I wear arm warmers because my basement is cold and I have mild RSI issues
OBS apparently dropped a ton of frames, possibly because I accidentally used the logitech webcam software as my camera feed, will get this working right if I make another video!

Actually really interesting coming from someone who started with a different background prior to beginning AJATT and also had/has family responsibilities. Great update!

Always nice to see the journey of others. At that pace you will be at a pretty nice level in no time

Very nice progress, how to actually do the monolingual transition? Any tips?
@TurnedToast
@TurnedToast 3 года назад
Sorry it took me a bit to respond! What I did was grab the dictionary pack from the Moe Way found here: learnjapanese.moe/monolingual/ I picked 3 dictionaries that cover most things from the descriptions on that page and setup yomichan to show me them on top of jmdict. I also setup a second yomichan profile that only pops up if I scan inside another yomichan popup, and that one shows English on top to speed up dictionary reading Regardless of the setup, it's just a matter of reading the dictionary enough that you get used to it. There's only a few grammar structures used in dictionaries (90% of the time it's something like subject-verb-こと). If the Japanese definitions are clearly too hard I just skip to the English definition. As I said in the video it's not something I feel needs to be rushed at all.

Thanks for the video. Is the concrete noun deck custom or was it premade? Thanks
@TurnedToast
@TurnedToast 3 года назад
It's all words with context from something I was immersing in, just like the sentence cards. I just keep them separate because vocab cards have lower retention rates than sentence cards for me so I like to manage their settings separately! Tango N5/4 are my only premade decks, I've been 100% mining since then

So, this video is 6 months old. How's your progress now?
@TurnedToast
@TurnedToast 3 года назад
Decent, I had a bad time over the summer in terms of immersion time and plan on doing a "one year" video when I've actually had one year of active learning, so probably closer to December haha. Nothing too exciting though, I know more words, I can read a little easier, etc. Just improving day by day

@@TurnedToast thxs. I'm a little over 2 months. But barely have any time for active immersion due to work and other responsibilities, so it's good to hear progress from others in my same boat. I've definitely improved a lot, but I am definitely at a slower pace than most. Only learning 7 new words per day and active immersing from 1 to 2 hours split between mornings and lunch time at work.

I'm sorry, I must be hearing this incorrectly, did you say you learned 100-300 new kanji PER DAY for 9 days straight!??
@TurnedToast
@TurnedToast 3 года назад
Yes! but keep in mind I had done a chunk of them before so I was already familiar with the technique, and that RRTK isn't really learning kanji so much as quickly associating a keyword with a kanji. With actual Japanese learning 20 a day is my absolute limit
@sgsmdlgksmgosgop592
@sgsmdlgksmgosgop592 3 года назад
@@TurnedToast wow... how much were you actually spending on anki towards the end of the 9 days? Great video btw!
@TurnedToast
@TurnedToast 2 года назад
@@sgsmdlgksmgosgop592 It peaked around 5 hours, but within a week it fell to under a half-hour for kanji (and then gradually falling more and more until I deleted the deck 2 months later)

where can i get this rrtk 1000 common kanji deck?
@TurnedToast
@TurnedToast 3 года назад
Honestly not 100% where to get it right now. MIA was still a thing when I originally got all my beginner materials and beginner advice has been ever-changing. I'd recommend joining either the migaku or refold discords and following them to the best anki stuff to start with for Japanese

What was the light novel?
@TurnedToast
@TurnedToast 3 года назад
My first was おまえをオタクにしてやるから、俺をリア充にしてくれ! It's a relatively straightforward story and there's no tricky kanji usage or anything. As long as you're fine with typical anime tropes it's as good a book to start with as any

Sure! I edited this one down to two weeks to be an example. I'm sure there are better and more automatic templates out there since mine requires copying and pasting a new week every week lol docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vkVLjSXcfagfhYg9_z2oBqjmkOJwuKBfK5lPMcFp2lE/edit?usp=sharing
