Japanese "Sunglasses Buddha" Train Crossing Story ★ ONLY in JAPAN

When a train crossing meets an 18 meter tall Buddha statue 150 meters away, the scene comes together to make a very unique image. From the right angle, the horizontal red signals line up to make a pair of goggles or sunglasses for the Colossal Buddha of Hotei in Konan city near Nagoya along the Meitetsu Inuyama Line.
I visited the spot for a day and spoke with Dr David Maeda, the owner of the Daibutsu about its construction, its importance to the area and the challenges he faces with owning such a massive statue today.

Imagine being one of the first people to notice the "sunglasses". You're at this cemetery, visiting a passed loved one, feeling a bit melancholy, and you look up for a moment to see this huge Buddha with a pair of flashing red shades. It'd feel like the big guy himself were trying to cheer you up.

Japan was in a rapid shift and boom during that time you wouldn't have understand what the heck was going on. Think you visited Japan in 1954 then again in 1984 you would say seeing that this isn't Japan. Yes, being in Japan during mid-50s to mid-80s was the greatest thing you could do cuz this is the period when japan shifted from the poverty and starving condition to condition of ?? Well, you know the answer.🇯🇵🇯🇵

Love it! Such a fun and quirky thing and definitely “Only in Japan” 🙃 ... I love the history John, I was thinking how good it was looking and that they did a great job in building it, but then you showed us the close up and the challenges they face... maybe crowd funding can help, it would be sad to see it go, but also kind of amazing it’s stood for so long. Thanks again John!

Dr. Maeda speaks great English. Also its crazy to see how the Buddha was erected in open fields, and half a century later its still standing but surrounded by so much infrastructure. Maybe Dr. Maeda can gift the statue to the city, and have it maintained after his passing.
