Japan's Emperor Akihito has declared his abdication in a historic ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
In his last public address as emperor, Akihito handed over the symbols of power and thanked the public for their support during his 30-year reign.
The 85-year-old was given permission to abdicate after saying he felt unable to fulfil his role because of his age and declining health.
He is the first Japanese monarch to stand down in more than 200 years.
Akihito will technically remain emperor until midnight.
His eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, will ascend the throne later on Wednesday. A new era - called Reiwa, meaning order and harmony - will begin in Japan's unique calendar.

@Rahel, this is my family Motherland. My mother was born/raised in Japan. It's the only culture I know. Japanese are too humble/modest to be a proud people. Self deprecating people who never brag about their children. Japanese culture is unlike most. Very unique! :)

@@sonoftheway3528 no! emperor was considered descendant of god and his words were laws. All man swear oath not to japanese constitution or nation but to him the emperor. Its all cover up to spare emperor of his sins. He can stop war(like he did later on after realizing his foolishness caused millions dead) or even prevent it but he tolerated it. Just because its not his idea to attack pearl harbor doesnt mean he is not accountable. He allowed it. No generals will proceed without his blessing and he can hang anybody who disobeyed.

Not really. A japanese princess had to give up her title to marry a common man. However the uk had one of our princes marry common women and they kept their royal status. Also in uk monarchy a new rule has passed meaning sucsession of the throne wont skip girls, princess chartlotte is ahead of her younger brother Prince louis, the first princess in uk history to keep her place in line to the throne after another princr has been born

chelsea greer Exactly. Three princess have/will give up their titles to marry commoners. Emperor Akihito’s daughter, recently his niece, and soon his eldest grand daughter. Japan was all for changing the line of succession so that the new emperor Naruhito’s daughter could rule, but a male cousin was born so they stopped the change.

I like how Japan, a deeply conservative society, to which there was a lot of apprehension over how they would accept a potential abdication, actually ended up welcoming it with warmth. As one of the well-wishers talked about, it was a good thing all around because no one had died. The previous Emperor was simply retiring. Everyone, therefore, could fully enjoy the exitement of the start of a new reign without being conflicted with the grief following the death of the previous monarch.

As in Japan, there is no real tradition of abdication in the UK. The reigning Monarch is usually there for life. Our last two abdications in 1936 and 1688 were not particularly salubrious transitions, riven with scandal, political intrigue, religious intolerance and armed insurrection respectively. The act of abdication is therefore somewhat tainted, and considered only as a last resort.

I`m surprised that a primary school boy said,"Heisei Period is ending because I was born in that era, but I feel excited about the new era." It seems to me that he is just like an old man who went though a long years to date. But my 15 years old son also shares with his idea. This is different from the European Monarchy. The Japanese emperor represents the soul of japan, not Royal Power or political influence. He is a symbol of the unity of the Japanese people,. A completely different culture and philosophy from the European model. I agree with you in many ways, but having lived in Japan for 20 years, I understand (a little) of the Shinto ceremonies he is required to complete to protect the spiritual purity of the Japanese soul. Tradition,history and a homogenous people have created a unique paradigm.

I hope this new Imperial era, along with peace and prosperity will bring equality for all and will accept female heiress (and their descendants through female line) to the Imperial throne. Japan has had 8 Regining(/ruling) Emperess. It is little late to modernise from male preference primogeniture to absolute primogeniture.
