So I would suggest to you, because this was a HUGE confidence booster to me despite being an incredibly minor thing (And probably developing bad habits with it). I would switch all your Umm's and Uhh's to the Japanese equivalents. "あの" (Ano) and ”えと" (Eto). This way you can take a moment to think, but you are breaking your Japanese streak either.

マアセンリヴァイ good advice, thanks! For French, I found changing my um's to more French-sounding "euhhh" made me sound more legit too.

I think you are doing great so far. It's very interesting to see your progress. Btw, to jump on the ヘア vs. かみ discussion: I see ヘア only used in combinations with other foreign loan words, such as ヘアドライヤー.

Japanese In A Year no problem. I'm looking forward to this week's video. On a side note, if you are interested in that: The intonation of 髪 (かみ), hair, and 紙 (かみ), paper is the same, but 神 (かみ), god, is different.

I really like that you're learning the kanji for each word as you go, I think that makes it much easier later on as you can make a lot of connections between words that way. There's always some that are oddballs that throw you, but generally it's worth it.

You are making amazing progress. There are a lot of good simple words there to expand on and begin to make sentences once you get some grammar as well. Good move learning script from the start with Japanese the spelling in kana at least is regular with the sound so it helps heaps with pronunciation if you learn how to read kana early. I never focused on Kanji for a year or so but, I think I knew a good few hundred by then anyway. So getting stuck in to Kanji early is impressive. Watch the long and short sounds though because your trying to speak slowly and clearly you have held some sounds long (とり tori sounded more like とうり)which can change the meaning with some words. 頑張ってください
@JapaneseInAYear
@JapaneseInAYear 7 лет назад
Joseph Lester thanks! Yeah, it's slower progress to learn kanji from the start, but I think it's going to help accelerate my learning later this year, since I can already read and use Japanese resources.

Oh wow, you're really doing great ! Your pronunciation sounds good overall, your 'r/l' sounds legit (I'm not Japanese, just a fellow language learner, started in January 2017 too) Also, an important question: do you worry at all about pitch accent when you learn vocabulary ? Or do you just try to mimic the audio as closely as possible so that you learn it "naturally" ?

hey man! very nice! so many words and 漢字 in just 1 month!? すごく早い! I've got a rather unpleasant question. Here we go. how do you count how many 漢字 you know? What I mean is... Let's take 大 as an example. when do you add 大 to the "know" list. when you know how to write it? When you learn at least 1 reading? when you know all the reading? when you can use it? I ask this, because it's hard for me to check off kanji off a list as known. I feel I never really know any of them, cause I stamble across new readings and meanings all the time for each one I've studied and thought I new already. Most probably it's just me overthinking though. I can't remember how was my "English learning curve" to compare either.
@JapaneseInAYear
@JapaneseInAYear 7 лет назад
I'm counting the Kanji as soon I put it into my Anki deck. So, still takes a few weeks after that before it really begins to solidify in my mind. It's hard to measure when you really "know" a character, or a word, so counting them in the flashcard creation process is the most reliable way to count I have for now. That means I know one meaning, and one pronunciation for that character. Later, when I see that kanji again in a new word, I do not count it again, even if I learn a new meaning or new pronunciation for it. Hope that helps!

Be careful not to take in too much at a time! As someone who has studied Spanish, French, and German, I can tell you that Japanese words disappear out of your head much quicker! (except for Katakana words). Good thing you're learning kanji at the same time! That helps you remember the pronunciation of words. :-)

Awesome progress! One thing I think you should work on is your pronunciation of the /u/ sound. You're pronouncing it with rounded lips as it would be in English, Italian and French. In Japanese the lips are somewhat pressed together, but not rounded.

@Philoglossos

Japanese In A Year Totally! If you're having trouble with it, one thing that might help you is looking at the fact that in Hiragana/Katakana the /h/ line of kana changes to /f/ before /u/. This is because originally that line was fa, fi, fu, fe, fo but the initial /f/ sound changed to /h/. The only exception to this shift in pronunciation was /fu/ because the mouth/ lip pronunciation of the japanese /f/ is super similar to that of the japanese /u/, just with the lips closer together to make the f like sound. To get the /u/ sound it might help to make that weird japanese /f/ sound, and then separate your lips a tiny tiny bit so that there's no friction.

How much money are you willing to spend on learning? It is a big accomplishment to master a language without spending any money and that is my goal. I utilize the internet and PDF files, but I'm the type of person who prefers physical copies so I can't help myself from buying books from time to time. I was just wondering because I'm planning on buying a Genki textbook (even though I have an online copy lol) Excellent progress in your first month; If you would like the Genki for when you start learning grammar, I could send you a download link. I'm just skimming and going over the grammar sections. It's really easy to understand :)
@silviemonk5556
@silviemonk5556 7 лет назад
I hope that's not a pirated copy. People work really hard on books, movies and music, and deserve to get paid for all of that work.
@JapaneseInAYear
@JapaneseInAYear 7 лет назад
As little as possible! I've spent $20 so far. :) You can always borrow grammar books from the library. Most of my expenses will probably go into iTalki tutoring sessions, once I get to that point.
@reinonihongo949
@reinonihongo949 7 лет назад
Silvie Monk I think you missed the fact that I also said I buy books as well... In this age and time, not everyone has the luxury to buy said resources. Furthermore, "free" copies are more accessible and convenient for most. I do, however, agree with you. I would love to directly support the creators, but I am only a high school student. I have no job and like I said, not everyone is fortunate enough to buy, buy, buy. Therefore, I consider these copies appropriate for my situation.
@reinonihongo949

Silvie Monk I even said I was planning on buying the textbook .-.
@silviemonk5556

It's appropriate to steal because of your situation? What's appropriate for the author's situation? You can certainly go to the library or find used copies. Having been the victim of piracy, I can tell you that it is financially devastating. We have to eat, pay rent and bills, just like anybody else. Just because you want Genki, but can't afford it doesn't give you license to steal it. There are many free resources for learning Japanese. I will never understand why so many think it's OK for pirates to make money off other people's work, but not the authors of those works. It's madness.

Yes, I'm studying mainly on my own. I'll be starting grammar soon. I'll talk about it in a future video, but it will be a combination of free resources (Tae Kim's grammar guide), help from tutors on iTalki.com, and later, real textbooks like Genki.
