Maples that like full sun can seem difficult to find, however there are many cultivars that actually benefit from sun exposure. Red maples, green maples, weeping or upright, there is in fact a good selection I show how it difficult to generalise based on leaf shape colour etc. and learning from experience and research is key. I also mention how direct sunlight is just one of several factors that need to be considered. For example ambient heat, humidity and wind all have their part to play. If you like this video I have many on the subject of growing Japanese Maples

Thanks for the help , I have been over protective of the sun with my acers . lots are healthy but the jerrie Schwartz is going very green kept in the shade 90% of the day. Nothing like the colour of yours anymore. I do enjoy your videos and info .Well done.

More interesting content. Thank you. I have a couple of old compact weeping red lace leaf maples that are terrific (one in pot and one in border) that I’m not sure the name of so I added a Katsura a couple of weeks ago to add colour contrast. Today I’m off to B&Q to see if I can find a sun loving variety for south facing front garden. Plus maybe a few more to begin my collection. I’ve always loved acers and I’ve been looking for a way to transform my garden into something easier to maintain and I think this could be it. As discussed, I just need to research the watering of pots while away.

Started collecting Japanese maples also on my garden, I have 3 sango-kaku, 2 are planted on the ground and the smallest one I just dug it up a week ago and move it temporary on a plastic pot. I see yours are all potted, what size are those terracotta pots? By the way lovely garden, love those assorted acer trees

Hi and thank you. The pots are about 30cm and my latest video happens to be all about repotting which you might find useful. I’ve seen Sango Kaku reach 40 feet tall over time in the ground, so hope you have a big garden! Thanks for posting. Carl

Your trees look perfectly healthy. I was wondering if you have an email I might be able to show you my Emporer one tree that is in almost full sun. Its leaves were slightly damaged from the nursery and it has some branches i think may need to be pruned but im not sure. Thanks

I prune out very small branches because I like the tree to be more sculptural looking. Is this wrong? You said that the leaf cover provides shade for the tree. Viewing your vid from NW North Carolina. Thank you.
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 24 дня назад
It’s really just my preference not to prune, but I would consider not pruning too much in the early years if heat / sun are an issue 👍

Do you have any experiences with cuttings from any of your trees ? Would be great to here any results if so, great trees
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples 5 месяцев назад
Hi and thanks for watching. Cuttings don’t work very well with most maple cultivars as their roof system is not good enough to sustain the tree. These were being sold by supermarkets a few years ago, but often die after a year or two. The best ones to try would be the generic Atropurpureum as these do well on their own roots and are the root stock for grafted trees. Carl

Good to find a UK Japanese Maple enthusiast. Is there such a thing as a green leaved Japanese Maple, preferably with an Upright habit?
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples Год назад
Hi Sylvia good is that there are literally hundreds available! Common ones are Orange dream (leaves out orange but quickly turns green, loves shade) Seiryu (very sun tolerant and disectum leaves, fast growing) and many others. If you check out some more of my videos there are many on individual cultivars. Thanks for posting. Carl

I was wandering if there is a way to shape the maples? I look at Twomblys red sentinel and Im thinking that it should be possible to make it strait up. Looking at Sango kaku and thinking what if I try to wire around the soft branches out so they can shape like a bigger bonsai. Im now planting all my maples in the garden and thinking what if some day they come very close to each other and start to fight for space. And I always wander, how to find the leader branch on a weeping maple? I would like my Garnett to get taller like in the garden of your other video...
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples Год назад
Hi and yes it’s perfectly possible to shape these trees. The Twomblys will go up pretty much if it’s own accord really, probably more so if it’s out in the open as it will get even light. You can shape the Sango too but again if you perhaps look at my videos of Batsford arboretum you will see it’s natural shape. Look carefully at growth rates and shade potential, smaller trees can go under others so think in 3d. For the weepers just stake all the branches up works well. You can often see this done with many trees in garden centres. Hope that helps Carl

Just bought some acers palmatums, Orange Dream, Ukigumo, and Osakazuki. How often should I water them? I have put them in pots
@Japanesemaples
@Japanesemaples Год назад
Hi and some nice varieties there! Water them only when the compost is quite dry and I would get a water probe from Amazon to check this. When you water flood the pots and really let is soak in, hopefully you have good drainage so excess will escape. The Ukigumo is the exception so use about half the water and be sparing with it. Hope that helps Carl
