@@TokyoLlama bright blue wall with what looked like thin metal reinforcements, in the background. It was up close so, I suppose it could have been anything. It's so hot in Vancouver, I have swimming pools and water on the brain. lol
"I like to point out these beer can are more than a week worth" We're not judging man, This has been a stressful year and a half, We all need to unwind at the end of the day!
I continue to be impressed with how handy you are, especially with tools you have never used before! That garbage bin looks really nice! You're whole kitchen looks nice, really.
Yes the Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics are so calming, definitely my favorites! It's interesting how they are so similar despite developing from so far away from one another.
I've fallen into the rabbit hole of camper vans and custom motor homes when I suddenly remembered your ongoing project. Why is home renovation so addicting?!
Moved into my first apartment a few years ago, and I moved out of a 4 person house to live with my bF. We moved into the place together, and we had a pantry, a lot of cupboards we thought we'd never fill. We thought we had ALL the space. We're buying new shelving units.
Wow! The kitchen looks amazing. Can I make some suggestions? Don’t make wooden inserts for your gomi box. Get some square or oblong plastic buckets that you can easily lift out because you will want to wash them with hot soapy water and disinfectant. Even some from Daiso would do for the time being. Particularly if any ants or other creepy crawlies find there way in. I agree with the plan to cover the kitchen bench top with the same top that’s on your kitchen island. You have two small boys who will put things on the bench without thinking, so an easy clean/care surface will take the stress out of worrying that the wood will become damaged. I’m thinking circles from the bottom of cups and glasses, maybe a hot teapot burn, a sticky peanut butter knife etc. Vegetable baskets - you could get some wire basket drawers and just make a front cover for each basket that matches the wood on the gomi box. You might have to thin it down so it’s not front heavy. I have no idea if the baskets are available here but have seen them used in wardrobe configurations at home. They also usually come on wheels. Different topic - have you thought about asking for sponsorship from your local DIY store or from wherever you bought your tools? Filming other people’s renovations is a great idea. I’ve actually recommended your channel to a number of my students, just told them to put the English subtitles on and enjoy.
Thanks very much, great suggestions. I’d really like stainless steel wire drawers, that’s what I had in mind. Seen them overseas on houzz and places like that but can’t find them in japan. IKEA has some chrome ones I think so it may work with a wood face.
@@TokyoLlama Potatoes need to be in darkness, otherwise, they turn green which makes them poisonous. Any basket will do to store them in, they don't need to be wire but a bit of air to circulate is good. The key is darkness. One thing that you could do is use a noren to cover the gap and provide some pattern as well as darkness. They can also be washed if they get dirty. Just a thought. Also, that idea of Aussie Girl in getting some rectangular plastic buckets for the gomi box is the best idea. If you get the buckets in different colours then the kids can see where to sort their rubbish.
Maybe. But just having a separate pantry means the food clutter will all stay in that cupboard, not in a passageway. Drawers in the kitchen for the dishes is a great safety measure for earthquakes, too.
Spaniard here. Always have loved traditional japanese style houses, I think you are doing an awesome job in balancing the original style with having all the amenities to feel at home. Keep it up!
Your home is like a massive art installation. The craftsmanship (yours included) is admirable! Have really enjoyed watching the progression of this project. Good luck with your upcoming projects to grow your channel! Sounds like some great content to watch for. Thanks!
Garden is a huge change from when you first showed the house! The kitchen is great and the area by the window looks lovely. Always bowled over by what a great house this is and by your careful custodianship of it. Not to mention the hard work you have brought to reviving it.
that lime plaster really brightens up the whole house! i love how you are leaving a lot of wood exposed to show the interior supports and structure of the building :D
I am now certain that the previous owners are looking on from the afterlife and putting many blessings down on you for the hard work you are putting into their home.
"When are you going to finish here!?" Oh man, so many husbands know that question AND that tone of voice. You've done so much; dare I say you are heading down the final stretch?! Excellent work.
My favorite youtuber is back! Thank you for the update on your home and that you have visited other people who are renovating in your area as well. That should be very interesting, as well as the building of the temple. Hope all is well with you and your family.
As much as I wanna see how the house looks, every week. There’s just something regal about seeing “the big finish”,when EVERYTHING is completed!lol He’s so inspirational, for home owners.
You've done a great job and as for the tools, your wife should be proud! Not only have you saved money, you've finished everything to a very professional standard!
I have loved watching your videos, I've missed seeing the Japanese architecture (we did a 3 year duty in Okinawa) I'm hand sewing my own Japanese style apron and this is perfect to watch while sewing. Thanks for the update today!!
that pocket jig really is a lifesaver. great progress. the tools are also, wonderful investments as you'll be using them for years to come for other projects I'm sure. once you become accustomed to making things yourself. it's hard to go back to buying overpriced things. but wood is ever costly. finding a place near you that sells reclaimed wood is a godsend.
Another Great video!👍 I actually met the inventor of the Kreg Jig (pocket screw jig)! I worked at a specialty wood shop when they were just starting out and making their rounds promoting them. I remember being very impressed by the sales demonstration. Also, remember that your pets are a part of the family ❤️ their scratching posts are necessary and I don’t think they’re ugly at all! It shows you love your cat/cats and consider they’re needs over esthetics.
You can never have too many tools, you never know what wants "fixed" or "improved" The work is coming along looking forward to the reveal, and the other new videos.
Great timing! We’re just about to start work on our own kitchen, so it’s interesting for me to see the similarities and differences in our design and construction choices. (I’m another foreign resident building a home in Japan. Would love to do a collaboration video with you sometime…except that we a bit far apart so it could be tricky. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration as usual!)
Getting ever closer to "finishing," I never cease to be amazed at how far you've come. The level of craftsmanship, and attention to detail, is truly astonishing! One thing I can never get over is the exquisite wood you have available to work with!
LOVE your pantry! Looking at your kitty litter boxes, I was wondering, might you devise an ingenious way of concealing them, as you did with the kitchen trash receptacle?
"I swear, honey. Buying these tools will save us money in the long run. I can do pretty much all we ever need on my own then! Think about the money a contractor would want." *skeptical stare* "Whatever." Truly a man after my own heart. Edit: "When are you going to finish here (with all these tools you bought)?" "Soon." (of doom) Had me laughing in tears
Even through the video, you can feel the spirit of the house. Lime plaster is a natural antibacterial. It's good to feel joy in other people's joy. Great work.
I love this house so much. I hope there are many others who are rehoming and rehabilitating these pieces of historical architecture. It is a dream of mine now to purchase one of these and fix them up for a vacation home I can rent out to foreigners during the months I'm not living there. Good job, Dad!
very excited to learn that the channel will continue once the house is complete !!! everything you alluded to about your future activities with it sound wonderful.
I have recently discovered your channel, and have already binged all the episodes. As a Canadian living in Japan, all the information you are providing is of great interest! I especially like the idea of your series on different people doing basically the same thing but in different ways/means. That sounds great.
I just love the care and respect that you and the others show for their tools and the process. It’s the embodiment of Japanese philosophy toward life…beautiful!
From the 1st video... Big old house with stunning structure but whole mess and step by step- video by video, the house is getting more and more beautiful. I admire every each video taken.
You should be very proud of yourself. You have accomplished so much and a lot of it you did yourself, so that must be so much more rewarding. I hope you and your family get to enjoy your home for a very, very long time. God bless you and your family!
SO awesome to hear some of my music in a series I've enjoyed so much! 🤯 Thank you so much for including it. Another great episode and looking forward to the next one!
You're house becomes more and more stunning with every video you post. I could see a sort of shelving unit with pull out drawers for that area next to the garbage bin.
From the USA here, started watching because I have friends & co-workers in Japan and I move expats around the globe. Really like your channel and have enjoyed watching your journey with your home. Your craftsmanship is great, as is your attention to detail, but I commiserate with your wife's question at the end! :D
If you ever need a chill video in between - I would love to see your cats enjoying the house. Laying in the sun, enjoying balancing over the beams (already spotted a red tail
Your DIY skills have grown tremendously over the course of this renovation project. Count me impressed! So happy for the update. Looking forward to future vids!
I have been watching since your second video and I am so thrilled with how much you've accomplished! As a wife, I understand the weighing on the need for so many tool. But as a daughter of a carpenter, those tools can make a difference in how many projects you can do and do well.
Absolutely beautiful. You did an incredible job. And thank you for showing us your house renovation stage by stage. It has become one of my most favorite series on RU-vid :) And that garbage bin is fabulous!!
I love watching your videos and your progress. Its like watching an HGTV show without commercials and all the fake drama. Your voice is super soothing and the way you edit the vids and add music is awesome! Always happy to see you post. Your kitchen is looking beautiful!
Finally caught up on all your house updates!! Wow, being here since Renov #3 and seeing all your hard work coming to place really well makes me a proud subscriber 🤧 Also, I see you've improved on your humor 😆 I've been watching your videos with my Dad and he can agree that having all those tools can not only save on labor expenses but you can also make your own custom wooden stuff :) Looking forward to a full house tour in the future! :D
Wow the chance to really learn the culture and history and even learn from the original carpenter as well as see him buiild a temple. what you are doing is keeping traditions alive. Thank you!
Ooh its exciting that you'll be showing other renovations in japan! I was wondering what you would do once your house is completed. :) I can't wait to see all the other projects
I am always amazed by the progress you are making. It looks like it was done by a professional. By the time you finish your house you will have the skills to hire out and help others! Beautiful job
I agree with putting in the corinthian countertops, for me, it's for practical and esthetic reasons. I would also look into a pop-up electrical hub...it would pop-up through the countertop when you needed it and most include USB ports with the outlets. I think you can get them with 4 or 6 plug-ins. Love the kitchen, totally worth the wait to see.
Thanks, I was considering the pop up hub but though the post would make a neater solution, just wish I'd got more than the two outlets. The electrician is coming again soon so will ask him if we can get more there.
For your waste sorting bin, if you find it often being pushed too far under the counter, add a small furring strip to the underside of the counter so when you push the bin into place, the back of the handle hits the strip when the bin's face is where you want it to normally be. It's a quick and cheap fix that will keep you from having to readjust the bin when you're walk past it lol Still loving your house and the work you've put into it really shows!
That kitchen is looking fantastic! Don't get trapped by the idea of that top shelf in the pantry - get it done! (This coming from a guy who has been meaning to paint a single piece of wood for a year).
SOON is the watchword!🤣😂 Love the way the shadows play on the lime plaster walls, beautiful aesthetic of the old style house. You have saved a gem. Thank you for sharing. Blessings Abound.
i am really impress, my husband not even like take out the trash of the house lol. Beautiful teamwork. Beautiful house, I'm enjoying watching each of the chapters so far.
I love this old style of cupboards that has sliding doors. It reminded me of my grandparents' old wooden house in HK before it was demolished.... Lots of beautiful wooden furnitures.
When you glue and clamp the boards together to make a wider board, you should alternately put the clamps on either side of the assembly, first top, then bottom, then top, etc. This way the boards can not bow in either direction when drying. The house looks so beautiful, you are so lucky to have the resources to undertake such a project. Your work really pays off.
To be completely honest here i watch your channel for a few reasons, 1) your craftsmanship is amazing. 2) Japanese items in your home for my future house (i.e. The sink you showed) 3) i love watching a house become a home.
I love the idea of expanding the channel to related topics & covering similar renovations by others! Looking forward to where you & the channel go from here :)
