Whether you choose to view him as a left-handed Nolan Ryan before Nolan Ryan, or a glimpse into what Sandy Koufax's career could have been without arm injury... Neither seem to quite do Masaichi Kaneda justice, because he deserved to be a household name in Major Leage Baseball in his own right. He stayed home - and that's okay, but, perhaps you've missed his story because of it.
Relevant Players: Masaichi Kaneda, Nolan Ryan, Mickey Mantle, Sadaharu Oh, Bob Feller, Masanori Murakami, Hideo Nomo, Victor Starffin, Eiji Sawamura, Kazuhisa Inao, Sandy Koufax, Warren Spahn, Al Kaline, Bob Scheffing
Shoutout to @Cam23 for his valuable input!

#30 on the Dodgers is Maury Wills, which actually is listed on Baseball-Reference on 1965 Los Angeles Dodgers uniform number page.

Thanks. Glad it was an everyday player who made me look like a jackass. 😂

@@Hatbilly No worries. I actually went the long way in finding this out, using Retrosheet to find Murakami's strikeouts that year. For anyone who cares, that footage was from August 21, 1965, Murakami struck out Wills with the bases empty to end the top of the 7th inning. Murakami was removed for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the inning and the Dodgers won the game 6-4 in 11 innings. The Dodgers moved 1/2 a game in front of the Milwaukee Braves with the win, while the Giants, in third place, dropped to 1 1/2 back.

@big8dog887 Thanks for clarifying that. This video took a lot of time to make, going down the Japanese RU-vid wormhole to find the footage. The small details may not have been as ironed out. I guess the guys who make good money doing this can keep an editor around. Keep me straight!

Another Hatbilly gem. I've never heard of Kaneda before, but don't know very much about NPB. I recently watched ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xbSWjb3tlJg.html on Baseball Doesn't Exist. It was a thoroughly enjoyable dive into Japanese baseball and the culture around it. Reminds me of the Tom Selleck film, Mr Baseball, for some reason. I thought Magnum PI as an American baseball player who travels to Japan and finds his love for the game again was pretty good, but I was a teenager at the time.

I really appreciate it! I watched that the other day, too. All the respect in the world for Joey, because digging up an hour's worth of Japanese baseball footage is super time consuming. For this one, I had to run so many things through a translator program just to find footage, I'm sure he did, too. I haven't seen Mr Baseball in forever! I may fire that one up tonight.

Grumpy Scheffing's biggest mistake wasn't trading Nolan Ryan, it was trading Nolan Ryan for friggin Jim Fregosi Ps..Maury Wills wore #30

Murakami's strikeout of Maury Wills ended the top of the 7th inning at Candlestick Park on August 21, 1965. Murakami faced just two batters, striking out Bob Miller before facing Wills. He also got the last 2 outs the next day to get the save in the game that featured Juan Marichal using John Roseboro's head for batting practice.

Thanks for the context! Missed opportunity on my shot to mention the brawl. I'll get it next time I cover the Giants.

This was another awesome story. Thanks for spotlighting Masaichi Kaneda's baseball life. Seems like he had a great one.

Nice work here. If you want to do more players from foreign leagues, particularly NPB and Castro-era Cuba, I'm here for it. When you said Kaneda holds the NPB record for homers by a pitcher, I naturally had to look up Shohei Ohtani's NPB stats. He hit a total of 48 HRs over there, but, of course, not all of them was as a pitcher.

The only bio on Kaneda published in English was written several years ago, before Ohtani took over. I didn't think to double check that.

@@Hatbilly Well, like I said, my guess is that Ohtani probably didn't hit more than half of his home runs as pitcher, so the record probably still stands, no harm, no foul.

Japanese pitchers were known to destroy their arm and the ace was expected to be ready any time anywhere Think inao or sugiura for example But kaneda insisted on at least 3 days rest, normally no japanese team would tolerate this but they excused him as he was korean, he got to dictate his terms
@Hatbilly

Interesting. Do you know if this changed when he became a naturalized citizen?

@@Hatbilly it was always well known he is zainichi korean and he was always a fiery person, even as a manager he was fiery So I'm told people still said its because of his korean blood I have a few of his cards btw Back in those days, a few japanese managers and players would get life bans if it was mlb, it was not unknown for managers and players to attack umpires
