Learning Japanese, or any language for that matter is not inherently difficult. It just requires time and one to show up every day and remain disciplined with their study habits. At least that's what I keep telling myself! I wanted to make these update videos to keep track of my progress on this long immersion journey. I think it will help me keep the big picture in perspective when things inevitably get harder down the road. Maybe it can inspire somebody down the line like other people's videos have inspired me. Let me know if you have any questions!

Nice to see another brother on that Japanese Grind 😂, btw i recommend watching matt's video titled "how to have fun in a language you suck in" its was hella useful in boosting my ambiguity in the beginning but good luck man definitely going to be with u on this journey!

Let's gooooo! I've seen the video before but seeing it mid journey definitely puts it in a different light. I'm sure that's probably true for a lot of the educational stuff I watched before I actually started immersion.

It is incredible how natural you are on camera for such a new channel. Very impressive. Personally don't do immersion but did 2 semesters in college and currently srs on wanikani (vocab/kanji) and bunpro (grammar) and listening on youtube. You mentioned you have concerns about not doing traditional classroom so wanted to share that online resources like wanikani/bunpro/youtube are WAY better than traditional courses. The Japanese courses at my college were actually very good but the direction, tracking, variety etc of online resources is just way better. It's just a new paradigm that the traditional course model can't really compete with. Look forward to more videos!

Hi Greg! I love your channel name by the way lol it's very creative. I'm sure you're a lot farther by now but I just came across this video and I'm at a very similar point in learning to you! I am studying physics in college though so I have negative free time but I really want to learn Japanese too though lol. Great video, I'm looking forward to more!

If you’re looking for good grammar explanations, I HIGHLY recommend Game Gengo. He uses Japanese video games to explain grammar concepts, he has been an absolute god send in my learning.

Yes, I ran into Game Gengo by accident the other day and really have enjoyed using his content for some grammar study. I love his real examples from the games as it makes it feel more "real" for me.

I agree 100% with the amount of hours. I’m also busy, so I can only commit 2-3 hours a day. Anki and grammar for about an hour, then I immerse as much as I can within a given day! Keep up the good work man! I’m around the same amount of time in as you are (3 months) so it’s fun too see your perspective as well!
@futatsushiri

"only commit 2-3 hours a day" That's a lot!!! I feel like most people have way less time than that. Hell, I work 9-5, studying 2-3 hours would feel like I have no time left for anything else.

My past with language learning is learning English native-like through immersion (I started at age 6-7) and learning German and French in school (3 and 6 years, resp.). I noticed that my French is retained much less well compared to German, since it is so easy to get comprehensible German input as a native Dutch speaker. With Japanese, I started by self-studying in a kind of classical way, until I felt comfortable with most grammar and had a reasonable (~1000 words) vocab. I currently watch anime with subtitles and Yuyu Nihongo podcast on YT. I'm too busy to do much else though. It's been just over a year and I can really get good practice with both of these sources, but retention is of course a struggle. Not in a hurry though. Gonna eatch your second update now and will be cool to see how it goes for you! 頑張りましょう!

As someone who never really started fully immersing until I was at a level at which reading was enjoyable for me (around 4/5k vocab), it's interesting to consider how different it would have been learning this way. I certainly started improving more and more quickly once I did dive fully in to the language, so I can see the merit. Good luck with your learning, 頑張れよ!

For comprehensible input for newbies I really recommend youtuber Japanese With Shun. Lots of vlogs from N5 to N2 with most of it being around that N3-N5 area as well as a great podcast. あかね的日本語教室 is another channel that has comprehensible input but more for intermediates I'd say. Both can be useful tho

I've been using the same method. Been following Matt for a while and really found his experiences very compelling. I've also studied Latin, German, and Russian before starting Japanese. For me, learning as much vocab as possible with Anki and improving my compensation of native level material was very productive. I was able to pick up a lot of things that I didn't "study", but just acquired naturally through a lot of examples. For Japanese grammar I did read through Human Japanese as well as many different RU-vid channels to get different perspectives and examples. Satori reader was fantastic for learning to read as well as Tadoku which has many books with audio. It definitely works even though sometimes it can feel like it's slow going at times. Here's a list of some good Japanese related channels to check out if you haven't as well: That Japanese Man Yuta Speak Japanese Naturally Khalil Zabun あかね的日本語教室 Japanalysis NihongoDekita with Sayaka Game Gengo ゲーム言語

I feel you about the grammar stuff. We Westerners are too used to more systematic systems, unfortunately, but through my time of English immersion, several years ago, I kind of unblocked that "skill" of being comfortable staying calm during the "gibberish turning to understanding" phase. I'm on my own Nihongo journey right now, and it's been about 3 months too. がんばってくれ. じゃまったね.

Just gotta say man, I dont think I've related so much to another language learner like I have from your video. I studied German in HS and College and had opportunities to go to Austria, but I didnt pursue it to focus on finishing my degree. I decided to pick up Japanese so I can visit Japan and be completely immersed. I appreciate your transparency with your learning because its helped me get motivated to get back into my Japanese learning after taking a month off to refresh myself. As for Grammar practice, I have actually been using Tokini Andy here on RU-vid and I signed up with his official site. I really enjoy the way him and his wife teach Genki 1 and 2 from a native angle.

Like most people in this community I started learning Japanese with anki 2k/6k and tae kim on the side + immersion. I quickly realised that Tae Kim's guide really wasn't much help to actually learn anything, at best It allowed me to say "oh I think I read about that concept already" and go back to the guide whenever i encountered a concept i already covered with the guide. Then I found Jlab's begginer course which is an Anki deck based on TK guide's and it really helped me a lot, I think it's one of the best anki deck for beginner to help with grammar it really worked wonder for me.

Thank you for making this video and thank you to everyone who has left a comment, sharing information about resources are essential for language learning. I too am studying alone, I am two years into studying (if you can call it that) but realistically speaking I am at the same level as someone 3 or 4 months in, from what i have seen from other learners videos. I have been listening to “nihongo con teppei” for about a week, i find his pace and clarity very effective, Matt @GameGengo has a lot of excellent videos in terms of clear explanations with examples. In terms of tv shows, i have found terrace house to be good in terms of the natural Japanese in different accents and from different personality types, although I don’t particularly enjoy the content. I haven’t taught myself to use anki yet, any tips on that would be helpful, or any tips or recommendations for other mediums for that matter, 皆さん頑張ってね

Don't be scared of Anki! Honestly, I feel like Anki gets a bad wrap within the community as being a bore/chore. Maybe I'm crazy but Anki is kind of my guilty pleasure. It really is useful for pre-made vocab decks!! I'm still trying to slowly work towards a sentence mining workflow but it's not my priority at the moment. A lot of the incredibly detailed customization options aren't really necessary to get going. I was quite overwhelmed at first but I realized actually starting Anki would be more helpful than wasting too much time trying to perfectly tune my settings.

Nice dude! I've been using immersion to learn Spanish and I'll never use another method for languages. I'm at almost 800 hours now and it's not even close in terms of efficient language learning when comparing to others. I personally don't study any grammar, anki, or anything. I just listen and started reading at around 750 hours. For me, passive is all subjective. Sometimes i can do the dishes and pay attention sometimes i cant. Also, not one human on this earth can pay attention 100% all of tbe time. Its physically impossible. So dont get too hung up on this. As long as you're trying, thats what matters. Kudos to you learning Japanese. I'd love to try this in the future.
@GaijinGreg96

How do you feel about your level in spanish after that amount of time? I'm always curious to hear people's progress in languages closely related to english with immersion learning!
@osoperezoso2608
@osoperezoso2608 11 месяцев назад
@@GaijinGreg96 in terms of output, I'm getting to a point to where speaking feels almost natural. Sometimes I think in Spanish sometimes in English. But I can feel the Spanish part of my brain taking over. It's hard to explain. Input wise its WILD. I can watch native content on RU-vid/tv without too many issues as long as it's not a movie or TV program with a script. I've noticed that scripted media tends to be more vocab heavy and have lots of cultural references that you might not understand yet. But I can watch a Fútbol game and understand like 80%, can watch a talk show or interview with a celebrity in Spanish and understand like 90%>
@osoperezoso2608
@osoperezoso2608 11 месяцев назад
I will also mention that output without a DOUBT takes wayyyy less time. Like, you barely need any practice. Maybe like 50-100 hours to get used to moving your mouth in a specific way for the language. Using different muscles etc. No where near the amount of time it takes to acquire.

I live in Japan, and it sounds odd, but I haven't tried immersion yet (been here 7 months), and I am definitely still in the beginner stages of Japanese. Still, it's hard to immerse, even living here. It'll be great at "conversational level", because old people here love to chat, but if you are not conversational, it's basically impossible. I only do active learning, but I should try some passive learning. Good video!
@GaijinGreg96

Interesting perspective! I feel like I've read quite a few people state that immersion learning is almost easier when you aren't in the country that your target language is spoken in.

I’m learning Japanese bc I want to live there. I went a few years ago, knew absolutely nothing about Japan and I fell in love. So to answer your question about your wife I’d say it depends on her, if she wants to you should encourage her and not beg her to learn the language. Also, do use any grammar book like “Minna no nihongo” or “Genki”? Wish you the best 💪
@GaijinGreg96
@GaijinGreg96 11 месяцев назад
I don't use any grammar textbooks. I used Tae Kim's Grammar guide and currently going through Japanese Ammo with Misa. Wasn't a huge fan of Tae Kim and felt more confused by the written explanations the farther I got into the guide. Thanks for the advice regarding my wife! I definitely need to take a less heavy handed "begging" approach.

I've not heard of Tkyosam but I've heard of the others. MattvsJapan's videos were what made me think it was possible to learn a language. Thank you for the video ! Maybe for a beginner it might be a little complicated at first but when you feel ready, I highly recommend you to listen to the podcast "YUYU Japanese Podcast // YUYU日本語ポッドキャスト". The way he speaks with very clear Japanese and even when he uses difficult words or concepts, he still manege to explain it in a pretty simply way. He also have a youtube channel where he upload the script of his podcasts so it could also help you for memorizing kanji or for practicing shadowing Anyways, keep up with the motivation !! You're doing great !! (PS: I apologize if there are grammar or spelling errors, English is not my native language)

It really is lol If you can follow these five steps, you'll make it guaranteed 1 is pick one of the many grammar resources and read through it 2 is pick some native reading content aimed at natives such as a book/article/whatever and start reading every day for 2 hours a day 3 is refer to grammar resource you used when you don't recognize the grammar being used/it doesn't make sense 4 is look up words you don't know the meaning of, yes that means looking up things constantly at the start and suffering through it 5 is have a lot of patience and are not easily demotivated The people who fail did so because they either didn't actually want to learn the language, didn't have the patience, or were mislead by one of the many language gurus trying to scam them out of their money with some magical method of becoming fluent You acquire language when you can understand the message being sent, and the only way you understand the message being sent if there isn't a clear visual indicator, is by constantly looking up what you don't know in tons of difference contexts until you internalize it

Great Stuff! I feel like you arealready on a really good track, and aware of all the stuff that matters. A few additional tips: -You briefly mentioned Cure Dolly, i feel like she has the best Explanations for Grammar out there, because she explains it in a way that makes sense in Japanese and does not force it into the English box -I would put more focus on "intensive immersion" which is really trying to understand, looking up all the unknown words and if it does not click looking at an english translation. I think this is by far the fastest way to improve, but also the most exhausting. Freeflow especially in the beginning, does not yield that much gains in my experience, still some though. But doing a bit more intensive and then relaxing with english content is more effective in my experience than getting more hours with freeflow -You already mentioned Graded Readers, i would highly recommend Satori Reader, i used that for 3 Months after finishing the Tango N5 Deck and after that i was ready to immerse with Anime with jpn Subs comfortably. For that i would recommend Memento, it lets you look up words in the subtitles and easily make anki cards or check the english line if you're stuck. -As for Kanji i would look into the Migaku Kanji GOD Addon, it makes RTK style Kanji Cards for Vocab that you currently or will soon be learning in Anki for you
