48, with authorities warning the figure was expected to continue to climb.

Ishikawa and Kanazawa are beautiful areas of Japan, with really friendly people. It's always terrible to see such damage and know that there are people hurt and trapped. Hope the rescuers are able to reach affected areas ASAP. 😢

It had been over a couple hundred years since anything this big had come, so it's a real shame, but is also why so much of the area was intact and untouched from too much damage as nobody had invaded or bombed those areas either

@@drinkupmeheartysyoho 48😢 so far & counting. There are still so many people trapped under houses & in buildings. These poor people. Our hearts go out to them. We have family near Tokyo. I was told they felt it all the way over there. These poor people just don't need anymore bad things happening. Now with the planes crashing into.each other at the airport that we're bringing supplies it's all too much. Almost the whole Coast Guard on the 1 plane died, pilot is in critical condition. 400 people were rescued out of the other plane thank God. Just awful.

I know it sounds cold, and I do pray for the victims and confide in the stalwart strength of the Japanese people. But I am impressed by how little damage such a brutal earthquake did to their homes, it shows they know how to build. Here in Italy, a lesser earthquake did way more damage, with old houses and historical areas. Stay strong, the sun always rises after dark.

That's exactly what I was thinking. In Turkey similar earthquakes killed tens of thousands of people. Japan seems to be much less corrupted when it comes to disaster safety and codes.

This is a poorer area of Japan with less strict building codes band initially I didn’t even think the damage was going to be that bad cause we saw similar earthquakes on the east coast that did basically no damage, this reminds me of one earthquake in 2016 that killed 50 people in kumamoto

Pacific rim earthquakes seem to coincide with bad floods and storms in Queensland. I don't know if there is something in that. I remember 2011 like it was yesterday. One after the other, Earthquake Christchurch, floods Queensland and eastern seaboard, earthquake/tsunami Japan. I hope this one isn't as bad as the last one. That was horrific. Japan is prone to natural disasters such as earthquake, tsunami etc. Japanese mentality of resillience is developed by such harsh circumstances. Resilience is sad to be a prime characteristic of the Japanese, and I`m firmly believe that Japanese will rebuild their affected areas very soon.

@@Zenithx3 There is a reason why life is thriving on Earth. One of these reasons is that the planete itself is "alive" with geological events that are sometimes catastrophic to us but is actually good for life on Earth on the long run. Without those, the soil on the surface of our planete would have died a long time ago (having been exhausted of its mineral reserves), plants would no longer grow, and higher lifeform (such as us) would go extinct very quickly. So no, God obviously didn't create these events to harm is, it serves it's purpose to benefit us in the long run.
