This video has a couple essential inaccuracies. The country was closed as a result of the first black ships, Portuguese slavers who used missionary work as a cover to kidnap Japanese women and children to sell as sex slaves. And the peace that came after the country was closed was due to the introduction of the sweet potato. Before the sweet potato Japan would go into a massive civil war everytime there was a rice famine. But the sweet potato made it so people had food even during rice famines.

Some Japanese yts said also that they were also open to Chinese trade in that time. However, idk the accuracy.

Canada's point of view on the two world wars is pretty much Europe-focused. WW1 is barely taught (at least where I went to school), we pretty much just learn basic things like the first uses of chemical weapons, the battles our country is famous for fighting (like Vimy Ridge), etc. WW2 is usually taught with a heavy emphasis on the European theatre while also ignoring a lot of the contribution done by the USSR during that conflict. Many fellow Canadians I've talked to think that the most important battle of the war was D-day, ignoring the fact that the USSR had already won the war on the Eastern front a year before that and Italy had already basically been defeated by then and Japan was losing every engagement with America by that time.

This video he was watching sure does give false impressions. For example, the US was NOT working on the A-bomb prior to the war, and they did not drop it because they wondered if it would work. Japan would not surrender and the estimates of the death toll for invading the Japanese home islands was a million Americans and at least a million Japanese. The A-bombs ended the war with less than 120,000 killed.
@wwoods66
@wwoods66 3 года назад
Minor disagreements: Einstein's letter to Roosevelt was in 1939, though not much happened until the fall of '41. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Project#Origins The bombs directly killed about 120k when they were dropped, but about 100k more were mortally wounded by burns and injuries.
@michaelbrininstool4515
@michaelbrininstool4515 3 года назад
@@wwoods66 The letter was to inform Roosevelt of what was possible, and that the Germans were working on a bomb. It urged stockpiling uranium. That was pretty much as far as it went. "On 9 October 1941, President Roosevelt approved the atomic program .." which was to figure out how to stockpile uranium in case we ever needed to make bombs.. 18 Dec 1941, "Work was proceeding on three different techniques for isotope separation to separate uranium-235 from the more abundant uranium-238." "The scientists at the (July 1942) Berkeley conference envisioned creating plutonium in nuclear reactors where uranium-238 atoms absorbed neutrons that had been emitted from fissioning uranium-235 atoms. At this point no reactor had been built, and only tiny quantities of plutonium were available from cyclotrons at institutions such as Washington University in St. Louis.[27] Even by December 1943, only two milligrams had been produced." Sounds to me no bomb was being worked on yet, even by mid-1942. Late 1942 is when the government started purchasing land upon which to produce fissionable material and begin testing. The war was on-going by that time. the 120,000 dead includes by burns and injuries. See www.atomicarchive.com/resources/documents/med/med_chp10.html
@wwoods66
@wwoods66 3 года назад
@@michaelbrininstool4515 I guess it depends on what you're counting as "working on the A-bomb". "the 120,000 dead includes by burns and injuries." That number is a lot lower than I've seen elsewhere. But from the same website, "in an instant 80,000 to 140,000 people were killed [in Hiroshima] and 100,000 more were seriously injured." and "Of the 286,000 people living in Nagasaki at the time of the blast, 74,000 people were killed and another 75,000 sustained severe injuries." www.atomicarchive.com/history/atomic-bombing/index.html Radiation Effects Research Foundation's estimated "number of acute (within two to four months) deaths": 150k-246k www.rerf.or.jp/en/faq/
@michaelbrininstool4515
@michaelbrininstool4515 3 года назад
@@wwoods66 Hmm, that article contradicts itself with the numbers.Even at the highest number, 246k, that is 1/4 to 1/10th what the expected deaths were for a full-on invasion. By not working on the bomb, the fact that a few scientists were confident a bomb was possible in late-1941, tells me they could not have been working on it yet.

@TheAnaemag

@@peppexdperr - each country nuances how they write their own history, depending on the era. For example, before the 1989 Romanian revolution (I'm from Romania) we were learning how fortunate we were because of all the "mother Russia" support and how we were communists, which was the greatest, all the accomplishments of the regime, etc. Now we adapted how the history is presented, but I am sure that there are still things we do not portray accurately. So for sure there is that, but from what I have seen on youtube and read (just as an interested party, I am not an expert, far from it) the things are a bit complicated when it comes to the war damages/crimes that the Japanese caused (China, Korea, and all the islands they conquered) and especially the treatment towards prisoners of war (POW's). There are more reactions videos to this, some by history teachers/students (here are 2 I found quite informative ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DcegSE_McKg.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xv412DVVz4k.html). And if you want to know more about the post-war reactions, here is another clarifying one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lnAC-Y9p_sY.html Sorry for the rather long comment, my most recent "rabbit hole" I've fallen into is Japan-adjacent, hence the increased interest and multiple recommendations. Best!
