Find out my KEY dates and Bonsai Care Tips for Japanese Larch. A short and simple guide that is ideal for beginners. Pruning dates, Wiring, Potting, Disease, Fertilising and a bit of cricket too...
Please be aware that many other hobbyists carry out pruning and wiring work on their larches without issue. Please do not think that I am saying they are wrong because I wait until buds swell.
If you want to see more detailed explanations of this then I urge you to look at the playlist below.

This is a great series Xav. One of the nice things about larch is how the buds rotate around the branch which is great for directional pruning. Super subject for bonsai. Great for beginners.

As always, loved the video. Great information. Bought a bunch of seedlings last year and will let them grow in the pots a couple more years to thicken up the trunks and then will explore the pruning techniques you outlined. So very timely and helpful! Thanks. Great new series.

Great vid - will have to add to my tool kit. Feeling pretty inadequate since I've managed to kill both my nice larch in under 2 years. Hoping a couple started from seed will get me back on the learning track - spring will tell. Stay warm!.

Thanks Xavier!! I love Tamarack!! That was a lot of great information there! I most certainly hope to have a great forest or gorgeous specimen trees as you have! I am going to try moving more to native trees from my area. More suited to my slightly cooler than your climate.... 3a/3b 😄💚❤ tee hee hee!

Hey Xav. Nice video and good informations for Bonsai beginners . Good Job. In my last video i show an Larch Ikadabuki ,Bonsai Raft Shape and the Larch get Roots on the trunk . It is an art airlayer, i think. and thats is perfekt. I hope to make more of that Raft Shape Larches. I will try. Wish me Luck . Lets make a Challeng together with the Larch Raft Shape. Cheers Tom

Hi Xavier, I have taken the spring extension growth prunings off my Japanese larch, literally just stuck them in light coir and perlite mix into a plastic bag for a couple of weeks then took out and placed in light shade and over summer they took nicely. I had enough last year to start a group planting 👍🏻
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for this tip - I shall try this and see how I get on. Is that the coconut husk stuff?
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat 6 месяцев назад
When you say into a plastic bag was that what you used for humidity?
@garybrown8143
@garybrown8143 6 месяцев назад
Hi Xavier yes just a small 9 cm plastic pot filled with the coconut coir compost 50/50 with perlite then popped into a snappy sandwich bag after watering and I just left it untouched in light shade for a couple of weeks, all looked green and healthy so I unfastened the bag top to let it breathe a couple of days then just placed the pot on one of my benches and watered occasionally and they took off. I didn’t take them out and split them up until the following spring, all done well last year

Yay. The one I've been waiting for. Great info package on J larch, Xavier. I'm planning to dig up mine after 3 years it's been in the ground. I can't resist not having it somewhere that I can regularly see it anymore. I guess the right time to dig up is the same as repotting?
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat 6 месяцев назад
I normally dig very early winter but I know that later winter is equally fine as well. I would get it up as soon as the grown has softened from the winter / early spring but definitely before the buds break :)

You’ve really hit on a great series formula here Xav. I need to do some brutal chops on my North American Larch group planting. The whole thing is too tall for the scale I’m trying to convey. Zone 7a. Do you think early May? BTW, I’m with you on propagation from cuttings. I have some from last year in the greenhouse that did root. Nigel said he’s never gotten one to survive the winter. I just need one small one for my penjing.
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat 6 месяцев назад
I try to do my bigger chops once that first flush has hardened out and the tree has recovered all that early energy again. June seems to be when I have done them before. I look forward to seeing your results :)

Great video again, Xavier! Followed your advice for pruning last year and my larch developed really nice ramifications in the lower part. I do not have any clue why, but unfortunately it also started to die back from top down. I did a decent repotting before in the spring, not taking many roots away, nor let it dry out. Do you have any idea about what could have happened, any experience and even better an advice to stop the die back? Any comments highly appreciated. Thanks Martina
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat
@XaviersBonsaiRetreat 6 месяцев назад
My only thoughts are that the tree was still recovering from the repot? I do have occasional larches that dieback unexpectedly and it is normally a sign that the tree hasnt got the strength to maintain that growth - roots. This year feed it up nicely and let's see what runs out in the spring. I am guessing there was no problems with aphids or any other bug related aspect? Send em some pictures wehn it is flushing out again. Cheers martina :)
