Follow the chilling Japanese tale of Oiwa, a ghost seeking revenge after her husband poisoned her and killed her father.
--
Oiwa’s only hope for ending her marriage to the cruel and dishonorable samurai, Iemon, was her father. But after he tried to end the union, Iemon murdered him in cold blood. With plans to marry another, Iemon conspired to poison his wife and left her for dead. But unfortunately for Iemon, it wouldn’t be the last of Oiwa. Kit Brooks shares the chilling tale of Oiwa’s ghostly revenge.

This story could have been solved with the husband simply agreeing to leave his first wife 😂
@ximec.r.2643

But the man was prideful, he didn't want to be known as someone horrible enough his wife left him (at the time divorce was a stigma and only someone desperate enough would rather be a pariah to endure constant abuse). But yeah, they both hated each other.

So one thing not mentioned here is that some versions of the play depicted a small and tragic romance between Oiwa and Kohei (the servant) In these versions, Kohei was always trying to help Oiwa as much as possible, but as a servant, he had no power to go against Iemon. The only thing he could do was stay with Oiwa and try to comfort her. He was always by her side even when the poison disfigured her and he never flinched at her gruesome appearance. When she dies, the play usually has Kohei try to fight Iemon in order to take revenge for Oiwa rather than being silenced, and that's how he dies. Them being tied to both sides of the door, being seen side by side on the fishing line and exacting revenge in tandem also carried over as symbolism for how Kohei continued to follow after Oiwa and help her in the afterlife.

Oiwa's story is one of betrayal, murder, and vengeful spirits. Oiwa's enduring spirit seeks retribution for the injustice done to her and her father. This eerie narrative has captivated audiences for generations, making it a significant part of Japanese folklore and theater. Kit Brooks' retelling of Oiwa's ghostly revenge highlights the enduring power of this haunting story.👿👻
