Once important note I learned earlier today is if you have larger (checked size) luggage you have to get a special oversized bag reserve for shinkansen or have your luggage forwarded via a service.
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy Год назад
yep! luggage forwarding is so useful too!

Is it very difficult to get that reserve? How you do it ?
@joy12division
@joy12division Год назад
@ You can go to a booth with a person or a machine (I prefer the machine as they had no line and do include multiple languages). The machine way with a JR pass you can the QR code on your pass, it asks you how you want to book/reserve, where and when you want to go, and if you have oversized luggage. If yes it will show you oversized luggage seats that are available for your train that day. You select your seat and hit submit. It will print out your ticket to show your reservation, but you will still go through the gates using your JR pass. If your luggage is about 24 inches size (samsonite medium checked luggage) you can put it overhead no problem.

Did a 10 day holiday to Japan and set my activation date for the days I took the bullet train outside Tokyo. The 7 day pass is cheaper then the current round trip price to Kyoto/Tokyo so it should be worth the price for Americans going to Japan for a week long trip. I would recommend setting the activation date to when you start taking your bullet trains, because any travel after the first ride, the pass pays for itself. We typically start the pass on the last week of the trip since that'll cover bullet trains, outside of Tokyo travel, and the trip back to the airport for departure. Literally right when you land go to the ticket office, do your sim cards and pass at the airport. You can set your activation date of the pass then so you're good to go for your whole trip when you leave the airport. The place we do our Rail Pass also does data SIM cards and sometimes they do bundle discounts. If you have Children under 6 they will travel for free, but if you're a person who travels to Kyoto or surrounding Tokyo area by bullet train the pass will probably save you at least $50. You can also fly to Kyoto for even a cheaper price but if you're on vacation the shinkansen is a great experience and way more convenient then having to go back to the airport again.

Just purchased my National JR 7-day Pass through Klook. Cheapest price I've seen yet. He's right in saying that you really need to do research and plan your trip first. Japan is not the type of country you just fly into and decide to pay for a train ticket ad hock. It will cost you out the wazoo. I'm doing Tokyo all the way down to Fukuoka in a nine day trip. On the last day of your pass validity, make sure you get a train back to where you want to depart Japan or you will pay. Great and informative video.

I have travelled to Japan six times and have bought a JR pass five times. I have had one week and two passes. I certainly have saved money on every occasion by having a pass. I have used it on the ferry as well on two occasions. I have travelled from fukuoka in the south and as far as asahikawa in Hokkaido. It is certainly a great way to get around. The last time I was in Japan I went on a day trip to Fukushima, from Ueno. On the return journey I turned on my speed app on my iPhone. It recorded a top speed of 319.5 kph.

Yup, definitely found them useful but as you rightly say, it is not for everyone especially for some that really stay in close by or even within one city. It should be noted that some regional passes are better than the full jr pass in that you are allowed to travel on the fastest bullet train available! E.g the tohoku , the hiroshima osaka pass ! I also saw that jr east pass now is all online where you can buy and reserve seats on it!

@redfish337
@redfish337 Год назад
IMPORTANT INFO for people planning on getting a national pass. There are MANY different train companies in Japan. JR is mostly responsible for the routes between major cities. The coverage within cities is passable in Tokyo, okay in Osaka, and almost nonexistent in most other major cities. You will still need to pay fares in most cities to the local train companies. So while you should be aware of that, the actual important thing is that the fare in most cities will probably run you 500-1000 yen per day. The JR pass is along the lines of 3000 yen per day. It's a money loser while you're in cities. Don't activate before your first shinkansen. Let it expire with your last shinkansen. So you probably do NOT need 100% coverage since you won't need it in your first and last city- use the 500-1000 day tickets rather than the ~3000 yen a day JR pass. I don't know if this is properly explained in the video, but I see a lot of people mentioning the 21 day pass. I've gotten it several times myself. When I went for like 6 weeks. You probably don't need a 3 week pass unless you're staying for 4-5 weeks total. You probably don't need a 2 week pass unless you're staying over ~16-18 days total. I know they charge so much for the 1 week pass that it seems not so bad to upgrade to 2 or 3... and I know the amount of time that people really want is about 10 days and not offering that length of time means you're stuck between 7 and 14 which is a hard decision. But most of you probably don't need more than a 1 week pass and hardly any of you should need a 3 week one. The point of the JR pass is saving money so make sure you're actually getting the best deal out of your itinerary.
@tovahwulf
@tovahwulf Год назад
So, question, I'm staying for 16 days. I've calculated my expenses and I don't really see the pass as necessary as it seems to be far more expensive getting it than just paying as I go. I plan on going to Tokyo, staying for four-five days exploring before I head off to Kyoto for 10-11 days (visiting Osaka, Kobe, Nara, Himeji and Awaji Island) then heading back to Tokyo for my flight. Would the JR Rail pass be recommended with where I'm going?
@redfish337
@redfish337 Год назад
@@tovahwulf No, because you have to leave Tokyo and do the Kansai portion and get back to Tokyo within 7 days to justify the pass (assuming you don't take a night bus or domestic flight one way). You require the upgrade to a 14 day pass, but aren't adding anything super significant over a plain Tokyo--->Kansai--->Tokyo itinerary to justify paying 14 days instead of 7, so in the end no pass should be best. You could conceivably make it worth it, but honestly probably the biggest benefit to getting it would be in front-loading the wasted money. Basically, so you feel like you always may as well take the nicest, fastest train (you can take with the pass) because you already paid for it. But if you don't get the pass taking all of the nicest, fastest trains pay as you go probably still comes out a little cheaper, and ;eaves the slower and cheaper options available as an option.
@redfish337
@redfish337 Год назад
Also, if I wasn't clear enough. If you aren't going back to Tokyo for anything in particular, or even just a day or two of shopping or looking around but pretty much just to go to the airport to catch your flight- it is likely to your benefit to just fly from Osaka to Tokyo domestically. Especially if you're flying in and out of Narita. I won't criticize anyone for deciding to go back to Tokyo for a day before going home even if it costs more time or money. Maybe you just want to breath in a couple of those sights one more time. Fine enough. But if you're basically just going train to train to train to the airport, probably may as well just fly from Osaka to Tokyo.
@tovahwulf
@tovahwulf Год назад
@@redfish337 I'll definitely keep this info in mind, thank you! I don't mind the suggestion of flying from Osaka back to Tokyo, though I assumed it would be more expensive than train.
@redfish337
@redfish337 Год назад
@@tovahwulf Shinkansen is very comfortable and convenient compared to flights. Speed is kept comparable, door to door. So plane has to be cheaper or everyone would just take the shinkansen. However, since the convenience you're paying for with shinkansen is city center to city center travel, when your actual destination is an airport, with most of these fairly far out of the cities, especially Narita... that convenience of the shinkansen is instead convenience for the domestic flight and the balance shifts towards flying. That said, the shinkansen is basically a cemented price and the flight price is, as typical of flight prices, volatile. I've heard that it's cheapest to just go to the airport and take the next one, but that's obviously risky compared to locking a passable one in. It's also basically cemented in terms of scheduling, with little besides the sort of weather that should also cause flight delays causing more than 1 or 2 minutes of delay. Basically all the typical issues with domestic flights and flying in general apply so plan accordingly if you go with that choice. LCC will obviously smack you badly for luggage, etc, as another example.

Great video with useful information. I have used the national All Japan Rail Pass on all my trips. It has been a bargain, as on some trips I have gone from Aomori to Hiroshima, and many places in between. I have also used it for some buses and the Miyajima ferry, too. Though you can't ride the Nozomi super express, the Hikari express trains are almost as quick. I have not had a problem taking my super size luggage with me. Rail passes also cannot be matched for convenience; I even keep them as souvenirs. I have not tried any of the regional passes. Next trip, I hope to be able to use my pass for some of the sleeper trains; has anyone used it there?

@robertsneddon731
@robertsneddon731 Год назад
The national JR Pass can be used for the Sunrise Seto/Izumo overnight train between Izumo in southern Honshu or Takamatsu in Kyushu and Tokyo. There's one class of travel on the train where the pass covers the total cost of the trip, it's the "nobi-nobi" where you sleep on a platform bed in a sort-of dormitory car (I've used this options more than a dozen times on various trips to Japan). To travel in a sleeper room you'd need to pay extra but the JR pass will pay for some of the trip cost. Note that travel on the Sunrise train requires reservations, including the "free" nobi-nobi. You can't reserve tickets until you've exchanged the JR voucher for a pass in Japan and sometimes busy days are already sold out when you get to the ticket counter to book particular journeys (this has happened to me). As far as I know the Sunrise train is the only overnight train still running on the JR system. There are other overnight sleeper trains which are privately operated but they're not covered by the JR pass. They tend to be expensive tourist trains, some of them VERY expensive. The super-size luggage restriction on shinkansens is a new thing, recently introduced. The storage area at the end of the shinkansen cars behind the last row of seats was getting filled up with bags and suitcases at the start of the journey and late-boarders were blocking the aisles and door entrance areas with their own too-large luggage. Now all luggage has to fit in the overhead racks above the seats. Check the updated rules on this for more details.

I usually purchase through JR Rail website and usually get the green Railpass as I normally travel on the Shinkansen from my base city to cities throughout that area, Like from Tokyo, going to Aomori, Kanazawa, Matsumoto, Shizuoka and Kawaguchiko. Then from Osaka/Kyoto, I go to Kagashima, Hakata, Hiroshima and Himeji. So, having this Green pass allows for reserving the first class seat reservations, which are less crowded and much more comfortable than the regular class cars. Well worth the price difference!

Things have been updated, you can purchase from within Japan until 31 March 2024! Japanrailpass.net/exchange.html has a list of locations. Ordering online via a 3rd party delivery depends on them so I wouldn’t be able to answer that specific question. Ordering online via japanrailpass.net will get you a digital exchange voucher but it’s priced slightly more expensive and you can’t order it so in advance. Hi, my wife and I will be arriving in Osaka and will be in Japan for 10 days. 3-4 days in the Osaka, Kyoto area, then traveling to Hakone-Mt Fuji area then to Tokyo for the next 6-7 days. 2 7 Day JR passes cost roughly 400 bucks. In your opinion looking at our schedule do you think it's worth it? I thought about flying for roughly around 150-160 domestically to Haneda then taking the trains to get to Hakone, stay the night or two then head back via train to Tokyo. But I'm still not quite sure about the prices of individual trains. Appreciate the help if you reply! Edit: This is a trip in Mid Decemeber.

Hi Mr. Ninja Monkey! Enjoyed ur vlogs about JR Pass. We are going to Fukuoka on March 2023 but got confused whether to purchase Regional Pass or JR Pass. We have a ten-day itinerary and would like to reach Sapporo just to see the place and be back after a day visit, is it doable? If we go direct to Sapporo and go back to Fukuoka the next day, how much time will we consume? Please help us if the 10 day can do for us. We are open to your suggestions. Thank you very much and hope to hear ASAP!
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy Год назад
use Google Maps to figure out how long the trip will take, ultimatley Fukuoka is too far to make it for a day trip to Sapporo. JR pass covers the whole country whilst the regional pass only some regions within the country.
@redfish337
@redfish337 Год назад
Hakata airport is walkable from downtown Hakata. It's 2-3 km away from Hakata Station and of course there is a line going directly there. You take a 2 hour flight to Sapporo. The distance is about 1200 miles / 1800 km on the ground. I don't know where you're from, but think along the lines of London to Naples, or New York City to Miami. Fastest set of trains from Fukuoka to Sapporo is about 15 hours each way, if the itinerary is possible with JR pass. If you want to go as far as Osaka/Kyoto, consider one of the regional passes that covers this zone. They last about 7 days for 20000 yen. If you want to go beyond that, then the national pass starts to be more reasonable. If you just want to be in Kyuushuu region, get that pass or no pass. If you want to go to Sapporo and don't want to spend 2 full days on the train, fly.

The "90-day" visa means you get a stamp in your passport when you arrive in Japan entitling you to stay as a tourist for up to 90 days consecutively. It's the usual process for those people coming from countries where there is no need to get a specific visa before arriving in Japan. Check the Japan government website to see if the country you are a citizen of is one of those "visa-less" countries.

My first suggestion is that you don't worry about exactly what shinkansen you use as long as its available with JR pass. Firstly Fukuoka's Shinkansen station is "Hakata" and looking on most maps of JR route you're good to get from Hakata to Okayama. The Sanyo Shinkansen is served by the "Nozomi" trains that are slightly faster and are not included with JR pass, however Hikari and Kodama trains are. We got an Osaka/Tokyo trip next year. What JR pass is best for touring both cities?
@redfish337
@redfish337 Год назад
JR pass isn't for touring the cities. It does okay for each of those though, as they both have a JR loop line. You will probably still need to pay other companies for some travel within both cities. And will likely have to do it for most or all travel within any other cities you visit. What you're paying for with JR pass is getting from Tokyo TO Osaka (or vice versa) , and back. If you need to get there and back using shinkansen, then you get a 7 day pass. If you want to spend more than 7 days in the second region, then you probably don't get any pass at all. If you only take the shinkansen one way for whatever reason (eg, you fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka, or are willing to take a domestic flight one way, etc, etc), then you don't need any pass. If you are NOT going there AND back, then you probably need to add another REGION to make the 7 day pass worth it. If you are going there and back, and also want to go to an additional REGION, it may justify a 14 day pass. Note, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara. Kobe are all the same region. Himeji is too, though going there slightly tips the scale toward getting a pass.
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy Год назад
As mentioned by other viewers, If you are going to use it to travel to different cities long distance it might be worth it. However, best calculate it its worth it using a JR calculator.

As said, it's simple. Made sense for me to do it once when I was showing people around but I still wanted to do stuff on my own later. That said, they're not really designed for you. They're kind of supposed to rush you around long distances and you have to keep up a pretty good pace of going long distances to make the passes worth it. If you have 2 months, you might want to take your time in each place a bit more. If you're going some absurd number of places like 20-30 that should mean the actual distance between them is fairly small so it still might not justify itself. I would suspect that your ideal setup would be to plan around a single 3 week pass and supplement it with buses, flights, local trains or perhaps regional passes.

Most of the regional passes are very hard to make worth it- you really have to abuse them to their limit to save much money. My favorite regional pass is not actually mentioned here. It's the Setouchi pass (and similar Sanyo Sanin pass which is slightly more). This covers from Osaka to Hiroshima and... because of a fluke in jurisdiction, all the way to Fukuoka. If you don't need to see Tokyo this is a great pass as it's only 19000 yen for 7 days. Additionally, as it has access to Fukuoka, you have access to the most convenient to city center airport in the country if you want to visit another region or two. This can let you add in something like Sapporo + Okinawa relatively easily- or even Tokyo if you want. If you notice flights going into Osaka or Fukuoka being cheaper for you than Tokyo this is a good one to work with as a sort of pseudo-national pass.

I have a feeling I am going to waste money buying tickets and passes I don't need...I am hoping to get to Tokyo in Jan..And spend a few days there..(not sure how many yet maybe a week..maybe a little longer)..And would like to get about Tokyo using buses and rail.....I am also thinking if possible to take a trip out to Kyoto....I am thinking the JR Pass for the trip to Kyoto..and a Suica card for around Tokyo....But can the JR Pass be used in the same way as the Suica card?..So would i be wasting money getting the Suica card whe ni can use the JR Pass for the same types of travel within Tokyo?.....I know you can get refunded on the Suica card if you do not use the whole card before leaving ...though you pay a small charge...OR!...keep the card with what ever is left on it and use it again if I was to return to Tokyo on anotehr trip..provided it is within 10 years?.....As I may be only visiting Kyoto other than Tokyo would the JR Pass be to much?..or as i asked..could it be used instead of the Suica card...Or would it be best to have both crads just in case?...Thing is I'd hate to spend alot of money on Passes and cards to find I still have to pay for tickets as I'd never know whether I should or shouldn't have to pay for a journey... There is a very VERY slim chance I might want to get to Osaka as well....and even Hiroshima...But I doubt I will have time..What would be your advice?....Thank You

To be honest it's kinda painful stream of consciousness there... But since you seem like you need some help, I'll try to navigate. Firstly, I encourage everyone to get an IC card. 100% pass coverage is almost impossible and even if possible, would almost certainly be a waste of money- IC card can cover any holes. If you'll be starting in Tokyo, I recommend a PASMO instead of a SUICA, as it can be returned without any fee (If returned to a Tokyo region non-JR station... there's one of these at both Narita and Haneda). Secondly, if you do get a SUICA- the negative is pretty minor afterall, the 10 year limit doesn't matter- at least as long as the train companies are in business. If 10 years pass, the card becomes inactive. All that happens is you give the card to the station staff and they transfer the funds to a new card. So 10 year limit doesn't matter. If you want to take the shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto and then back to Tokyo, a 7-day JR pass may make sense. It might be more sensible to put Kyoto on one end or the other so you can just take a domestic flight one way. In this case a JR pass doesn't make sense. JR pass is not very useful in most of the cities. It'll serve you about 2 days of travel in Kyoto. It has massive blindspots. It's mostly a bus city overall and a daily bus pass is probably recommended. They used to be cheap but I think they've gone up. Osaka is literally a 30 minute train ride from Kyoto (on JR). You don't even have to change lodgings to go there, you just commute for a day or two. Hiroshima takes a bit more effort and if you decide you want to go there, it starts to lean a lot more toward getting a 7-day JR pass.

@@redfish337 Wow!...thank you very much for the detailed reply..One of the best..if not the best reply I've had regards info for travel cards...Most helpfull..Yes I am a worrier for sure, certainly a pessimist...I'm sure I will make mistakes..after all it will be my first time traveling anywhere alone since losing my partner to cancer. She took care of all such things as I am ..as you can see useless and just get myself all worked up....I am hoping to see my favourite band in concert in Tokyo...and while there..see something of the city and hopefully Kyoto if I can. Japan has become a real interest of mine since losing my partner. Watching the Japanese tv channel here in the UK..I find the country totally fascinating in all subjects...This will be a once in a lifetime trip I suspect..so don't want to mess it up and waste precious time there..I may not have anyone to share the experience and memories with..but it would be nice to know I have been there...Thank you again.

@@Bodneyblue My condolences. Japan is a great place to make mistakes. Petty crime is very minimal and even the roughest areas of Osaka aren't really that rough by international standards. In some places around the world you kind of need several sets of eyes and the wagons circled so to say to not get pickpocketed. You can wander about fairly easily without much concern for your safety in Japan. Obviously there are things like thefts and scams there just as everywhere else and violent crime isn't absolutely zero, but overall it's probably safer than where either of us is from and so even if you have some trouble you can get expect to get earnest help. What band do you hope to see? I love going to concerts in Japan, though haven't been since covid. Anyway, best of luck, and I hope you'll have a chance to go AND it won't be a once in a lifetime trip for you either. It really shouldn't have to be- it's really not that expensive if you're travelling solo. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi,im curious as i saw not inclusive of non reserved and reserved seats on nozomi train. does that means if i travel from osaka to tokyo,i cant have a seat?
@redfish337
@redfish337 Год назад
There are 3 shinkansen types between Osaka and Tokyo. Nozomi Hikari Kodama Nozomi is about 20-30 minutes faster than Hikari, and is not included with JR pass at all. It's really trying to get the businessman who may have to say go to Osaka in the morning and come back to Tokyo that very night back and forth as fast as possible. JR pass people are basically considered to be tourists on not so tight of a schedule so you get dumped onto the medium speed Hikari train. It's like an extra 20-30 minutes. It's not a big deal. Shinkansen ride is enjoyable in and of itself and is an attraction for tourists in and of itself.

@@redfish337 Thank you for the reply,so if i were to go for the jr national pass,i can get thru by hikari type?
@redfish337
@redfish337 Год назад
@@moonboy9294 If it makes sense for you to get a national pass, and you get one, then when you make a reservation with the staff for this route, they should give you a hikari train automatically. If you don't make a reservation and decide to try to find a seat in a non-reserved car, then you would want to take a hikari train. If you don't buy a JR pass and want to take this route, then you usually want to buy the ~500 yen (~3-4 USD) upgrade for a Nozomi. If you don't buy a JR pass and want to take this route and care more about price than time taken, there is a special deal on the kodama shinkansen train (the slowest on this route), called the platt kodama, that must be reserved in advance. This takes about an extra hour compared to hikari, but saves something like 4000 yen (~25-30 USD)

@@redfish337 Sounds like a good advice,thank you! My original route was from osaka-tokyo-nagoya-osaka. So i guess the national pass does benefit me. but if i buy on klook and in japan just make a reservation for this route. they would auto assign me for the hikari train?
