I can’t remember who I heard it from but there’s a phrase about language learning that has helped me contextualize a lot: “French is not English with French words”. Basically you can’t just do word for word replacement in a sentence and expect it to work. Different languages have different morphologies and syntax structures and you have to account for that. Internalizing that helped me tremendously in learning Latin and especially Ancient Greek and it’s helping me a lot now that I’m learning Japanese.
