The weapon Trese is using is not a katana, it is called a "kris", a sword/dagger used by Filipino Muslim warriors in Mindanao island of the Philippines. 😅 The concept of the story as well is based on Filipino mythical creatures, not just zombies, same as Japan has creatures like "kappa", "tengu", etc.

That figure with the two swords was not really shown in any of the action scenes, only in the prophetic vision. However, bladed weapons held in both hands is used a lot in Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) such as Kali or Eskrima.
Everything you see in Trese is all about Filipino folklores and myths. Watching the series would actually educate you more about our culture. Not everything animated is copied from Japanese. Just appreciate the series please

Actually, I heard the first would be Barangay 143. I just think Trese got more hype because it's popular and also picked up by Netflix and they super hyped it up.
in order to understand this anime, you have to research a bit about filipino mythic creatures. Basically the anime is about Trese(family name) who comes from a family of priests and priestess warriors who are mediating the coexistence between human kind and mythic creatures. Trese´s bloodline has a sort of shaman like power that enables her to fight the creatures.
@@FwostbyteWinterwolf121 hmmm as far as i know; babaylan is a pagan priest or priestess but as i`ve further checked, it is also equivalent to shaman. In my opinion, Shamans deal with spirits but babaylans deal with everything beyond humankind(not sure tho)?
one weakness of this series, in my opinion, is the context of the creatures are not explained well, making those not familiar with Filipino folklore a bit confused (as I saw in a lot of reactions to this). But I feel like Trese is more like Constantine/Hellblazer told in the way John Wick's world is portrayed (where the world building is in much mystery leading the viewers to speculate or theorize).
Trese's premise is part of the Philippine Folklore that we grew up on but if you ask some of us, it is base on true stories hehehe. Those creatures you saw are from our culture different from zombies or demons, you can google them I'm pretty sure you'll be surprise by them.
As you notice the identical of comic scene that we watch in a japanese anime is the same. Because of inspiration came from TOEI ANIMATION in makati philippines who created ONE PIECE, DRAGON BALL and many more anime's that we watch.

The serie is interesting, and has some potential, with all the South Pacific mithology they could expand the Monsters and Deities, after all it isn't only people that make migrations!(and in Grimm there were some monsters that had migrated from Europe and Asia!)
Tbh we know most of these creatures because we've been told things like "something landed on the rooftop" and our whole family assumed it as monsters (aswang) And in our place, most of us say "tao po" ( human here ) when knocking the door for decades so it's normal for us here. It's like a living horror fantasy to be aware of those creatures.

Try to search more about Philippines culture and Philippines mythical creatures so that you will understand what are those creatures. They are not like Japanese zombies but even more.
I think people should really learn about Filipino Folklores before reacting to this animation. I mean the guy just got confused af but I can't blame him tho. But I gotta admit its a bit similar to Jujutsu kaisen since the story revolves around magic and the supernaturals and stuffs like that but he misunderstood a thing.( This is like a quick trivia) Aswang is not a zombie because they are like humans and they are alive, its more like a cannibal or something that eats human flesh and they can actually use disguise. During the day they can appear like a normal human and women of their kind are actually more attractive so they can lure preys with their looks and bring them home for supper.

This anime is based on Philippine folklore. Swords are in existence in Philippine culture long before the Spaniards came and colonized the Philippines in the 15hundreds.Swords are not unique to the Japanese. Even the Vikings have their own.No shade here. I love how rich the Japanese culture is.
The protagonist in the story, Trese is a scion of a long line of Babaylans. What a babaylan is can be easily googled if anyone has the slightest interest in Philippine culture/folklore.If one looks for any value in relationship in this anime, it was mentioned in the trailer. Trese and her kind mediate between humankind and the supernatural world to save and keep order.

I'm a Filipino but I watch it in english and japanese audio and for me I like it better in japanese audio. Maybe Bec I love japanese anime , and I'm used to hear japanese audio😃😃😃😃
