The whole “complimenting the man for washing the dishes” reminds me of how some people call men watching over their OWN children for “babysitting” - It sure as hell isn’t called babysitting when a woman looks after her own children!! Nor should it be called that when a man does it!! 😠😠

Hell idk if i'd even consider it babysitting if your parents or siblings watched the kids for a while, just seems like a family taking care of each other to me.

@@pat8618 while i 100% agree that doing the bare minimum is nothing to sneeze at, as the child of a deadbeat absent father, that has skewed the way that i look at fathers who ARE present in their child's life. usually when you hear "omg he's such a good dad taking care of his kid!" its because that person knows what its like all too well for a father to not give two flying fucks about their child. i experienced it first hand and i had to witness my god brother go through it his entire life too. I think the better way to approach it is to be happy that the father is present while also acknowledging that mothers are expected to do this regardless. i think you can still appreciate the fathers who do the right thing without dismissing the mothers who already do the right thing TLDR: praise both parents equally for being present in their child's life, because a lot of children in the world dont have EITHER parent. All children deserve parents but not all parents deserve children.

Fun fact: in 1940's America (And earlier/later), and I expect many other places, pregnant women and new mothers weren't expected to do chores. That's where their own mother or MIL would move in, lady-neighbors helped, someone was hired if they were rich enough, whatever. Taking care of her body and not putting the fetus at risk, and then taking care of the newborn were her socially expected priorities. I expect the baby boom wouldn't have been so much as a boom as a bang without that support structure. So this flyer wasn't even a regression to 1940's 'baby factory or maid', it's was an evolution to 'baby factory AND maid'.

In actuality, really it's just boys and men being forced into suppressing all their unprocessed sadness and trauma - leaving anger and aggression as the only acceptable emotions for males to display. Living with that kind of mental state and bringing it home does not bode well to creating a happy home environment; to put it extremely mildly.

If you're a woman, I can't expect you to understand until you actually have it coursing through your veins. Even when I do give you credit, anger and aggression were also frowned upon. That's why we have laws about it. Furthermore, the current culture frowns upon men expressing frustration from lack of purpose anyway. What's that? When the brother raised first, I was so terrified as he used to be abusive to me into his 20's. My mother said what happened in front of her was my fault-as a younger sister, I should be obedient to my brother, she said. This kind of sexism may still exist in other families in Japan. As an American living in Japan, it’s crazy when I talk to Japanese women and the way in which they are treated by their husbands. As a teacher, I see how Japanese boys are spoiled by their mothers rather than Japanese girls. Mothers treat their boys like princes and their daughters like employees. So when these princes grow up, they expect their wives to treat them exactly like their mothers did. It’s a vicious circle. My wife is Japanese and I remember her saying that she would not treat our son like a Prince because she hated how Japanese boys are treated, but of course once our son was born, she immediately began treating him like a Prince. It’s just the way of Japanese moms I guess. They know that they are raising monsters,but they are unable to break the habit.
@watchingvids423
@watchingvids423 Год назад
Yikes; those mothers are not only neglecting their daughters, but also setting up their sons for failure by raising their sons to have unrealistic expectations to living with literally anyone else - and not just their future lover. This mindset when it comes to raising the next generation is just detrimental for all of society in general. It probably also plays a factor (among many others) into why Japan's birthrate is declining.

This helps no one, especially men. I’m a mom of three kids, just had a little boy 8 months ago, and it’s messed up how little the father is considered during the whole ordeal. It’s extremely hard for us mothers, but pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood still does take a huge toll on the fathers, but because of outdated crap like that, if anyone tries to talk about it everyone automatically assumes we’re trying to drag the world back into the 1950’s. I am so blessed to have a strong husband who always, ALWAYS, put me and the kids first, but it sucks that this junk is still spread around and makes it so difficult to have an actual dialogue about men’s true wants and needs during parenting without everyone just calling them an incel for daring to mention it.
@ckwi2245
@ckwi2245 Год назад
I think this was part of the original goal of the article. The constant burden of fathers is often ignored and the other smaller actions once they get home aren't deemed valuable or appreciated either, so it was intended more as, remember he is actually contributing so at least show appreciation when he can show up. The article could've very well also been written as a condemnation of mothers for not getting sucked into the abyss of Japanese Work Culture of essentially 14-18 hour days, not being able to see their families basically ever, and essentially hand their paycheck over to your more often at home spouse. The very unnuanced and aggressive look at it basically turned Joey sexist against men by insinuating and perpetuating Husband = ATM + Slave stereotype, which isn't healthy either. Balance is needed yes, but too often people ignore one side's contribution to the scale. I'm assuming the people who made this article originally used a stereotypical Japanese Corporate Employee as the imagery for the husband, what makes them want to come home from some ridiculous working conditions and be a part of the family if all the wife cares about is the paycheck and what burden can be taken off her, and even that isn't appreciated just expected. Do I think they should get home and not provide any relief for their wives, no, but also the wives not act in a way that would make them want to pick up overtime rather than going home to someone who gives off the impression that they're hated, resented, not wanted, and/or not appreciated. Saying thank you to someone for effectively doing normal or expected things isn't oppression like Joey is insinuating. Now just waiting for someone to call saying "Thanks for the meal, it was delicious" to their wives 1950s era Stockholm syndrome oppression of women.

@hotakatsu7637
@hotakatsu7637 Год назад
@notuxnobux Pretty sure child-bearing is more-so correlated with a country’s standard of living. People in countries with a high standard of living aren’t required to have children in order to keep themselves afloat economically. They don’t need a child to take care of them once they’re old. Most people don’t want a bunch of kids (responsibility) and some people don’t want kids at all. Not to mention that people conceive later in life nowadays thanks to birth-control and increased awareness/knowledge surrounding sex and the responsibilities/costs involved in having children. All of which slows the rate of birth. A reason why certain (sexist) societies/communities tend to birth more children may also be rooted in religion or a lack of knowledge. The Amish for example have a ton of kids due to both factors. Basically what I’m trying to say is that a lower birthrate isn’t inherently indicative of dissatisfaction, nor is a higher birthrate inherently indicative of higher levels of satisfaction/happiness. It’s all a “case by case basis” kind of deal.

@@notuxnobux The poorer the county economically, the more children they produce. You would think it would be the opposite, but it's like hotakatsu said, child production is heavily correlated to a country's standard of living. Heck, here in the US, poor folks reproduce like rabbits, while rich folks have one kid (per mistress if they're a man) and a few adopted ethnic children from Africa or Asia. That just seems to be the unfortunate pattern of things. Fact is stranger than fiction.
@squirrel670
@squirrel670 Год назад
@@DullestStar9299it is because of lower education as well. Areas with less sex education like have much more teen pregnancies because abstinence or nothing is the "sex education". Even both parents discussing things properly with their child lowers the unintended pregnancies. It's also not usually a child by a mistress, if they were cheating the time of having a kid is not intentional and not a couple based option. Of course, I'm not saying all Japanese men, but at least that's how my wife's ex-bfs behave. TLDR: they essentially want and expect another woman to mother them AND be their life partner at the same time. That's why she broke it off with all of them, and when she started dating me, a non-Japanese, found it surprisingly refreshing. I may sound like I'm blowing my own horn, but hey, for once in her life my wife felt she isn't pressured to be a simple housewife and is free to pursue her career with my full support.

I usually don't comment on videos, but here goes. It turns out that this flyer was made from the city running a survey on married men asking them things like "What do you wish your wife did more?" "What do you wish your wife did less?" "What are some things your wife does that make you happy?" Interestingly, an equivalent flyer exists for - and is distributed to - new fathers. It's based off the same sort of questions, except it was asked to new mothers. Of course, the writer of the article makes zero mention of this. Does Japan need to update its views on women? Probably. Does it deserve this level of vitriol with no knowledge of the wider context? Most definitely not. We all need a little context in our lives, the more the better.

While i think they could have done better by giving coverage to both sides. It is still a common thing, a bad one, but common, to talk about an specific issue in a post or online article without doing a deep dive, more often in journalism where timing matters. You encounter this more often if you are into academia and see journalists butcher studies to convey a narrative or just have a catchy tittle, science communication is hard. I think we can care about all situations at the same time and saying "This is super important, this is a big issue" does not mean others are less.

From what I see, the office culture is slowly changing in Japan where there is more of a work life balance. Long hours in the office are horrible for the workers mental health. I worked for a Japanese company near Seattle and they did the long hours thing, the pay sucked, I did get a lot of OT, I slept through most of the weekends, and I was so happy when I quit. If the work life balance issue changes in Japan then I think that will be a huge improvement and people will have more time to be with their spouse, help out around their home, and have kids.

Men think that way because they were raised that way. My aunt would always tell her pregnant frients (with boys) to be careful how they raise their sons, and make sure their sons don't turn out like the men they ran from in their younger years. I remember when I was at my friend's house, she was in a relationship for 7 years, they both worked. She was a manager, working 50 hours a week, always on her feet, overlooking the staff and the business, he was a delivery guy working 40 h, better pay, saying he loves to drive and that he feels relaxed when working. He would always expect her to come home, clean the house, cook and wash the dishes, she had no help from him at home. I even heard him say "I will not get home after work and do the dishes!" but he expected her to do just that, he would not even wash his own plate, not even 1. I was quite shocked, because he was not like that at home, he would always help around his mother... I obviously know guys that are responsable and self suficient, they respect their house hold and they want it to be well kept and clean, they help their partners, but I also know guys that think it's not their job/responsability at all to work on their house hold, do chores, help in the house and in raising their kid, even if nowadays both people in a relationship have jobs bring money in, the household falls on the women's shoulders in those cases.

Even fictional media from the 80's shows these stories of Japanese men being jealous of their babies/future babies. (Ofc, not saying it is a Japan-only issue.) Like, how can anyone expect women to want to have children when they know they are essentially only going to be punished for it during and after pregnancy, perhaps for decades? I really would never want to live there, much less have a family there.

Wait until the people who wrote those flyers realise that there's a reason why pregnant people/ new mothers can't stay on top of the housework (Pregnancy is tough, it can even make some people bedridden, let along taking care of a WHOLE NEW HUMAN BEING right after 9 months of pregnancy and GIVING BIRTH which PERMINANTLY ALTERS YOUR BODY). If the husbands are that pissed off and unwilling to do anything themselves, they should hire a maid to help their wife, who is clearly in need of support, so that the wife can care for herself and the baby.
