I'm currently abusing a 14-day JR pass making lots of trips. Since I arrived in Tokyo I've been to Sapporo, Hakodate and Sendai then I returned to Tokyo to pick up the Sunrise Seto overnight train (also covered by the JR pass, at least for the lowest-cost accommodation which involves sleeping on a tatami mat like a capsule hotel bunkbed). This dropped me off in Okayama, from there I went to Hiroshima, Onomichi and Nagasaki and I'm now overnighting in Osaka. Still more trips to make and stops off in the shinkansen waiting rooms to come. Couple of things -- the card-ticket version of the JR pass has a magstripe on the back and it wears out after a dozen or so times through a barrier mechanism. This isn't an issue with regular tickets, they're only used once or twice before they expire but the JR pass is likely to be used a lot more times than that. My own pass quit working in the barriers after four days of over-usage. Fortunately the manned ticket gate staff accepted seeing it and let me pass through, like in the old days of the folder-style pass. Even more surprisingly I was offered a replacement pass! The card had torn a little (some ticket barrier person had punched a hole in it for some reason) and one of the ticket gate staff took it away long with my passport and returned after five minutes with a freshly printed JR pass. I didn't think this was supposed to be possible but there seemed to be process for it to happen. Loss or total destruction of a pass would probably be too much though.

I have a question - in the video you said that if you buy the JR Pass directly from the official JR website online, then you only need to show your passport to pick it up once you arrive in the country. Does this mean that you don't need to have anything posted to your home address in advance before you arrive in Japan?

In these routes, that would mean I can use the JR pass for all the JR lines and then I will have to get a Suica/Passmo card for the latter, right? Just hoping my traversing will be smooth! Thank you

Very good video, thank you. I'm still on the fence about getting the JR pass due to my particular schedule: 11 day trip landing in Kansai Int. Airport (Osaka) - Osaka -> Nara -> Kyoto -> Tokyo If we activate the pass as soon as we land it'll have about 2 days left when we get to Tokyo. The best value we get is the shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo, which costs around 14k one-way (around $120 depending on exchange rate) from Kyoto. We may take a day trip to Kamakura, but afterwards we stay within city limits for the remainder of our itinerary until our departure from Haneda Airport. As far as our current schedule goes, we come up short of getting the full $230 value the pass costs, but since we're still in planning stages we'll ultimately see if it's worth it. Cheers!
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
An alternative for you: go back to Kansai International and fly up to Narita. Peach, Jetstar and others are pretty cheap. For everything else, look at the short JR passes, like Tokyo Wide Pass (www.jreast.co.jp/multi/en/pass/tokyowidepass.html?src=gnavi), Kansai Area Pass (www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/kansai/) There are lots of less well-known city/regional passes, and especially for the Kansai bit, you're better off skipping the JR Pass: www.japan-guide.com/e/e2357_kansai.html

Hi! I’m JR train conductor🚄 New information on the JR PASS was announced today. From October this year onwards, you can ride "Nozomi" and "Mizuho" with a JR PASS for an additional fee. At the same time, there will be a significant price increase. For example, the current 7-day fee is 29,650 yen at its lowest, but after October it will be 50,000 yen.
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
Thanks for the info! What do you think is the main reason for the enormous price rise?
@nanbuline2092200
@nanbuline2092200 Год назад
@@japanunravelled I think the main reason for the price increase is chronic congestion. Currently, reserved seats on the Shinkansen "Hikari" are crowded. Also, in order to promote the use of trains from Tokyo/Osaka to Kyushu (Fukuoka/Kumamoto/Kagoshima), the Japanese government has requested the JR Group to allow the use of JR PASS on Nozomi and Mizuho trains. However, if the JR PASS were to allow boarding on Nozomi trains, the profits of JR Central (the operating company of the Tokaido Shinkansen) would be greatly reduced. Therefore, JR Group will raise the price significantly and increase the profit sharing to JR Central.
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
Thanks for your insight! It's a shame the Nozomi/Mizuho won't be included and need an extra charge though. I do have one more question: as a conductor, have you ever charged passengers the 1000 yen for travelling with oversized baggage but not having the necessary seat reservation?
@nanbuline2092200
@nanbuline2092200 Год назад
@@japanunravelled I'm sorry if my words weren't enough... From October, instead of a big price increase, it seems that you can ride "Nozomi" and "Mizuho" with a JR PASS for a small additional fee. "Nozomi" is JR Central's biggest revenue source, so we will raise the price significantly in exchange for being able to ride on it with the JR PASS. Thanks for your questions! Actually, I'm a JR Hokkaido conductor, so I'm not familiar with that issue. But my high school friend has been a Tokaido Shinkansen driver for seven years. According to him, the 1,000-yen fee is not always collected now, especially for foreign tourists because it is difficult to measure the luggage size on the train and explain the rules in English to foreigners who do not know the rules. However, JR Central is proceeding with the installation of luggage racks with security locks near the deck (locked with a PIN or IC card, like the Narita Express). Once construction on the vehicle is complete, the rules will be stricter and reservations will always be required for oversized luggage.
@japanunravelled

Thank you so much for the answer. I've seen those luggage racks and wondered what was happening with them! Please comment on future videos if you have any useful information for viewers and myself, it's highly appreciated!

As usual the video is very informative and helpful. Thanks. Do seniors over the age of 67 have a discount on public transportation? We would like to arrive immediately upon landing in Narita to Kyoto and stay in the city and its surroundings for at least a week and then continue south, in that case would you recommend us to buy the JR ticket for a week? Or just pay the cost of the train ride to Kyoto and there just buy a local ticket for a whole week?
@annebaker7678
@annebaker7678 Год назад
If you are planning on getting to Kyoto for your first night, I'd suggest getting a flight from Narita to Itami or Kansai airport. You can fly cheaper than by bullet train, especially with JAL Explorer pass. The JR pass will not be worth it if you are just taking one bullet train to Kyoto, and staying there for the full 7 days. Though if you are continuing south, and will eventually need to get back to Tokyo, it might be worth getting a JR pass for that leg of your trip.
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
Glad it helped you. I'm not sure that there are discounts that you can easily get, but the JR Pass already gives a monumental discount on the full-fare tickets anyway. As @annebaker7678 points out, it won't be worth it getting the pass just to go to Kyoto and stay there for a week. I'd also recommend flying into Osaka Itami or Kansai International to get to Kyoto. For going south, there are some regional passes from JR West that might be handy - www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/ To get back to Narita, definitely look at flying from down south - much quicker than the bullet train.

IC cards are a fancy way of being lazy and not using cash or faffing around with tickets. There are good points and bad points, but many people use them for non-JR transport like the subway. You'll have to stand in line like everyone else to get your pass with the QR code. Once you've physically received your JR Pass, you can then make reservations online at any time between the hours of 6am and 11pm (maintenance from 11pm to 6am) and do not need to go to the ticketing counter or ticketing machine. Side note: if you make a reservation online, and you go to the ticketing machine to pick up your reservation tickets, you will NO LONGER be able to modify this trip through the website. You're locked in. The only way to resolve this is through the ticketing counter. The agent will ask for your reservation tickets so they can be discarded and a new reservation can be made right then and there. It would be a better idea to make your reservation online, then pick up your reservation tickets just as you're about to board and/or you are 100% certain you will complete the itinerary. By not physically picking up your reservation tickets from the ticketing machine, you are still allowed to make changes/cancelations online. In fact, during my trip, the agent on board never asked to see my reservation ticket.

Suica, Icoca, and the others are prepaid cards that you tap on the entry gates to get in and out of transport systems. Like Oyster in London, only with cool characters. You just need to load it with cash and the fare is calculated for you. These are called IC cards and are useful for subway, bus and inner-city travel. JR pass is a huge discount ticket and works best when used for travelling over long distances. There's no point in getting one if you're mostly staying in cities. For that trip, JR pass is only going to save you a ton of money on the journey to and from Osaka. I put it in the "colossal waste of a pass" category, but if you're only interested in Tokyo and Osaka and just want the most economical way, go for it. But I'd suggest you make some side visits to not Tokyo and not Osaka...

I just want to know if its better to get the JR pass for seven days or kansai pass for osaka days and tokyo wide pass for tokyo days? Are the destinations covered by Tokyo wide pass also covered by Rail Pass or not? Thank you.
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
Are you coming back to Osaka or flying out of Tokyo? Difficult to judge without knowing your destinations. But the JR Pass will likely not pay off with only a one way shinkansen journey, plus any trips in the Tokyo Wide area. The coverage differs, and it's actually slightly better with the Tokyo Wide, because some private railways are included. Put your trips into the calculator and see what's most economical: www.japanstation.com/japan-rail-pass-value-calculator/ I suspect it would be cheaper to fly (Peach; Jetstar) from Osaka to Tokyo then get the Tokyo Wide. Hope that helps.

Hi, thanks for such an informative video. I'm not sure if you covered this, but is there a limit to the number of reservations someone can make with their JR pass at one of the ticket machines? We have a set itinerary and will be traveling with possibly oversized luggage. Would I be able to go to a ticket counter and reserve a seat from Tokyo to Kyoto, Kyoto to Himeji, Himeji to Osaka, and Osaka back to Tokyo all in one go, or would I need to wait until a trip is completed to reserve another seat? Thanks!
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
Thanks! There is no limit to how many reservations you can make. You can make all of those reservations in one go, either at the machine or at a manned ticket office. You don't need to wait until one journey is finished before reserving another. At the machine you need to scan your JR pass and enter your passport number before reserving a seat. If you find a ticket office with few people waiting, I'd suggest going there as the process can be laborious at the machine. The staff are very quick usually - just write down all your trains, times and seat requirements clearly. Does that help?

There is a Tokyo subway pass tourists with the tourist visa in their passport can buy at various places in Tokyo, like tourist information offices and some big stores. 1500 yen (about 15 dollars US) will get you a 72 hour pass covering all of the Tokyo Metro and Toei lines. The 72 hours start when you first use the pass so if you start it at 2 p.m. on a Thursday if will still be valid up to 1.59 p.m. on Sunday. It's a handy alternative to getting around Tokyo even if you don't have a JR pass. There are also cheaper 24hr and 48 hr passes and you can buy another one after your first one expires if you need it.

Unless you're thinking of doing several side trips from Tokyo in those 9 days, there's no point in having a JR pass that covers so much time spent there. Inner city travel is dirt cheap compared to the shinkansen and limited express trains. I'd get a 7-day pass to cover most, if not everything, from Mt. Fuji onwards.

It seems like ticketing office at NRT term1 opens 6:30am instead of 8:30am at travel ctr and concierge ctr according to JR official site. Do you have any input or suggestion to avoid lines but able to go Kyoto within 6 hours via NEX/Hikari? Good question! This is really only relevant if you're buying from a travel agency, because they'll send you the physical exchange order. I'd try to buy it at least 3 weeks beforehand to allow for any mishaps or delays. You can often have it delivered to an address in Japan, in case you're short on time.

I’m traveling from May1-9 and I’m lending in heneda airport in Tokyo. I’m not sure should I purchase jr pass In US or by from official site. I’m lending after 4:30 pm and worry about jr office will be closed. I’m traveling from airport to Koyoto. Can you give me idea what way I should by from official site which I will be able to reserve seats online and specifically on the holiday
@japanunravelled

Buy it direct from JR online and start reserving seats - japanrailpass.net/
@nateshf9303
@nateshf9303 Год назад
Here's your dilemma - Assume you land on time, claim your luggage (hopefully you only have a carry-on bag), and are able to get through immigration/custom by 6 pm, you still need to get in line like everyone else to claim your physical JR Pass even though you bought it online via the official site, you might be able to get out of the airport around 7:30, if you're lucky. But you still have to get to Tokyo or Shinagawa JR Station to hop on the shinkansen to get to Kyoto (I think you meant Kyoto). Consider activating your pass the day after you arrive and just spend one night in Chiba or Tokyo. This way you don't need to rush to get to Kyoto and "waste" one day on your pass. Hope this makes sense.
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
This is excellent advice. Activating one day later can help in the event of delays due to typhoons or other problems too. Plus you don't have to rush as much!

@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
If by "websites" you mean travel agencies selling the JR Pass, they are selling you an exchange order, the physical bit of paper you need to take to the exchange counter when you get to Japan. They want to know when you're planning to arrive to make sure you get the exchange order in time, because they have to mail it to you. When buying this way, JR staff will ask you on which date you want to activate the pass at the time that you turn in the exchange order. If you buy from JR directly, you have to specify the activation date when you buy the pass online, and you can't change that date later. Does that help?

I'll get to a video about it eventually, but for now, that's an excellent alternative pass. Cheaper (23,000 yen), you can use Nozomi and Mizuho, and it also goes up part of the Hokikriku Shinkansen, which is convenient for seeing Kanazawa and Toyama. You can only make 6 seat reservations at the ticket machines though, although they are unlimited if you go to the ticket office.

Hey Thanks for the info. I'm going to be in japan for 5 months as an exchange student. I was told anyone who isn't there on a tourist visa cannot get the JR pass (this includes student visas). I have my ticket set to go there a week before my classes start to explore, but even though I am a tourist for my first week since I will be entering the country as a student I will have the visa stamp in my passport (not the tourist one). So I was wondering, If I reserve the JR pass from the US and go to the JR store in the airport to pick it up will they check which stamp I have in my passport or will they just check to see if I have a US passport as proof? Do they even check your passport when picking up the JR pass (since I am clearly a foreigner will they even check)? If I reserve and pay for the pass in the US and deny me the pass in Japan do you know if I will get my money back? Also, can I just get the pass sent to the US so I don't have to deal with picking up the JR pass in Japan. Sorry for all the questions I'm in a very niche scenario and its hard finding people to ask these questions to.
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
It's a good question - essentially you're in the same boat as me! Unfortunately, the staff do check for the tourist visa stamp, so you can't do this. If you wanted to try it (not recommended) you could still send your unused exchange order back to the travel agency and get your money back minus a fee, depending on their rules. However, there is good news, in that there are some passes that you can get, whatever visa you have. I'm thinking specifically about the Tokyo Wide Pass, and the 2 kind of JR East Passes (top of this page: www.jreast.co.jp/multi/en/pass/ ). In my opinion, these are in many ways better than the actual JR pass! Hope that helps!

After you get the pass, you can reserve at both ticket offices and ticket machines.
