The ship in the photo, taken September 4,1945, is the Japanese destroyer Momi. Short-lived, it was completed in September 1944 and sunk by aircraft on January 5,1945, with the loss of all hands.

Quick question: You know your ships, and I'm no naval architect, but isn' that a rather antiquated design for a destroyer built in '44? Specifically the low gunwales on the aft two-thirds. Looks more like something from the '20s and '30s. Doesn't quite seem right.

@@CoronadoBruin I don’t know much about ship design. From what I’ve read Japanese destroyers were quite a bit longer than U.S. designs. Momi class destroyers were considered antiquated by the beginning of the war. They were mostly relegated to secondary roles. I’m going to have to recheck the launch date. I don’t know why they would build an old design in 1944. That doesn’t seem right.

@@CoronadoBruinOkay I checked. The Momi-class were an older class from the 1920s. The ship in the photo is named the Momi but is a Matsu-class built between 1943 and 1945. They were sometimes called destroyer escorts and were larger and more capable than U.S. destroyer escorts. They were preceded by Otori-class fast torpedo boats.

It’s fiction that Adm. Fletcher abandoned the men on Guadalcanal. In pre-invasion meetings Fletcher let it be known that 3 days were his max and Turner was well aware of that.

He was nervous about the location of the Japanese carriers! The main issue with the supply were the loading of the ships. It was done haphazardly without true planning. They needed fuel ammunition bull dozers first food and water. Nothing was load in order of needs. This was the first US amphibious landing of size and it was rushed.
