Speaker/Performer: Jaron Lanier
Sponsors: CITRIS (Ctr for Info Technology Research in the Interest of Society), Berkeley Center for New Media, CITRIS Data and Democracy Initiative
Jaron Lanier's scientific interests include biomimetic information architectures, user interfaces, heterogeneous scientific simulations, advanced information systems for medicine, and computational approaches to the fundamentals of physics. He collaborates with a wide range of scientists in fields related to these interests.
Lanier's name is also often associated with Virtual Reality research. He either coined or popularized the term 'Virtual Reality' and in the early 1980s founded VPL Research, the first company to sell VR products. In the late 1980s he led the team that developed the first implementations of multi-person virtual worlds using head mounted displays, for both local and wide area networks, as well as the first "avatars," or representations of users within such systems. While at VPL, he and his colleagues developed the first implementations of virtual reality applications in surgical simulation, vehicle interior prototyping, virtual sets for television production, and assorted other areas. He led the team that developed the first widely used software platform architecture for immersive virtual reality applications. Sun Microsystems acquired VPL's seminal portfolio of patents related to Virtual Reality and networked 3D graphics in 1999.
From 1997 to 2001, Lanier was the Chief Scientist of Advanced Network and Services, which contained the Engineering Office of Internet2, and served as the Lead Scientist of the National Tele-immersion Initiative, a coalition of research universities studying advanced applications for Internet2. The Initiative demonstrated the first prototypes of tele-immersion in 2000 after a three-year development period. From 2001 to 2004 he was Visiting Scientist at Silicon Graphics Inc., where he developed solutions to core problems in telepresence and tele-immersion. He was Scholar at Large for Microsoft from 2006 to 2009, and Partner Architect at Microsoft Research from 2009 forward.
Lanier has received honorary doctorates from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Franklin and Marshall College, was the recipient of CMU's Watson award in 2001, was a finalist for the first Edge of Computation Award in 2005, and received a Lifetime Career Award from the IEEE in 2009 for contributions to Virtual Reality.

He is indeed fascinating and has great insight and predictions regarding how the world and human nature will change because of technology. I hope he does more lectures and gets more media opportunities. So many people are getting hooked into a trap that is very unhealthy for the human race. Addiction to media, and relinquishing privacy in a deep and intimate way is not a good thing, it leaves us extremely vulnerable and open to manipulation.

This man clearly has an exceptional moral and ethical compass. To be in the thick of this world, to have pioneered and benefited hugely from it, and yet, be able to understand and warn the rest of us other downfall and propose alternatives, is remarkable. His book 'Who Owns the Future' should be mandatory school text. Lanier is as brilliant as he is benevolent. I appreciate him immensely.

We have here a brilliant and innovative mind and someone yells "times up". That tells me more about our rigid system than anything else. Allow Mr. Lanier to speak as long as he wants. Mr. Lanier had more good ideas per minute than most people have in a lifetime. The idea (borrowed) that we all should have royalties from our individual efforts is a human promoting idea. I am humbled.

Yeh I agree, everyone uses 1984 and Brave New World all the time as a comment on today's society... The machine stops is way, way way more prescient. 1984 was about propaganda, Brave New World is like a projection of Aldous Huxley's feelings about the lower orders. But, when I read The Machine Stops, wow... THAT'S a warning

this is a very interesting debate. I would not have seen this post if it was not for the free internet, yet I can see Jaron's point. It has been known through history that it benifits the minority to keep the majority uneducated, that way they can make more money without the majority asking questions. The biggest earners do not deserve the money. Jaron does make a good point to spread that wealth. My question is would the poorest of people have known about this without free information?

"My question is would the poorest of people have known about this without free information?" I think the point is that the free information and the concentration of power go together. The "free information" is the product. Without the "free information" there wouldn't have been a problem for the people to know about (though of course there would have been different problems).

There is no intrinsic reason that the illusion of experience must be itself an experience. That thinking presupposes the existence of experience that would be rendered unnecessary by the illusion of experience. It could very well be that "experience" doesn't exist at all and that our belief in experience is a byproduct of conflating percieved reality with shared objective reality and that our "experience" of being "us" and looking out into the world is not unique but very common. How would we know? We only think humans in general "experience" things because we can communicate our sensory illusions to one another.

@@Hands2HealNow The difference is subtle but important. The Open Source movement, just believes in open source software as a technical, software engineering method because it means they can generally make software better, faster and more efficiently. The Free Software Foundation on the other hand is a political movement. They believe software should be Free because they believe non-free software is unethical and affront to personal freedom. They believe all software should be free not because it usually results in technically superior software but because people should have power over their own computing. Essentially it kills the EULA/ULA by giving the users the ability to use in whatever fashion they deem necessary. The underlying foundation is pretty incredible if you pick it apart to it's most fundamental level. The concept in and of itself makes it nearly impossible to use a platform to oppress a group of people.

I'll help some people out to bridge some concepts of some of Jaron's observation concepts. 1. The "skyscraper" is of a design built on "good intentions" that is not sharing but drawing it's top structure from it's foundation. This is unsustainable, but how can it not know this in the epitome of it's design end function? So it either intends to basically share structural stability below, or it intends to decouple, or as the realist may already see, it may collapse. 2. The "1%" of super-rich individuals are part of that "skyscraper" and their wealth is denominated in the system ultimately digitally. They enjoy the illusion of ownership, but it is the super-corporate body that ultimately is the beneficiary and authority. The basic concept of actual "sharing" is unknown to the parts of this system design and it's fundamental analog is already in the human nature as greed with no bounds of control, and no social conscience to dictate that most fundamental "love of neighbor". It is love of money that empowers the whole engine and the only solution that becomes necessary when the "skyscraper" allows part of itself to crash to the depths below, but the super-corporate body disengages entirely for the "new world". Thus Jaron's simplistic but accurate overview has a yet simple fundamental at work regardless of what age of humanity one applies it. The "atom" still dictates the nature of the brick of lead or gold. The predatory nature of the human is amplified in the personality of the corporate matrix, and allows "good people" to be used to that end, removed by layers of functionality (and complexity) that obscure the role of the individual human nature, a creative destruction eventually sums to zero. The "network" reboots on a new operating system. The coming decade will see the final exponentiation of the process, the OS is world government and the "retirement" of the now unneeded masses aided by advanced technology and uni-polar global authority of the "super corporation" and it's own algorithm to remove it's only threat in unneeded humanity. The ultimate "anti-virus". The optimism of the parts allows the sum of the whole to not be recognized for what it is. Any human in the whole is expendable, some more quickly than others who naturally must be replaced. The alternative corporate matrices "personalty" is already "singular", it just needs the final phase. The corporation is the immortal entity. Or so it thinks. Speaking the algorithmic truth means less speaking engagements. Accepting it requires a certain fearlessness by some greater understanding. Thus the "truth", the summary, is never given, but various idealized impossibilities are the "summary" of the matter. "Alls good" the nature of the atom will change from lead to gold overnight somehow rectifying the fundamental error in human self-design.

I think, although I aint that clever, it's the other way round. If we had paid google for search then they wouldn't have been able to justify the data mining which leads to the concentration of wealth that leads to the problem. The Idea about paying people for their data is a proposition of a solution after the fact, as they have decided to mine all this data, perhaps they should pay us for it, facilitating a redistrubution of wealth. But as I say I may well be wrong, I'm yet to read the book, I've just seen a few lectures on the topic.
@templelijah3524
@templelijah3524 9 лет назад
It's called "sharing" and not actually doing it in my opinion. It's the lie inherent in forsaking the premise. But the final human modelling (for profit) is what is completing in the process to fuel the final stage properly. Thus with scientific certainty people fuel their own crash, and the controlled crash gives birth to the new OS and system purge of the "virus".

They'd pay us via micro-payments. You'd also be sending micro-payments to Google in other contexts. Meanwhile you'd be giving out these micro-payments to other individuals every time you downloaded a song or used someone's photograph and at the same time they might be sending them back to you. His understanding of economy is minimal. Increased automatic translation making translators unemployed is actually very similar to how the industrial revolution "spinning jenny" machines affected the economy (fewer weavers in short run but better living standards in the long run). The concerns he voices about some individuality being lost as being bad is also questionable because humans were more group oriented in the stone age. Hence reduced individualism in USA society might make USA society a better place not worse.
@alanshteynberg8313
@alanshteynberg8313 8 лет назад
+rolfstenholm Please look at what you just said; 'fewer weavers but better living standards'... That implies that many weavers were replaced with fewer weavers, however that is NOT the same thing we're encountering today. Today, the human is left out of the picture entirely. When you weaved, you received formal compensation. When you make an account on Facebook and feed them data that they turn and profit on, you are NOT receiving any formal compensation, thus leaving the human component entirely out of the picture. I think it's simply too naive and even irresponsible to compare today's employment shifts to those that transpired during the Luddite era.

Is this really true, or is it yet just another attempt to rationalize that which benefits a few at the expense of many? How do people who have no jobs purchase anything? The ruling class will thrust us into a war most likely to get rid of the workers it no longer has a use for.. because it is the only trick they know. People simply rationalize.. but if you are rationalizing that it is good for you to have more fish, and you net so many that they can't replenish themselves then your greed will cause you to starve. That's exactly what is happening. Overfishing. It isn't possible for anyone to compete with supercomputers. If it was your income at stake, and you were living in the street no doubt you would have a different attitude.

People forget that the class system began with 'class'. Destroying it leads to one big low class who dislike copyright because they're uncreative, & won't get how the world became one big grubby squat.

Credit card companies can predict to the day, what dollar amount, and what product you will purchase a year in advance. That's not a short term thing. The big data algorithm would see the table and estimate your hand would touch it, land there for approximately 2.4 seconds, and then predict you pick your nose and scratch your ass a day ahead of time and be accurate within milliseconds of you doing it. No, it can't do everything but you are WRONG about the incredible power of big data, machine learning, and these new algorithms.

If you have to judge someone on their appearance/style in order to receive a brilliant message then you might want to adjust your priorities.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VSH9gOqevRc.html sounds like Downtown Nashville, TN late night when Metro Police are harassing some little dark skin teens drumming on buckets (street performers) instead of the half naked guy 6 feet away bumming for money or info (same thing these days)
