JAPAN HAS CHANGED | Overpriced Service Targeted at foreign tourists | Foreigners' Prices, High & Low

In recent months, Japan has witnessed a remarkable surge in foreign visitors, with February 2024 alone welcoming 2.78 million travelers, marking a staggering 107.1% increase compared to February 2019, making it the highest monthly figure since the pandemic began.
However, amidst this tourist boom, there's a caveat to be mindful of the emergence of high-priced goods targeting foreign tourists.
In my previous video, I received some comments asking for more explanation. Following viewer requests for further elaboration, I delved into Japan's governmental efforts over the past decade.
Surprisingly, in the past, there was a "cheap foreign price exclusively for foreigners." And it turns out that some of them still exist.
Additionally, I found instances of dual pricing across various products and services, irrespective of nationality, based on factors like timing, gender, and age.
In this video, I would like to explain the objective findings from a neutral standpoint
By watching this video, you'll gain insights into what offers value and what warrants caution when traveling to Japan.
Please watch it until the end in order to have a reasonable and enjoyable trip to Japan.

With NZD$ 1 = 90 Yen, I'm not going on a 'cheap trip'. 'Foreigner only' items are in many cases not good value, or overpriced. That's not a benefit to visitors at all. As for gender-based pricing, this is something likely to offend some visitors. I cannot comment for other places in New Zealand, but the burden of pricing in tourist areas where I live is carried by tourist and local alike. We pay the inflated prices too. There is no ID, no separate menu system in restaurants, nothing. When the story about the 'tourist trap fish village in Tokyo' broke, I was one of many who said: "No, I am not going there!". A difference of 700 yen may seem like a small amount, but 100 yen here, 200 yen there, 500 yen there, 700 yen there... it turns into daylight robbery based on nothing but 'foreign-ness'. That has other names and does not look good to visitors. It gives a country a bad reputation. Does Japan want to be thought of in the same way as Italy, a country where everyone tries to scam/rob tourists?

I completely agree with you. These kind of practices seem to forget that foreign tourists already invested a lot to reach the given country. After cashing out so much for airplane tickets there must be a benefit visiting another country, be it it's beauty, history or good and cheap local food, whatever. For me when travelling to Japan food is very important, otherwise there are more than enough overpriced Japanese food stores in Europe. Even if I could afford the foreigner only price I don't like the feeling of discrimination and will always avoid such venues. If it gets common practice I might completely avoid the country itself. Regarding the tourist only benefits like JR pass or tax free shopping (as this was thrown back to us a lot): this is a decision of the Japanese government used to be aimed to boost visitor numbers and they can stop offering it anytime. I personally didn't use these much on my Japan trips but even if, it's not the fault of the tourists, neither is overtourism. It there are too many visitors please limit their numbers. It's much better than blaming visitors for missing infrastructure or weak yen. Regarding the behaviour: yes, sadly overtourism comes more ppl and among them there will be those who can't behave well either. We also have it in Europe, I'm sure it's similar everywhere nowadays.

If you go to a restaurant that says in Englisch Samurai, Ninja, Nippon you probably getting ripped off. If you speak some Japanese, go to smaller shops not on the main roads. You get a better deal and sometimes even better food. Also the faces of some older Japanese folks are priceless, once you order in Japanese. They look genuin happy that you are making an afford.

Luckyly I can speak very good Japanese, better than English, so whenever I go to Japan I only use Japanese and I go where Japanese people go. My best advice is that before you go to Japan (but even to other countries) try to learn some Japanese (or the country language), the first time I went to Japan it was in 2003, I was only 19 , I learnt Japanese by myself in 1 year and could speak with japanese people without using English, and I could read at least hiragana and katakana so I could avoid high prices shops. I made Japanese friends who also took me to the best places, restaurants, and this year I go there and meet with my friends after last time 6 years ago. So my hint is Learn Japanese and make Japanese friends. 動画ありがとうございますございます。いろいろ教えてくださってありがとうございます、としさん。

Problem is, Japanese is one of the most complex languages in the world to learn, not helped by the fact that it's partially derived from Chinese as well, so you're essentially learning 2 languages in one. Granted, someone with Chinese fluency have a considerably easier time since they know half of the language already. Ultimately, not everyone has the linguistic skills needed to learn such a complex language or has the patience to do so, especially if they're in their mid 30s to 40s already, their brains won't absorb the information even if they wanted to learn. That's why children learn languages fast, they have over 20+ years to use it before it becomes second nature. English on the other hand is the international language, the fact that the majority of the world speaks it proves just how easy it is to learn compared to other languages. And yet the Japanese just seems to struggle with it even though it's built-in to their education curriculum at a young age. The average citizen just don't feel the need to use English when they're only dealing with their fellow Japanese on a daily basis. But for businesses that works in the tourism industry, there's no excuse not to have English fluency, the common language that any foreign tourists can understand. So while learning Japanese will definitely give a person many advantages in Japan, realistically it's just not very feasible for many people. If anything, Japan should increase their English education and promote their citizens to use English more often, because to a foreign tourist nothing speaks "unwelcoming" than a language barrier that can be solved by a common universal language, only for the locals unwilling to use it.

@@jackylee5850 well I agree with what you said for the part that Japanese people should also make an effort to speak English more or even other languages. For example I am Italian my English is not native but I can say it’s not bad but why even in Apps like NHK world I can find news in 19 different languages except Italian ?? That makes me a bit said, if you assume that all Italian people can speak English then you can assume all European people can ( in fact German and north European people speak English much better because especially for Germans it’s the same language family Anglo Saxon while for neo-Latin language speakers it’s different) so put only English in the app and then Chinese Korean and other Asian languages. No need to put other European languages in the app. Or put Italian too 😂 It’s not true that English is very easy to learn since many European people also struggle with it, you can google for Toefl average score per country and you will see also Italians and French have not very high scores. I had 100 points while 120 was the highest score and I can be proud of it. English has also many differences between Oxford British English that I learnt at high school and American English that is mainly taught in China and Japan schools( e.g when I told my American friend that I was getting off well with a girl I meant that my dates with her were going well and that I thought she loved me too as I loved her but that was not what he understood). So just think about how difficult English can be for people who come from such a different language background like Chinese and Japanese. When I lived in Shanghai and studied Chinese there I often met Chinese university students who still struggled with English grammar rules that I learnt at the first or second year of high school because Chinese grammar is very easy and simple compared to English one. It looks like ancient English, you can read a book by Ernest Fenollosa who compared Chinese to ancient English if you want

I’m in Fukuoka as the time of watching this video. I have been mindful of the costs, so far the meals were under ¥4000 for a large meal rather than a ¥6000 plus for a seafood rice bowl. Also the pay per hour in Japan would be around ¥1000 compared to $35 AUD.

How do I know if the restaurants/stores are overpriced on purpose? are michelin restaurants in tokyo targeted for foreigners or it's same for local?
@SmoolMurloc
@SmoolMurloc 2 месяца назад
Hmm... I would say you can tell it is overpriced on purpose by knowledge. Looking at shorts on youtube or instagram helps a lot to get an idea 😉 For instance, (I hope I am not mistaken), if I want to look at ramen shop, I would like to aim for 1000Y maximum (except if I want to add expensive toppings) , and around 2000Y for an unadon (big bowl of rice with eel on top) If i see a restaurant menu that constantly go above those prices, I would question myself if it is indeed aimed toward tourists. One typical exception I noticed when looking at shorts is when the food was crafted with trendy or difficult techniques, or is a themed-food (for example, a dessert themed on Hello-kitty) Last but not least, the localization. When I look at some expat' videos, it seems that intentionnally overpriced restaurant in tourists streets and areas. Just by walking a few minutes outside of these places, you can find wonderful and not-overpriced restaurants ~
