Jaron Lanier is one of the foremost digital visionaries of our times. One of Silicon Valley’s key early innovators, this dreadlocked digital prophet has been dubbed the ‘father of virtual reality’ and named as one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world.
A former goatherd and midwife, and a virtuoso player of rare instruments, Lanier is sometimes called the ‘alternative Steve Jobs’. Neither a tech optimist nor a doom-monger, he is unique for always seeing the opportunities offered by technology as well as the dangers. In bestsellers such as You Are Not A Gadget and Who Owns the Future? he sounded an early warning about the perils of the internet - describing the tech giants as ‘spy agencies’ and ‘lords of the clouds’ for the way they reduce the value of humans to that of the data they provide. But he has also proposed another, more imaginative way to use technology. A ‘human-centered approach’, he argues, ‘leads to more interesting, more exotic, more wild, and more heroic adventures than the machine-supremacy approach, where information is the highest goal.’
Now Lanier is going back to the field where he did his pioneering work in the 1980s: virtual reality. VR has become the new frontier of human engagement with tech, and has become a medium that has transformed surgical trials, aircraft design and the treatment of injured war veterans. But it is not only about design, games and headsets, as he argues in his new book, Dawn of the New Everything. Virtual reality can extend the ‘intimate magic’ of childhood into the adult world, Lanier says, and allow us to imagine life beyond the limits of biology. But it will also test who we are. In the same way that he foresaw the dangers of web 2.0, Lanier offers a warning. Virtual reality has the potential to isolate us from each other - and render us even more in thrall to predatory tech companies.

this guy is great, because you can tell that he could explain things a lot more descriptive, but that would make it more complicated to understand, so he talks in a way that the layman can know what he's saying.

I have to disagree with Lanier in one point. And that is that VR can harm people outside of the view point that a central manipulating system is wired to this problem. What I'm talking about is the same problem a lot of gamers find themselfs in. It's about escapeism and personal problems and drepression. People will abuse the VR to escape reality like for example plaing world of warcraft to escape the harsh reality the may otherways have to face.

I love this guy. He's right about everything. But I'm not optimistic like him. Most people aren't willing to hear this at all. They don't want to believe they are being manipulated. I believe we are being manipulated and I have deleted my Facebook and Twitter, and have lost many "friends" in the process, who are not willing to communicate any other way. But I can't yet bring myself to do the same with RU-vid or Instagram. Even knowing and believing these things are not good for our lives, it's hard to follow through.
@yogini326
@yogini326 6 лет назад
I have a hard time imaging how I will engage with the digital world if I give up my social media accounts. They seem to be the trajectory point for all my online interaction and content consumption. If I don't engage with Facebook, Twitter, IG, and RU-vid, how do I connect easily and efficiently? This is what I struggle to understand. I think the answer may be to simply, 'jump ship' and the answer may present itself. Super interesting stuff in this video.

yes. Years ago, when I first ran into FB, I joined. I left it entirely shortly thereafter and never joined Twitter or any other. I do not like any of it. There is too much going on there that I feel is destructive, and not just the "manipulation". People get too unreal there for me. Integrity and real sharing is too meaningful to me. Life is too short to give up that part of us and others.
@JoeSegal
@JoeSegal 5 лет назад
I agree. Trying to give up social media is like trying to quit sugar or cocaine. Suggesting others do so is like suggesting a sugar or cocaine addict go cold turkey. I'm wondering if AR Augmented Reality might allow people to put down our phones and at least make eye contact with each other while still accessing the world of data and digital engagement?

In the 80s, it was a 'sweet' way of looking at life. Great convo! It wasn't about total global domination for profit back then. Indeed, advertising vs controlling behavior. It was originally fair. Good intentions turned into switches for predictable outcomes. Where is a free society when there are those that monitor and attempt to influence our every behavior? Agree, we become smarter, we evolve, adjust, and see through the illusion. We enjoy magicians, knowing the set up. Again, great conversation and food for thought!

We’ve been able to live without social media, phones and computers so why wouldn’t we be able to stop or ignore one of these “Tools”? I used to love social media and thought that social media is something good i truly did. Until the point where it became negative towards me and ways it did terrified me. Today i don’t use any social media tool except Facebook’s messenger app and Twitter because these apps and media are fine with me, Twitter for example is to me a way of interacting with news that interest me and that’s it, i don’t use it for anything else. And Facebook’s messenger app is only for communication with those who are closest to me and those who are involved in my life. However Facebook in particular as I mentioned easier terrified me in ways you can’t even imagine and let me give you an example of it, i could go on Facebook and like or comment on something and then a few hours later experience these things in real life either from ads, people or even inside me. It’s almost as if i experienced a virtual reality of the things i did on social media IRL. This is also linked to having the feeling of being tracked and exposed and to try to understand how this all could be really used to be really traumatizing and terrifying and that’s the main reason to why I’ve removed close to all social media overall. And yes i have Twitter and Facebook’s messenger still but these social medias is something can use without feeling these unexplainable things happening to me. I don’t sit and scroll any social media at all nowadays and I’m glad to say that I’m not experiencing any of these severe signs anymore I’m also feeling free and less stressed out since i stopped using social media and overall i feel more confident in myself without social media however i will never forget these really scary sensations that occurs in real life because of something that i did on social media. My advice to those who’ve read and can relate to me in any way shape or form is to stop using social media completely and never come back to those that makes you feel really bad about yourself or threatening to you like they’ve done to me. There is no need to scroll endlessly on social media or post everything we do in our lives, yes we are all addicted to expressing ourselves in a good way and love to accomplish things and post your pride all over the Internet and in real life as well but the important thing I’m trying to tell you is that you don’t actually need to do anything in terms of progress in your life some things are best to keep to yourselves and your family. Just try to stop using social media completely for a period of time and see if you get something out of it. Thank you.

Re: math sites. I can’t remember the specific names but they were mentioned in his first book [You Are Not A Gadget]. I read his first two books this past summer.
