Interesting, especially in contrast to: "The purpose of this art (Daito ryu Aikijujutsu) is not to be killed, not to be struck, not to be kicked, and we will not strike, will not kick, and will not kill. It is completely for self-defense. We can handle opponents expediently, utilizing their own power, through their own aggression. So even women and children can use it. However, it is taught only to respectable people. It's misuse would be frightening..." -- Takeda Sokaku

Worth waiting for... I like the distinction you make about the differences between techniques for war, policing and self-defense (+sport). Aikido has always been a practical self-defense martial art that focuses itself on not punch/kick/tackling the opponent. Good evening from Spain. As I was waiting for, your research work about Japanese method of Arrest and Control offenders by Japanese Police. Another excellent documentary is: congratulations. Even though Taiho Jutsu it's a very extensive Police Self Defence and restraint procedures system without and with auxliary weapons. In 2017 the only time I visited Japan with my wife, I could train with some Japanese Police Officers and talk about the methods they are instructed for Police work purposes. Very interesting experience, indeed. I already learnt a part of Taiho Jutsu in Belgium with my late Sensei and at the Local Police where I served. It's a very compleet method indeed. Thank you very much, one more time Chadi. Blessings from Spain.

Since I have multiple disabilities that cause me constant pain from the neck down, I can't really do Judo or the other martial arts I used to do so I mix together leg sweeps and takedowns from Shuai Jiao and mix in some basic joint locks that mostly resemble basic Jujutsu techniques and I add in some holds and chokes you see in most forms of wrestling. I've also learned some limb breaks as well, but I only ever use them in a serious self defense situation if I feel someone is hostile enough to where it's appropriate. I'm looking to add some Taiho-Jutsu techniques to this, so this video caught my eye and has only reaffirmed that I think they would be extremely useful to me given I train for self defense. Thank you Chadi for your work and all the effort you go to in order to bring this interesting content to our collective attention. I hope that you continue to have major success on this platform with all you that do.

This is my style police seizing Arts. It's definitely different than when you go through the Striking techniques for throwing. Wall incorporating boxing is important it's really all about the angles of attack and targets. Would love to see more of that video with that Aikido guy doing some great striking. But you can do a lot of classical moves if you implement the right technique. And we have to distinguish between and person who is a professional fighter who gets hit every day versus a person who sits around or does manual labor. And you're definitely right you got a spar. You'll see here in America we use gear that's called mantis or high gear or even Redman suits in the police training. Since most police training here in the United States is done once a year. They emphasize more gross movement. The Japanese police and the British police. Not sure too much about the French but they usually trained more in hand-to-hand because they have the budget and the manpower to overwhelm an assailant. But here in the United States the emphasis is more on gun fighting. But there is a correlation simple self-defense and protecting one's weapon. And you can tell the officers that do really well have extra training that they use on the side. Great video would love to see more of that Aikido guy striking don't know his name can't spell it

I think you're right Chadi. It should be all in one, with a self defense thrust if you're going to get the full benefit of these arts. In a self defense or an arresting situation, you must know how to strike to disable or make openings for grappling and then control quickly. You picked very important points to emphasized in this video. And as always, your research was amazing. Superb commentary.

Weapon to Weapon, all that stuff is also in Aiki Ken and Aiki Jo, not just Kendo (hitting the hand and disarming). In basic practices we go for the head or weapon, but hitting the hand is the true application. First level is to respond with a strike. Second level is to learn to disarm by taking away the weapon. Study the Kumi jo and Kumi Tachi and all their variations. Everything is in there with all its cross overs. Take a study of Traditional Aikido by Saito Sensei, vol 1 and 2. Static practice is the first form of pressure testing. I allows you to hone the form and learn the important angles under a strong grip. Pressure test from dynamic movement comes late when you have the form down. This is just a progression of learning towards building up your skill.

Same in Jodo. We use the Jo staff to deflect the weapon then strike the hand. We can follow with a strike to solar plexus, ribs or head but the hands are targeted.

Nice video ! Some things in your prononciation seems to indicate you have lived or are living in France ? If so, as a judo / aikido / etc lover, you should try Yoseikan-budo if you have the opportunity to do a stage. It is a "japanese" martial art created by a japanese guy in France by mixing various martials arts that where trained in his father's dojo in japan. It's different from the yoseikan that is done in japan where the various martial traditions arents mixed. French yoseikan-budo is a kind of modern mixed martial arts based on japanese traditions, mostly judo (but with french boxing added). I practiced it in Switzerland for a few years and it was pretty fun ! Note that in France they have a very strange way of prononcing the word yoseikan... the "kan" is prononced as in the french word "quand"... even the japanese founder and his sons say it in a very french way (maybe to not hurt the feeling of the french people ???). Note that for some reason it's not affiliated with the french judo federation, but with the french karate federation, but the stages are usually opened for all. And all the guys from the karate federation (mostly shotokan in France) also prononce "shotokan" wrongly...

To be honest he acts, or at least did act a few years ago like a convert to a new religion who becomes a fanatic (the old saying "More Catholic than the Pope" comes to mind) to the point where even if other MMA people say something positive about Aikido's footwork or timing he would try to shut them down (almost like he couldn't believe the heresy of a MMA person finding anything positive in Aikido) I don't know if that additude of his has changed or not, like I said I refuse to watch any video with him in it because I have lost all respect for that man.

It's disturbing to me that here in America our police force is so poorly trained. They deal with violence on a regular basis and don't have a clue? Maybe they could project the cost of their lawsuits and damage to lives and use that money to train them properly. It would serve two purposes if required. 1. Mental an physical health 2. the problem is that if you want to have a resistance, you have to make it a sport, putting out anything could be dangerous, and trying to put in the aspects you consider more relevant. In karatye they have removed the joint locks, in order to fight with resistance, but just in one aspect. In they have removed the strikes just in order to have a resistance only in the aspect of the push pull. All martial arts traditionally had everything. But exactly for the reason that people want to have resistance, in order to make it in a not dangerous way, you have to remove something in terms of techniques. So to work against resistance is exactly what everybody already do, with the problem that, since it is done not with the entire martial art, but just with an aspect of it, it cannot work fully in a rules free environment.

Again, more good stuff. I will point out in the one shields vs gun scenario. Remember, action beats reaction (and they allowed assailant to not only retrieve but point gun at them). They are not mind readers, thus don't know if he will immediately fire. This is a huge risk (even with shields, if of course they are ballistic shields and not just hard plastic as they appeared, which would potentially be useless against ammunition). Then, you said they shot him in a non vital point so as not to kill him. United States law enforcement aren't trained to shoot to kill. They are trained to stop the threat (thus, aim center mass). Why, because as in an unarmed scenario, armed encounters are also dynamic. It is a Hollywood fairytale to aim in an actual life/death scenario at an assailant's arms or legs and think there is any real possibility of being successful. Those, whom have been in real armed conflict know these things, and are driven crazy by this often Hollywood driven misconception. Of course, each specific incident drives its own actions/reactions. I am not meaning to sound confrontational, and really enjoy your posts and insights. Keep up the good stuff. Just offering a little clarity on something that gets under my skin a wee bit in general (not specific, to you).

Aikido without proper striking (Atemi) / deflection is pointless in this current era. It’s not even an opinion. A student should know what to look for when an aggressor initiates an attack. Experience non compliant attacks in practice. Flow/Sparring/Randori/Resisted attacks. Should always train to be first when intercepting the attack or strike is about to be delivered. No hesitation. People forget Aikijitsu/Aikido is based on the sword and you should adopt that concept of either you cut the opponent down first and decisively or your dead. Simple as that. So Aikidoka’s kick the shit out of your enemies then subdue and pin and or break or dislocate limbs. Don’t hold back in real life. 🤗

@@michaelstrong4823 yeah but it really depends, most people will just lose all of their force on their grip when shoot, so their weapon would fall. and i know that most would shoot unintentionally when this happens because of factors like how scary a gunshot sound is, but on this video, the police have shields and there are no hostages, there is no need to kill. Same thing if the suspect only has a knife, you don't need to fricking kill him, unless he's to close to you and you don't have time to shoot to a non-lethal part of the body. And also, the commenter didn't expecify on shooting someone that has a gun, he generalized because the american police is generally shooting for everything, even in knife situations and such. sorry if i have bad grammar or any typos. English isn't my first language, the comenter also had a lot od typos, is not that he doesn't know the difference between "to" and "too" maybe he just mispeled, just like he did with "merica" and "verry". I would say that gun and knife defenses should not be trained with the belief that it can save you from a real attack. Disarming a gun at point blank is extremely risky and almost impossible against a weapon trained assailant. Unless you're wearing armor of any sort, knife fights almost always leave both parties either dead or severely injured. Likewise, nowadays, the right way to handle firearms will always be with 2 hands. This will be extremely hard to disarm.

Chadi great video but many of these techs being demonstrated. are against semi compliant subject actors. Against a violent subject it would be a bit more intense and not so pretty. They are also using shields in some points, and that’s great if you have well trained officers to work together to do this, and if they even have a shield immediately available. Some calls are immediate and you don’t have time to wait for a tactical team to arrive to take control of the situation. In the US there is no real universal guide for departmental Use of Force for all officers, since every state has numerous departments and policies in place. What may be allowed in one department, is banned in another one. For the most part, because of the George Floyd Case and a few others, many departments do not allow any neck restraints, and knees on the neck or back are strongly discouraged. NY city is the absolute worst when it comes to what they can and can’t do, but that because NY Gov officials don’t care about their officers, that’s another story lol. I am a retired cop, Jiujitsu Black Belt and I teach police seminars in the South Florida area. I know a bit about this topic and really appreciate your educational videos. I have a Jiu-Jitsu approach to training cops. But is much different than what is being shown here, yet I get great results. Perhaps I can show you one day what I’m doing, in hopes of others copying what I’m doing and get a universal approach to Use of Force. Hope we can communicate one day. 👮🏽‍♂️🥋🤙🏼

I wonder why US don't have a unified police force like other countries, including my country. Don't you guys think that it is a problem? People will see police as the police anyway, no matter which state/city the police are the police, so why not only have one unified police department and one policy? I also heard that US police officer buy your own guns and gears, it is so weird...furthermore, most of police footage I watched here on YT involved gun shootings, is that how US people living everyday? Honestly the guys could take a lesson from US cops when it came to that specific scenario of the guy that pointed the gun at them. Gunning someone down for simply having a gun on them is excessive imo , But the only thing that separated one of the officers from death was literally only him pulling the trigger. If a suspect points a gun at you and you dont shoot him, that is nothing more than gambling with your own life at that point. And if you get out of it alive you were just lucky.
