Why We Don't Teach Readings (yet!) As mentioned in the introduction video to this series ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RKWrWRFyfYo.html ), it is my philosophy that it is a WASTE OF TIME to learn the readings for each kanji in isolation. I explain WHY in that video. To learn how to read kanji, I think it is best to learn WORDS that contain that kanji in the context of SENTENCES. We WILL be doing that in this series, after learning the meanings and writings for the 118 kanji in the JLPT N5 and Kanken 10 tests. So fear not! You WILL be learning how to read them in the near future. 😊

I'm at that weird place where I already know these kanji well enough that I don't need the mnemonics anymore. Writing out the calendar date each day in Japanese helped me out a lot with that. But I'm really looking forward to the next of these, also really can't wait to start incorporating them into words too.

Writing the date everyday is a smart thing, I'm gonna adopt that

Last year, I was 10 points away from passing the JLPT5 test. I'm pleased to state that I instantly recognized all of the kanji in this video. I need to get back into my studies again so I can hopefully pass on my next attempt.

Instead of banana, I sort of get a crescent moon vibe for the ancient version of moon. =) I got them all right!

If you look back at the evolution of Kanji from the Chinese Hanzi you'd see that your intuition is correct, the old symbol for moon used to be much more simplified looking more like a "D" and resembling a crescent moon! :)

my story for sun is: mouth tried eating poisonous worm and it tasted burn like the sun in his mouth moon: after he open his mouth good worm enter and it cool his mouth like the moon white: good worm fails to enter his mouth and end up on top of him and it makes him white 100: another poisonous worm comes and stomp good worm making his pain 100x painful

Another way to remember 100 is to look at the kanji sideways. It kindof has a sideways 1 at the top and two 0's below it, just like a sideways 100 (where all the numbers just happen to be connected)

Tokini Andy: want to get to level N5 by my Japan vacation, 2024, June 21-July 6…. Now, would you recommend that I memorize Hiragana and Katakana and learn some Kangi first before I begin anything else. I have memorized hiragana and now am working on Katakana… I am working with Rocket languages, too… I need direction and the tools I should be using… I am a retired teacher so I have time. Thanks, John

The zhou dynasty sun is identical to the astronomical symbol for sun.

I think, we can imagine the 100 this way, "I paid 100 yen to ride on the cable car which was white"

For me, i just remember that the sun (日)is a hundred earths long, and 一 looks long. I like that mneumonic better, its a lot less work for me.

The only thing I’d add is to how to say these Kanji in Japanese instead of just knowing what they mean. Like how ten is じゅう (Juuh

That's in the second part of the series (which we're restarting soon). 😊 I think it's important to separate those steps.

Can you add prononciation in japanese to this serie, that would help a lot
@ToKiniAndy

We will be doing that after learning the first 118 kanji. We won’t be doing it along with the meanings. I am against that method.

I don't understand why you don't teach the Japanese words associated to the kanji, it's a good opportunity to learn the numbers, nichi, tsuki, shiro etc

found learning readings super confusing because 4 is like an exception to an exception to an exception
