7-Eleven just announced it will be upgrading its stores to their successful Japanese counterparts, but will Americans who like myself see 7-eleven as the perfect place to get bags of chips with flavors that get invented weekly really come here for noodles, salads and ramen?

From Japan. I’m a consultant and I was in 7eleven’s project before. 7-eleven employs a strategy called “dominant senryaku(dominant strategy) and opens up multiple stores in close proximity so that these shops can support each other while reducing the logistical costs. What I’m getting here is that since NYC shops are mass closing, 7-eleven has perfect breeding ground until they figure out how bad the crimes are, Japan is pretty safe place and we just don’t have a concept of “bad people doing bad things”
@poodlescone9700

Can you elaborate on how 7-11 gets around the problem of cannibalizing their sales with such close proximity of stores?
@hansheisenberg8737
@hansheisenberg8737 17 дней назад
@@poodlescone9700 frankly they don’t have secret sauce for that, but they locked in pretty well with guessing demand and localizing the stock with precision. However that might only work because we Japanese are pretty repetitive about our daily routine.

I’ve visited Japan many times and I often found myself enjoying meals at 7-11 (don't judge me! lol), especially their delicious onigiri. I would love to see more Japanese store items available in our stores. I admire the Japaneses respect for laws, their educational system, and the way they prioritize intelligence and common sense in their children’s upbringing. They know when it’s time for fun and games, and when it’s not, something that seems to have been forgotten by many parents in the United States. I’m also impressed by how clean their cities are. While I’m proud to be American and love our country, I wouldn’t hesitate to incorporate many aspects of Japanese culture into our own, given the chance.

The cleanliness of Tokyo blew us away. Especially considering there aren't trash cans anywhere except inside the gas station or store. I thought about it and wondered if our littering problem stems from the fact that we have trash cans all over to encourage discarding your personal trash in public as the social norm. Then eventually it evolved to just throwing trash anywhere. "Its someone's job to come clean the trash up" horrible attitude. My own sister litters like a trashy slob, it really irks me sometimes because she actually knows better.

7-Eleven is owned by Seven & I Holdings, a Japanese company. The transfer from being US-owned to Japan-owned happened in 1991 when the Japanese supermarket chain Ito-Yokado acquired a 70% stake in the Southland Corporation, the US-based operator of 7-Eleven. 7-Eleven has been under Japanese ownership for quite some time now.

We have a 7/11 here in Toronto in my neighbourhood at a very busy intersection where people go to just to go to. It’s always packed with people after school hours and it’s conveniently located. The neighbourhood is dotted with locally owned shops, convenience stores, and restaurants and ofc a few fast food restos but it still does very good. I think a logical choice would be to try it out in areas that are demographically similar to NYC but relatively safer. I think Toronto would be a good runner-up since we’re already very “travelled”. Lots of Asian branches that do well back home open up here.

Unless they can figure out how to get money out of your pocket before it walks out of the store, it will be a failure. If you lock up everything of value people will just stay away. I jumped on my computer after watching this just to make this comment. If you want to see what a Japanese 7-11 would look like in America...just look at the Hawaii 7-11's. The Hawaii 7-11's are actually operated by 7-11 Japan so we have more ready-to-consume items that are tailored to our tastes as a state. Now most mainland companies have adapted to what they serve here (McDonalds has a Spam, Eggs, and Rice platter so you can imagine they're pretty much required to have a rice cooker in house) I think the issue is trying to diversify what they sell in each state and, as others have pointed out, looting. Guarantee that if 7-11 is going to play it smart they will make-over a few stores as their test bed, gather the data, and then adapt. Also from a recent trip to California, man 7-11's on the mainland are actually ass.

Racetrac started adding on fresh prepared food to their locations. Recently we've seen Buc cees expanding in Florida, but that will only be a few. So, they wont really compete against the average neighborhood convenience store. 7-11 still has a strong presence in central Florida, but they've got allot of competition. I worked at a 7-11 for over a year while I was in college, got very lucky once. One night while I was working, the 7-11 closest to me, about a mile away, was held up by druggies and the clerk got offed. I knew the young guy, too, what a shame... My friends thought it was me that got offed when they heard about the offing in the news the next day. I thought long and hard about how that could have been me if those criminals had gone to my store instead... The store and building are long gone, but that memory remains... My store had some good sandwiches that were very popular, but for some reason, the chain doesn't offer that anymore. I used to eat them because I got them at half price... :) I don't know if the typical American consumer would embrace Japanese food. Time will tell.

Having owned a convenience store/gas station in the past, I can tell you that gasoline isn’t a big money maker. You can be making as little as 2 cents a gallon profit at times and the equipment is very expensive and must be maintained. Having gas on,y brings the customer in to your store to buy other items that are more profitable, and tobacco products are not the best when it comes to profits either. Drinks are the products that you make the most profit off of, especially fountain sodas. It has been several years since I owned a store, but back then we would have maybe 15 cents total in a large fountain drink that we would sell for 99 cents. And that included the cup and straw, which were nearly half of the 15 cents you had in the drink. That is why so many convenience stores have those big reusable plastic cups for sell that will allow you to get an extra large for the price of a large. They make a profit off of the original sale of the cup, and make even more money off of the refill. And bottled drinks of all sorts also make a good profit, most of the bottled sodas, juices, and teas are sold for twice as much as they cost . But when people are in a hurry, they are willing to pay $2.50 for a soda that they could get an entire 6 pk at the grocery store for little over twice the price. And again, it has been several years, but we would buy 16 oz Pepsi and Coke products for right at 50 cents a unit and sell them for 99 cents all day long. Plus beer and liquor made a lot of money too. As for food, things that you make from scratch makes the best profits. We had a BBQ pit as well as a deli case and would sell sides and other specials like soups and chili. We made a great profit on our pulled pork and ribs. But items that are prepackaged don’t make nearly the profit, those include things like chips, ice cream, candy, and snack cakes. I don’t think the kinds of foods that are sold in Japan will be that popular in the US, especially being sold at a convenience store. Pizza is probably the number one selling hot food item sold at convenience stores in this country, with various kinds of chicken or BBQ coming right behind pizza. Quirky Japanese food items would be a nice change for some, but most just won’t buy it on a regular basis. I doubt even the shoplifters wouldn’t take it.
@SuperFlashDriver

Yeah, even then gasoline stations would be later converted into 24/7 convenience stores instead of gas stations with a convenience store, thus some of the items there are a bit more pricey compared to grocery stores.
