all great guitarists that would grace any band that could have them and the only argument to be had is the order, Kanami is my no1 not just for her ability but for her creative ability composing the songs with her band mates considering the talents involved it must be like herding cats. if we all agreed on the order and thought the same what a very boring uninspiring world this would be, keep up the good work Frank
Nice list, and picking a number 1 is very hard! For technical skill I'd go Miyako, for skill plus soul I'd go Hal-Ca, and as an all-round guitarist/songwriter I'd go Kanami. Saki is also a great option though. Would be good to also see a list that includes both genders, as there are some incredible Japanese male guitarists who sadly get less attention internationally. For example, Juko Suzuki is up there with the top guitarists in this list.
@@stevekane4922 That is news to me that they are friends. I have never seen them playing together on stage. I have seen Saki play with many others. I would like to see that happen.
@@kevinstreeter6943 I've never seen mincho play with anyone else except Herman li. (nobody else is good enough 🤣). But I hear she has jammed with Saki privately, but she's not really the jamming type of musician. She likes to have it all worked out before. She doesn't seem to use jamming to compose, writing her riffs in her head.
As a amature guitarist myself, my favourite is Kanami because she writes interesting music. Others: Hal ca for stage presence Misa from Old Bridear Miku from Band Maid, she is quite special in other ways.
If I ever stop listening to LOVEBITES then I'll actually have time to check these other bands out. Ofc I know Kanami and Saki but have not dived into B-M nor Nemo's music catalog. One thing I learned from this that is amazing (to me anyways). Miyako, Kanami, and Saki are all the same age, that is cool as hell! Can you imagine the nightclub scene in Japan as these 3 were coming up through the ranks, OMFG. I would've gone to the clubs 7 nights/week to watch them. You couldn't pay me to do that here in the US. Great list Frank! 🐺🤘
Your list is very close to how I would rank my favorites. Here is my list - 10 Matsuri 9 Li-sa-X 8 Tomo-zo 7 Hazuki 6 Midori 5 Hal-Ca 4 Hana (she would also be top 5 if this was a Japanese female rock/metal drummer or vocalist list) 3 Kanami 2 Miyako 1 Saki
These girls can do whatever the other does at this skill level and each has videos to prove it. My "favorite" is a 4 way tie, Saki, Hal-ca, Kanami, and Miyako all for different play styles, looks, techniques... again very subjective. The sheer catalog of over 130 songs in every single style guitar technique there is from Kanami can't go unrecognized so a lot of people do put her at number one and there is nothing wrong with that. Cool video regardless and appreciate putting "favorite" and not "the best" to avoid the haters!
Since "from now on" came out kanami has risen into a different league - now you can only compare her to a few other guitarists globally, probably all guys. Mostly dead guys. None of them compose and produce for a whole band basically. She does everything on that track without ever being just a collage of bits. And the others work seamlessly into her textile. A masterpiece.
@@stevekane4922 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jJSAqc8d8eE.html Link to some of my work there. I sing and play every instrument on that track, as well as wrote, recorded and mixed it all myself. I like Kanami, but you are simping hard. She's not THAT good.

@@stevekane4922 Have a gander at some of the songs on my channel. I write, record, mix, sing and play all instruments. I'd challenge Kanami to be able to play some of my solos. I like her, but you are simping. She's not THAT good.
Saki is the ultimate shredder. The only reason I prefer Kanami is because of the music she makes. I may be biased but Kanami here she is the only genius.
Tomo-zo and Li-Sa-X would make my list if I were to make one. Also, one to keep an eye on is Riho Kohara from Raise A Suilen. I'm still learning about them and getting into to their music, but she's the standout member of that group for me.
Solid list...I'd add Tomo Zo, she's just incredible, and I really don't want to speculate where Hal Ca's arc will take her, she's such a force of nature already at such a young age.
I'm glad you titled this "favorite" instead of going down a "best" rabbit hole. The Japanese metal scene is incredible, and the fact that these ladies have totally broken the metal genre barriers and play just as good as their male counterparts. Miyako is my favorite, but in her case naming her my favorite goes beyond just guitar. She's a virtuoso at piano and a phenomenal composer on top of her elite level guitar playing. What distinguishes her from the rest to my ears is she is more experimental in her play with bends and tapping and playing with tones. You can't go wrong with any on this list.
Well said, and yes so refreshing to have a conversation about aesthetics and favorites, not some phony "best" talk. It's just remarkable how Japan has given birth to so many talented female rock and metal musicians. And to think that most of the music loving world is still completely in the dark about it.
@@drogonr9318 I blame the record labels and music industry in general. Oh yeah, and the fans that fall into the trap of following bands pushed down their throats. There is so much mediocre music out there, and bands that have been around for so long it makes me cringe.
Totally agree. "Favourites" lists are great: "Best" lists are nonsense. Nice selection of players here. Surprised to see Hazuki a bit lower than I'd expect, but then this ain't my list, lol. Actually, I don't think I could pick favourites in order but if I tried then the list would contain Li-Sa-X, Hazuki, Saki and Yuki somewhere in it. Japan is giving us a whole heap of killer rock music. Domo arigato, Nihon!
Very solid list. I was pleasantly surprised to see Ayumi on your favorites list. I have really grown to love her style. There are just too many amazing guitarists to fit them all in the top 10. Your top 2 are the same as mine but the order depends on who I am listening to at that moment. Haha.
Thanks! yeah was pretty difficult to make just a top 10 list and not a top 15 or 20 but since this is my first chart didn't want to make it too long... ahah will do other charts in the future! 🤟
What's most important in defining a lead guitarist: Speed shredding and jamming... or overall composition and execution, riff production, and exciting, tasteful solos that best service the song? For me, the answer is crystal clear.
@@cepho8349 That's usually true. But I get glassy-eyed and mind-numbed much quicker even with tasty shredders like a Satriani or a Vai, etc. Guitarists going back to a Harrison or Vaughan, etc.... and more contemporary, Kanami Tono, who all really service the song, (and in the case ot Kanami, write the songs!) keep me engaged much longer and garner my respect on a higher level. Thx, Cepho!
It's totally unreal how there are so many awesome women guitar players in Japan. Narumi from Lonesome Blue deserves mention, but Haruka is my favorite. Her technical skill is astonishing, and her song-writing is unbelievably strong for someone so young. Her sense of melody and undeniable stage presence makes her the complete package. Happy birthday Haruka! Thanks Frank.
Great list! I'd have a difficult time arguing with your picks. I "might" have put Tomo-Zo from Gacharic Spin in there somewhere, but all in all I really like all your picks.
Some news about the guitarists from the list: BURRN's ranking 2022: 7 - Saki, 17 - Miyako. ru-vid.comfLn_nr4jj6Q Yashiro not only plays electric guitar, she also plays acoustic guitar concerts in the trio ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N-I1VXQu1d4.html. She also announced her participation in the progressive scene at Silver Elephant (May). It's not an easy live session (Saki has been playing there for a long time (again in April). And outside the lists. Sally (Lipstick) started her own channel and plays covers. She seems to be a very skilled guitarist. She also collaborates with Ichinose (b), who was competing to be the bass player for Lovebites. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GDplwaId29U.html
Not a bad list. Narumi and Tomo-zo really should be in a list like this, I think. My list would go something like: 1. Hal-Ca 2. Narumi 3. Saki 4. Miyako 5. Hazuki 6. Tomo-zo 7. Kanami 8. Midori 9. Keiko 10. Rie a.k.a. Suzaku
My 10 favorites are : Miyako (Lovebites) Midori (Lovebites) Yuki (D-Drive) Hal-ca (Asterism) Tomo-zo (Gacharic Spin) Narumi (Lonesome Blue) Rie A.K.A. Suzaku (Muses) Hazuki (Nemophila) Saki (Nemophila) Kanami (Band-Maid) Choosing 10 is not easy, there is a lot of quality in Japan. My favorite is Miyako.
Tomo-zo from Gacharic Spin is my personal favourite! She's a bit of a dark horse because she's a team player who has to compete with busy keys, bass and vocal arrangements in their music, so a little more attention is sometimes needed to spot everything she's doing. But once you get into what she's doing she's just incredible, navigates countless styles, has touch and taste, creativity, fun, and a great shredder as well (not that that is by any means the focus of Gacharic Spin's music).
@@L.A55 These girls can do whatever the other does at this skill level and each has videos to prove it. Telling thing about kanami is that there are no RU-vid home videos out there and the self covers are chosen as instructional tools - not shred shows. So mincho
Saki is definitely my number 1! The only thing I disagree is I would add Yuki from D_Drive. As high as #2 because, and this is my opinion, Yuki has the technical prowess of Steve Vai and the emotional feel of Stevie Ray Vaughan. I think the emotion is from learning guitar at 18 as therapy to help her depression after having to stop her passion of ballet because they thought she was too fat (Wow!). Now I'm not making any declaration like she's better than them or anything like that. I'm saying that's what I personally get when I hear/watch her play, and those 2 Steves have been my top favorites for 30+ years so that's high praise from me.
@@DRESSMAKER20X thanks man. I actually found it out during the weekend. I learned they did 7 instrumental tracks for the blu ray that originally had lyrics. Givonnani is basically described as a Kanami solo the whole song. I fell kinda bad for Miku and Saiki as I read lots of fans prefer the instruments to the original with the vocals. It is true though while Kanami is frantically playing her notes during the chorus Saiki's vocals kinda overpowers her playing so it's hard to hear it
Does anyone know this solos?: from 6; 08 (solo from the fair?), (from 1; 43 solo with Marienette from the concert as a support for DragonForce). Video after pasting the titles into the Google browser: 日本 Mary's Blood血腥玛丽 乐队 最美 吉他手 Saki 逐针精剪大合集 The one from the exhibition is impressive. The problem with Saki is that not many people know her work well, and there are not many of Saki's amazing performances on RU-vid. People know her from Nemophila and a bit from Mary's Blood. She also played a lot of different music at concerts that did not go online (e.g. performance at ProgTokyo Festival Silver Elephant). Saki for me is #1.
Hi!, the bands this guitarists are from are: Mary's blood, Aldious, Bridear, Hanabie, Nemophila, Lisa x Band, Lovebites, Asterism, and band maid. Pretty easy to find just look the names on youtube. (i prefer to not write their bands on video description to not spoil the list)
Thanks you appreciate it! only reacted to Tomo-zo once so i don't know here playing style well yet, and never listened to Lisa x... maybe will add them in a future chart! 🤟
It was a tough decision for me not to put tomozo in my top10. speaking of lisa-x, she is an amazing guitarist, technically one of the best female guitarists in Japan, but she needs to create more her own stuffs to prove that she is not just technically good, i think she has a long way to go, after all, she is still very young.
Midori and Saki are similar to me, Hazuki is my favorite guitar player from NEMOPHILA, you forgot Lisa-X or just is not your taste at all? Yuki from D_Drive too. Is terms of composition Kanami and Miyako are leagues above of the rest of the list IMO.
100% agree on everything except the last one. Someone who composed most of Mary's Blood's repertoire (especially the older one), songs like Counter Strike, Marionette, Wings, Bite The Bullet, Veronica, I'm Dead, Bloody Birth Day, Coronation Day, Campanulla, Arcadia,... for sure Saki is a Myako/Kanami-level composer. The amazing thing is that three of them play amazingly, compose extraordinary things, are beautiful themselves and have (probably?) the same age.
Another one of these lists that fail to mention Miki Igarashi the godmother of female Japanese female rock guitarists it’s almost like they have an age limit
I only discovered Boris tonight. Yes, Wata is a goddess! I just watched Wata's episode of "Board to Death" on the EarthQuakerDevices yt channel where she explains her sound board and equipment. The worst part is they played here in Sydney 2 months ago!! They are touring the US later this year.
Funny you should mention these names. Li-sa-X, mentioned but not listed here, is mentored by Friedman and Gilbert, but also has played with Polyphia as a guest.
No other female guitarist can play solo or duel, but no other female guitarist can play in tight synchronized unison or harmony for more than 30~90 seconds as well as MIYAKO & MIDORI of LOVEBITES. I can't find any other songs that incorporate tight synchronized unison or harmony for more than 30~90 seconds playing except for LOVEBITES.
@@CrYou575 The two guitarists are not only talented, but also play different types of music, which synchronizes their guitar playing in their solo performances and creates a continuous, non-monotonous guitar performance between them. Their guts and determination to not be afraid of failure in their twin shredders during live performances is based on their trust in each other. Of course, this is backed by Haruna's tireless, fast, and precise drumming and the long hours of stoic practice by all members.
A 10 way tie. But, alas, I must choose the strongest guitarist. If I don't chose Midori, she can beat me up. Dang! She's ripped. So best female Japanese guitarist goes to Midori.
That makes no sense as there are many female guitarists from Japan that are much older than Kanami. Also she is hardly the only overall musician on the list. Miyako just released her first solo album. A piano album btw.
If someone would have told me 5 years ago that one day I will argue in RU-vid with freaks from all over the world who is the best guitarist. And all of them are women and from Japan. I would have declared him crazy. How lucky we are, people, that they all exist - the order is for everyone to decide for themselves: TOP japanese female Guitarslingers : 01. Miyako Watanabe - JP heavy metal band LOVEBITES 01. Saki - JP heavy metal band NEMOPHILA 01. Midori Tatematsu - JP heavy metal band LOVEBITES 01. Hazuki - JP heavy metal band NEMOPHILA 05. I really disagree the best guitar riffs are not in any band maid or nemophilia song, if they don't distinguish it they are not fit to make any list. Miyako #1...
And Mary's Blood? 70%? Saki's output is Mary's Blood. Perfect confirmation of the sentence I wrote in the post below: "The problem with Saki is that not many people know her work well,...".
Um parece q todos se copiaran este tipo de videos , yo no se como la guitarrista de band maid siempre la meten en estos tops , si no es la gran cagada como musico
I'm glad that Yashiro is on the list. She's probably the #1 underrated guitarist. Very fast, perfect and probably the best way to bring out delicate clean tones. With Saki, he creates a perfect duo, which is clearly visible in MB - Chateau de Sable. Unfortunately, RU-vid deletes posts with links from BiliBili.
