@@user-go2sb6pg3d As far as European beauty standards go, I (as a European) would say she is merely cute. Also, she explicitly has thought about the consequences. As a foreign born Japanese citizen, raised in Japan from a very early age by a Ukrainian mother and a Japanese stepfather, she feels completely Japanese, and wanted to help change the common perception of what it means to be Japanese. She did not go into this blindly. S for blame, there is no blame, because nobody did anything wrong. The organizers did nothing wrong in setting the rules for entry, and she did nothing wrong by entering the contest. Nor did the judges do anything wrong in choosing her as the winner. Credit might be more apt than blame. It isn’t exactly Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat in the front of the bus (google it if you don’t know the reference), but giving her a chance to compete and win is a tiny step in the right direction. As for her actually winning, unless shown convincing evidence otherwise, I will simply assume that among the finalists, she was the candidate who best met THEIR criteria for Miss Nippon.

The point isn’t a matter of how Japanese she is or how she grew up. The issue is a matter of how a woman who’s genetically white is supposed to be representing beauty of people who are genetically Japanese, and it’s not fair to Japanese women because they can’t be white and they lose the representation that they deserve just as much as any other woman from any other race, ethnicity, or culture. I’m not a woman, but I feel like having a white woman be the symbol of beauty for girls in Japan would be so unhealthy for little girls and make them wonder why something always looks off or “ugly” about themselves when they look in the mirror. Edit: If she were half Japanese, then it would be different because it will still represent a diversity in Japan. People who are half Japanese (yes, half black or brown skin/japanese too) are still Japanese and should be accepted as part of the country too. There may not be much diversity in Japan, but as long as they have Japanese blood in them, they should be accepted as part of the diversity even if it’s a very small minority of people.

I will respectfully disagree with you. In Japan, which is not an ethnically diverse country. She, a non-ethnic Japanese citizen would be considered a minority. Therefore, it seems by that logic, as it might be inferred from your comment, that only people of the majority race should be allowed to represent the country. Which I am sure that you would not agree with, as that would be discrimination openly and proudly. To say that an immigrant should not be allowed to represent or even compete with a fair change to represent the country, simple because they're not of the ethnic majority, is plainly wrong. Think of a Japanese woman not being allowed in a US beauty pageant because she is not of the ethnic majority. Or an indigenous person not being allowed because they are not of the majority, and do not share blood with majority. Does that not sound wrong to you? Does that not sound like something out of the 1950's, or the 1900's? These days, the world for the most part of not as ethnically homogeneous as Japan is. In demographic terms, non-ethnic Japanese citizens account for roughly 2.5% of the population. Those of European descent account for less 0.05% of the Japanese population. This would not be a huge issue I am sure if had she not been born in Ukraine, and ethnically Ukrainian. Regardless of the actions that she has taken that should not and do not represent Japan. As a Japanese citizen, and as a person who is was raised in Japan since she was 5 and raised by a Ukrainian mother and a Japanese Step-father. How is she not Japanese? Could we apply these sort of rules in Europe? In Australia? In The United States? There are people who have lived in Japan for generations, but because they don't look 'Japanese' are always looked upon as foreigners, and treated as such. 'Upon receiving the title, she had said in her speech: "I had not been accepted as Japanese many times, but I am filled with gratitude to have been recognized as Japanese today."' (Source BBC)

yeah, bro.. I don't follow this pageantry stuff. But I'm pretty sure for the past few years in Western Europe a lot of non native women won the contests. And if we look at "national sports teams" you will find they're also comprised out of different peoples In my opinion, these beauty competitions should be representing the prettiest women from that country/ethnicity/culture. But they've seem to have stopped doing that a long time ago. Today obese trans women win these beauty contests. I'm pretty sure the latest Miss Netherlands is a trans woman (and not a good looking one either). And there is also the problem that countries are becoming increasingly diverse. Are we just going to ban people from competing that aren't full blood native? What about countries like America where there really isn't a "native" people other than the small amount of native Americans left? Should the Americans allow for only white? Or black and white? What if the black lady is from Africa? What if the white lady is a refugee from Ukraine? What about Latin Americans? What if she's Mexican but born and raised in the USA and her family has lived there for 3 generations? Some white girl recently won miss in some African country and African Americans were furious lol. But she's from that country. Should she be banned from competing? To me it's far more important that they actually try to pick the most attractive women they can find. Than have it be based on ethnicity etc. The problem more so than this is that they tend to intentionally pick women that aren't attractive .. or aren't women at all

@brian8653

@pyrylehtonen-caponigro3198 America is not a homogeneous country like Japan, so this comparison doesn't make sense. America has been multi ethnic since its conception. Black Americans have been in America for hundreds of years and are a direct influence on most American culture. A Ukrainian born woman who has been primarily brought up in Japan has every right to claim to be japanese but in the concept of a beauty pagent that's meant to display the best of your people, it makes sense that there Is contention over whether she should get the title. Imagine a Japanese born person raised in Kenya, taking the title of miss Kenya, most would see it as a misrepresentation of the country although that person has the right to claim to be Kenyan. Ok, alot of japanese are pretty fair skinned naturally themselves. What does this have to do with white worshipping? Having tan skin, for many centuries has been associated with working in the fields etc. Having pale skin meant you had status & didnt have to do that kind of labor. Cultures obsessions with something, doesnt always stem from what many people think nowadays. East asians at one point were considered white by west europe, whereas eastern Europeans (like her) werent. Definitions & narratives always change.

@littlefootnanak7178 Yes, I am fully aware of the historical class structures of Asian cultures. Once upon a time, the ruling class was fair skin, so everyone wanted to be copy that. Yes, that’s the origins. But in Modern Times, because of european colonialism and imperialism, many Asian people value european features over their own. They idealize european skin, face shape, nose shape, hair and eye colors. This puts white people on a pedestal, which in terms is “white-worshipping” Just like the japanese ladies in the video said, they believe white people have been on the “top” for so long, that everyone is jealous of them and idealize their physical features.

I remember Ariana Miyamoto(Representative from Japan of Miss Universe 2015. Her father is black American). It wasn’t controversial as much as Karolina(Miss Japan this year)’s win. Very few Japanese people opposed her win but foreigners and foreign media said that many of us did. My American acquaintance also said that Karolina’s win came from Japanese white worship. He said Japanese criticism against Ariana’s win came from that Japanese people don’t like black people. I objected it. He doesn’t look at Japanese people criticize Karolina’s win, but her win itself. And he doesn’t at Ariana’s win but does Japanese people criticize her. I said that Ariana’s win wasn’t controversial as Karolina’s and many more Japanese people criticize Karolina’s win than people did Ariana’s win, but he disagreed with me. Even now, his Japanese isn’t good…How can he tell many of us did? I think one of reasons why many more Japanese people criticize Karolina’s win than people did Ariana’s is Ariana is half Japanese. Another reason is…sorry to be rude but most Japanese people seem to think that Ariana is prettier than Karolina. There were other Japanese people when we talked about it. All of them knew about Karolina but didn’t remember Ariana. They checked Ariana and said 〝Wow, she is very pretty!〟. He looked dissatisfied…Why do many Westerners look for 〝look up to white point〟and 〝look down on black point〟from us❓ Almost all of us didn’t get Japanese nationality from our own will but Karolina did. Ariana chose Japanese nationality after her win(She was too young to do when she was crowned). No matter what their race is, I consider all people with Japanese nationality true Japanese.

One of my classmates was of Ainu heritage and she had the classic thick wavy hair, darker skin, freckled skin and stockier curvy build of a young Ainu woman but none of these traits of hers are considered beautiful in Japan. The Japanese people go on about race but while most of them accept the indigenous heritage people's, none of these aboriginal peoples would ever be selected for a "Miss Japan" beauty contest.

I think that most of the Japanese citizens don't even care about the pageant itself. The only people who are shocked and saying that her win is "controversial" are foreigners and the foreign press. Japan is seen from all the world as a racist, xenophobic and extremely conservative country but in reality most of the Japanese don't care about a person that doesn't have "Japanese blood" wins a "Miss Japan" pageant.

Being raised or even born in Japan doesn't mean much if you are not grown in the influence of Japan's culture and values. She might have been raised in Japan but she was raised by her Ukranian parents, no? There is a lot of influence from her family. Just like in the US. There is a lot of immigrants that come and even though they adapt to America's values and culture, many immigrant families influence their children to hold onto their heritage and homeland's culture. That's why I don't think she should have gotten the title. There must have been better suited women for this.

@@MademoiselleRed1390 I did not say she (or any random girl with Eurocentric appearance) has the ONLY right looks for the contest. What I mean is that her looks fall within the acceptable spectrum of looks to represent the Japanese nation. Any random Japanese citizen qualifies, which means that obviously more often can not, someone with genetically Japanese looks will win, since such persons constitute the great majority of Japanese nationals, but that occasionally, someone with different looks will win. And if you bother to read up on the contest rules, they clearly specify that the contest is not only about looks. A come on, she is a cute girl, but neither she nor any of there fellow contestants were all that in my opinion, so if was only about looks, the entire slate failed. Which is not to say any of them are ugly, far from it. But the most beautiful girls in Japan? Not by a long shot.
@fordhouse8b
@fordhouse8b 3 месяца назад
@@rikudou947 YOU missed the point. The pageant represents Japanese nationals, as in Japanese citizens, not Japanese nationals with ‘pure’ Japanese DNA. It is right in the contest rules. 1. must be a Japanese national. 2. Must be unmarried. This is the group she must represent. She is a part of that group, so by definition, she falls within the acceptable range of looks for the purposes and goals of this contest. The rules of the game define what looks are acceptable, and the rules of the game say she is eligible to compete. What document produced by the pageant organizers are you citing that specifies that she does not meet the prerequisites for the contest? The organizers let her compete, so clearly she met whatever prerequisites they decided on, which they have the sole discretion to set.

"No matter how long she's been in Japan, she's not really Japanese." If you shared that sentiment about a racial minority in the US, you'd get cancelled immediately. But I can understand why a racially homogenous country like Japan would thank this way. "I think your upbringing is more important than your looks." Agreed. I think if the winner was Asian but non-Japanese, this would be much less of a story because she might be perceived as more Japanese-passing compared to someone non-Asian. "Japanese people have Japanese blood. A foreigner who comes to Japan isn't really Japanese." This is the same guy that said earlier in the interview that all it takes to be considered Japanese is to possess "Samurai Spirit." Talk about being a walking contradiction.

Can't really compare US and Japan. They are two entirely different countries. The US (like Canada) was founded on the idea (although not always living up to) that anyone from anywhere could be American. A nation that started out immigrants from Europe. For Japan, that is a new idea. So, I think Japan can kind get away with this mindset for now. I still hold that black/asian people in Europe are not really European. Does this make me a racist?
