I currently live in Japan, and here are my recommendations (especially towels) if you come back (or if anyone else visits!). Otsukaya is another brand of fabric store. The one in Nagoya has four floors full of fabrics and notions, and a further floor full of other crafts. I also think there is one in Osaka. Craft Heart Tokai is another craft store, they sell fabric (and new Sylvanians) as well as other crafts. These tend to be much smaller but much more common, at least in my area of Japan. Imabari, Ehime on Shikoku is famous for towels, but they are more wash cloth style. I do believe that these are only manufactured in Ehime, but I could be wrong. However some of the Japanese 'sweat cloth' style are fairly similar to tea towel texture, just softer. The Towel Museum in Imabari is fairly difficult to get to on public transport so I have never been, however you can buy these towels literally everywhere in Ehime. In the capital of the prefecture, Matsuyama, we have like three dedicated towel shops included one with a similar towel display to the one at the Towel Museum. This shop is much easier to get to as it is in the shopping arcade near Dogo Onsen - this onsen was the inspiration for the one in Spirited Away. In Matsuyama you can get second-hand kimonos for as little as 500 yen/£2.50 but the more common price is between 1000-2000 yen/£5-£10. I have seen others in the range of 5k - 8k yen, but these tend to be the proper silk ones, often with embroidery or gold thread, so I think they are worth the price if you can afford one. Tokushima, also on Shikoku, has a huge indigo dyeing heritage. I've yet to go, but I've bought some indigo threads from a craft fair in Matsuyama that came from Tokushima and they are fantastic. Each one is unique, and they were only two quid for a packet of like 8 of them. Shikoku is the most rural of Japan's main islands, but each of the prefectures has a decent sized city to start in, and the rural surroundings are beautiful, with lots of local culture and colour. The island is famous for the 88 temple pilgramage, and Imabari is the other end of the Shimanami Cycle Path that starts in Hiroshima prefecture. You can fly in from Tokyo, or you can actually do Matsuyama as a day trip from Hiroshima on the ferry.

Oh my goodness I am itching to get back and visit everywhere you have just said! If I can somehow save up for a 'business research trip' (could be years to be fair haha), I will definitely be adding these to my itinerary - thank you!!

It may be possible to put together a retreat like Laura does from @leftcoastrevivals and take people to all the places looking for fabric and vintage kimonos and then you get paid to hang out with cool people and visit places you want to see.

Don't alter the kimono! The kimonos are meant to be a bit longer like that and wider to adjust to different body sizes. Look up some videos on how to put them on but basically you sort of fold them in the middle with ties to hold in place and the obi (the belt) will cover up the "mess" that's there.
@afrayed_upcycling
@afrayed_upcycling 5 месяцев назад
Okay definitely not cutting the kimono! Any chance you know the best way to clean one? It has a few marks and I really don’t want to ruin the fabric😅
@kansaibeyond
@kansaibeyond 5 месяцев назад
@@afrayed_upcycling Unfortunately not, sorry. But if you have any local Japanese culture centers/clubs or anything like that, they might have kimono experts and maybe I'd reach out to someone there? In Japan, I know some people would just bring it to a dry cleaner who have experience cleaning kimono.... but I think the general consensus is that it depends on the fabric type and it'll determine if it can be cleaned or not. Definitely try to see if you can reach out to someone nearby and see :)

I follow a Japanese minimalist on RU-vid called Samurai Matcha. In one video, he talks about how he stopped using bath towels because they're "bulky and heavy" and switched to using Tenugui towels instead, after bathing.

I live in Tokyo you went at the right time as you are getting a lot for your money. I could have told you were to go, what second hand shops to go. Book off is a fantastic place for second hand fashion books. For as low as 100 yen. Even mode off and hobby off. I wish I knew now. I bet you never went to daiso, can do seria 3 coins or the 100 yen stores. You would have been in your element!!!

Thanks for this. It is my desire to go to Japan, have to encourage hubby... It would have been good to know how much you paid per meter (in UK pounds) for the lovely fabrics? The choice and creativity in Japan is endless. I have a HUGE stash of Japanese sewing books, that I have been collecting for years. Am enjoying watching you experiment with different fabrics, very inspiring.

do you have a recommendation for buying foreigner-sized kimono or is it a case of just keep looking? I've bought many (cheap, old) kimono for fabric and have yet to find one that fits me properly, although I have one that fits as an open jacket. I'm 5'8 with a large waist. (An obaasan saw me in it once and tugged on my sleeve and whispered 'kimono desu ka?' (is it a kimono?) and when I answered yes, her eyes got even bigger as she it was wonderful. If anyone in the comments is wondering if you can wear kimono or kimono-inspired things or literally any Japanese culture as a non-Japanese person - please do! They love it, particularly as some older parts of Japanese culture are in danger of being lost entirely.
