I was in the Marines over there. Front line unit. Was my section going to a temporary log base, forgot what for, a Marine yell up at me in the turret: “Hey, you guys want some desert boots?” I said “Yeah!” So I get my section parked and we go over to this tent, I get the section over and the guy says: “OK, we have 13R and 7 W Those are all we had left!” I got PISSED! We’d been over there 3 or 4 months by then and you get really work up working 24/7, out in the sand. Night patrols etc. We almost tore those guys up. I said “Let’s get out of here before something happens!” I’m back up in the turret and I see all the POGS walking around in desert boots! Oh, that’s why they only have two ridiculous sizes left! We all had jungle boots on, like myself or black boots. The guys in the rear with the gear got first dibs on everything. Better food, water, candy from home. Real desert boots. And the guys headed N to do the fighting get the scraps! I suppose all wars are like that.

Very nice. I myself run a Gulf War US Army 82nd Airborne kit. Still need a real PASGT helmet, a large ALICE ruck with frame, and M17A1 gas mask, though. Update for those who care- Got myself the real PASGT helmet, large ALICE ruck, and a few other things like an E-Tool cover. I also got an M16A2, finally. Right now all I need is the Gas Mask/Hood, NBC Suit, and night desert gear (probably just a Parka).

Good video. Really a eye opener. Seems the gear US troops were bit of a mix. I saw photographs where M1 steel helmets were used in some cases with desert or woodland covers I think. But yeah the gear was certainly mixed a bit. But very interesting.

the national guard goes to army basic with active troops, the alice gear around 2007-2010 was due to the surge and basic training units not being alloted newer gear. if you enlist today youll probably get issued a mix of UCP and multicam while in basic.
