I just came back from Japan from 3/25-4/1 and it was really busy compared to when Japan first opened the borders in October of 2022. It took around 40 minutes to get through customs and immigration compared to ~10 minutes in october. There was a lot of foreign tour groups with the majority of them being Chinese and European.

Would've loved to have some of these things implemented earlier haha. We got an exchange order for JR passes for two people and forgot one at home when arriving in early March 2023, so we had to buy a new one in Japan (since there was no way to access our purchases digitally) and refund the other one once back home - lost out on the fee which was around $110 AUD. Then my card just stopped working, each time I put it in the card reader it would say to see a staff member for assistance. Fortunately I could just show it to a person at the staff gate nearby and they'd let me through, but keep in mind this may happen and try to keep your cards in good condition to make it easier for the machine to properly read it. I didn't mind showing it to the person at all but it did make us miss a few trains due to the short wait and being unable to use the ticket gates. Not that my card was in awful condition or anything though, it just...glitched out. The paper cards they give are really easy to bend so if they had just laminated it that might make it easier to prevent bending/damaging the card with all the times you have to pull it out and put it back.
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy Год назад
Yes those cards are easily lost and very flimsy! I’m sorry you had to experience that

🍣Thanks for this video! I would have been confused by the question of outside or inside eating! Quick question please - I used an online calculator to plan out (most) of my train trips and since I will be there for a little over three weeks it seems that the JR pass would be more expensive. Do you suggest it anyway for convenience or is it possible I will ride the train much more than I plan to? Thanks for a great video!
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy Год назад
It depends on your itinerary, Usually if travelling between more than 3 or 4 shinkansen trips its cheaper. Depending on how much more expensive it is, you also need to factor in that seat reservations are free with the JR pass and it will give you the flexibility to change your planned departure time. and the JR lines for example in Tokyo can also be used.

The advanced registration for the tax-free QR code is a game changer. There were a few times I missed out on purchases because I forgot my passport.Don't need to worry about that anymore. Ironically, retailers are essentially doing the same thing by inputtung your passport information into a computer that generates a q r code to scan before they start ringing you up. This will definitely save time for the worker and speed up the checkout process.

@@TC-cd5sm Many don’t, but they should be. If you happened to get stopped by a police officer and you don’t have your passport on you, it could become a bad situation since you’re legally required to always carry it on your body in the first place.

They would like to stay where the action is (arcades, shopping, food, neon lights, etc.)- however I don't want to stay in an area where there is a lot of "adult" entertainment /red light typr district at night for obvious reasons. Also, I would like a safe area for them to explore and be able to go out in the evening. What would be your recommendation? Shinjuko? Shibuya? Well, all are sort of good news. The one I like best is new JR pass format and use. In past the booklet although great, was a bit of a pain if you really made use of pass as it didn't have a lot of room for the required stamps. New card should be better over all with stamps no longer needed. Since I usually reserved seats shouldn't change much on luggage front. 🍣 I still see a hot dog in a bun.

Hello I’m in Japan tokyo and did some shopping at Don Quito tax free store, I think I’ll rather pay tax items, as now I realised…. I have to go through customs and it has to be on my carry on baggage ? Which may not even fit? Do you know if it is difficult? And I have to get every item out for them to check ???
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy Год назад
Hi, Generally, the purchaser of the tax-free items must carry them when leaving Japan I always do, and Ive never had them checked. Ive read that If you plan to put your duty-free items in your checked baggage, you can inform the airline staff at the check-in counter before checking in your luggage and a customs officer will come to the check-in counter to check your duty-free items. However I have not tried this myself

Hi Nathan, I don't understand really well how it works, the new consumption tax, apart from the normal tax, do you have to pay an extra fee if you take your food or drink inside and instead if you take away you don't have to pay it? Thank you so much for your work.
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy Год назад
Yea pretty much.. you don’t have to worry. If consuming indoors they will simply add the tax to your bill

You mentioned that the RTPCR test will not be necessary from the 8th of May. It has not yet been updated on the Japanese website for travel. It states that you need one. Kindly advise where this information is available? Thx

Hopefully this official info will put you at ease: www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/covid-19/bordercontrol.html .. I am aware that the Visit Japan web has not been updated. I'm expecting this to happen soon. I suggest that you try to clarify how to proceed directly with them, alternatively if you already have the documentation (3x vaccine certificate) then you just fill up as normal and see what happens. Or, perhapse wait until another week or so to see if its updated.

Thank you for your video. I was wondering - you say you visit Japan multiple times a year. Do you always get the JR Pass, or do you sometimes rent a car? If so, what's what like?
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy Год назад
I usually use the jr pass when travelling extensively, some of my trips are only Tokyo based so no need for a pass.. I’ve never driven in japan but now that I’m starting to exhaust rail travel I might need to give it a go!

@thecleeze6359 Год назад
@@NinjaMonkeyguy Thank you for your reply. Yeah, I've been living here for about a year, and with a residence visa I don't have access to the JR Pass, but there was a JR East Pass, but I heard that was a pandemic era incentive and it's going away... sorry for being long winded, but I think I'm starting to exhaust my rail travel options too, so I think I understand what you mean. I'm looking into driving. I might be here a couple more years, so think of me as a resource too. If I figure the whole driving thing out, I might be able to help you travel and see some cool things in the future, which I'd be happy to do if I can. Got a rigid work schedule, based on the school calendar. Happy to talk with you more if that sounds interesting.

Hey.... I am travelling from India and so far I have taken 2 doses and holding valid vaccination certificate but while submitting details in Japan web , we are asked to submit 3rd dose vaccine report as well for which I have not taken my 3rd dose.. So before departure do I have to still have to present negative PCR report? Also should I select as "not submitting" vaccine certificate while registering on Japan web... Please shed some information if possible

I know Jr pass is very convenient as I tried it for the first time in March but the downside is you are limit to your stay near the train station in order to be efficient and you need to travel light preferably just a carry on or a backpack. So I’m wondering has anyone tried the 7 days or 14 days rental car approach? And do you think this would be a good strategy?
@NinjaMonkeyguy
@NinjaMonkeyguy Год назад
Car rental can be a great option in the japanese inaka (countryside) however it will also slow down what you can see.. train travel will get you to long distances in a fraction of the time.

We are just back from 2 weeks in Japan (Tokyo, Kamakura, Hakone, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Kyoto, Osaka) all done using the JR Pass. We had large backpacks and small day sacks and the packs went on the overhead racks in the Shinkansen no problem. Only once was it so full we had to find a location elsewhere in the carriage to find space in the racks. Don't discount buses and trams in the cities if you can't/don't want to be near a station. This said, when travelling with bigger bags you should certainly avoid rush hour but we never had people get annoyed with us and we tried to be as accommodating as possible, including skipping fuller trams in some places (there's always another one along in 5 minutes). Having an IC card just makes it so easy although be aware that if arriving in one part of Japan and leaving in another you may not be able to get a refund on money on left on the card so best advice is to top up little and often. We had the Welcome Suica which is issued by JR East in Tokyo but couldn't be refunded by JR West in Osaka. I think it would be great to use a hire car to visit some of the more out of the way areas of Japan and if/when we do another trip I might consider it such as for getting to more inaccessible coastal areas. This said I'd avoid driving in the major cities if possible - so busy.

Night busses are usually cheaper as you would also save on accomodation costs, however you might want to use the JR pass and explore an area perhapse in the middle of your trip?

@@NinjaMonkeyguy okay, that makes sense, thank you so much!! So I should just use something like the suica card and load that up for most my traveling? Outside of regional JR passes, which, if my understanding of your video is correct, I can now purchase at any JR station?
