3 Gripen went up against 5 F16 at Red flag. Gripen was the aggressor and F16 had the home field advantage with ground to air defence. After 3 rounds the kill-score was 5-0 5-0 5-1 in favour of Gripen.

@@whalehands The turn rate of the gripen is better than the F16. The only thing that the F16 really has that is better is thrust to weight. Though the gripen makes up for this a bit by having less drag than the F16.

Well the f16 first flight was in 74. The j39 first flight was 88. I honestly would have been surprised if the j39 had done poorly. Saab has always been close to the US in fighter design so given 12 years more of development it’s not surprising.

To correctly model the 39 you'd need tailor-made control algorithms as the aircraft uses all control surfaces available to achieve the input command from the pilot. This means for example that the airbrake on one side could be used in some situations when rudder input is given and the FCS deem it efficient to augment the rudder with it. The FCS can also point the nose in a desired direction briefly to achieve a firing solution, very useful when you need to get a quick firing solution in a fight like this, or if you want to strafe ground targets without losing altitude. None of the special capabilities of the 39 are possible to model in DCS. Only SAAB really knows how this machine behaves in the air. :-) Example: The situation @12:45 the 39 could go extremely high-alpha and achieve a firing solution. At the cost of a tremendous amount of induced drag, but it matters little if you end the fight with the maneuver.

@@flashfire157 I mean that can be said for both of them, the Gripens flight computer is more like the F22s (that will say it will use whatever surface is most efficient to make the plane do it’s thing) and it maxes out at 12G, but Swedish Gripens have outperformed Norwegian F16s in practice

@@Cuccos19Each round would take less than a minute to end. JF 17 is not at the level of F 16 and Gripen bro. China developed it for mostly smaller third world air forces with limited budget, and it couldn't enter the Chinese Air Force itself. How can it compete with F 16 and Gripen? The ones that can't afford Typhoon, Rafale, Gripen, Su 35 or F 16 will go for that.

China has lots of Chengdu J7, Shenyang J 8, and I guess Nanchang Q5 too, if JF 17 is cheap and good, why not replace the outdated fighters, especially when it is trying to get more powerful, and as it counters USA, the oldest fighter USA has is older F15 and F16, who are tons better then J7.

Realworld, the Gripen has a cost per flighthour around 1/3 of the F-16 and a readiness, ie flighthours per day at around 2-4 times(airforce "normal" also matters). Groundservice team of 1 techie and 6 conscripts. IIRC, the F-16 needs 8 techies or something(don't quote me on that though, long time since i read about that).

It also has a lot more nose authority. I think the American engineers are doing fine considering countries around the world buy even their used aircraft. Also the F16 is still in service and has even been updated with modern avionics and weaponry. Lower your voice.

@@chickenjonte_the Gripen E specifically for its higher than advertised operating costs (SAAB frequently advertises a CPFH of 4,700 USD), low payload capacity, and horrible thrust to weight. TL;DR I think it's the most overhyped fighter ever. In my opinion it's only redeeming qualities is the Meteor and it's Radar.

F16 has big problems against Gripen. That has been tested many times in training dog fights, for example in red flag. Also tested against Norway who has a lot of F16. This quote from globaldefence: "And no disrespect to any other fighters, including Norwegian pilots because they’re just as well trained, but during a combat exercise with the Royal Norwegian Air Force, 3 Swedish Gripens went up against 5 RNAF F-16’s. The Result was 5-0, 5-0, 5-1 after having flown 3 rounds."

It brings the problem of modern missiles,,even latest aim9x lack of throttle control,,still full powered once it launched.The relative speed is too high that turning rate of missile can't catch up.Think that if one day missile can adjust throttle to match up it's optimized turning rate profile automatically.

Love your video's & was hoping you could let me know what is the best equipment for new players for DCS, like VR headsets & joystick & other stuff, I would love to see your fancy pilot shit lol in a British Raf Tornado vs F-4 Phantom & to see what was the best during the time in the Raf era. every dogfight video should see the pilots switch places and do the same ammount of fights in opposite aircraft so that pilot differences is set aside!

What I’ve understood from comments made by pilots that flewn the Gripen. The Gripen has a noticably more effective turn, bleeding less airspeed through high alfa, giving it a much better sustained turn rate. Pilots say the Gripen ’cuts through the air’ in a way other aircraft dont. I don’t know how much the canard configuration has to do with it. Even though the Viper is 20 years older than the Gripen, the Viper have a more powerful engine and better power to weight ratio. The Viper pilots should be able to find a way…

Its the canards, they inducing a vortex that is flowing over the main wings that will make the wing more efficient at high alpha. It is basically a big leading edge extension that is also a control surface, thus making it quite effective. And the thrust to weight ratio should be thrust to weight and drag ratio, the drag will also play a big role when pulling high g maneuvers, so the gripen can still outmaneuver a more powerful t/w fighter like the F-16. I think it will struggle in the vertical climbing, but that don’t seems to happen to often. A gripen pilot told me, if I recall it correctly, that the gripen have only 25% of the drag compared to a F-16 when doing a 9g turn.

Gripen has much lower drag, offsetting the lower thrust-to-weight.

the IRIS-T (InfraRed ImagingSystem Thrustvectored) is a german / european missile, very high-tech, they even claim it to be better than a 9X.

They're both thrust-vectored, and from what I understand their seekers are almost identical. I don't think there's any measurable difference between a 9X and an IRIS-T. Now, the Meteor is a different story. The U.S. will likely have to field the AIM-260 (a few years away) before it can claim to be on the same or better level with a BVR missile.

@@VisibilityFoggy they are very close, i've been to Diehl Defence, details are classified. the 9X uses a 128x128 infrared sensor and the IRIS-T has just 2x128 but it uses some sort of mirror array which supposedly reduces active laser jamming. and the datalink in the IRIS-T is newer, so also better? other than that i don't know any more specifics.

Hey yes GS for all these boss fights can you do 3 each swapping planes? You're very experienced in DCS. It's hard to tell if it's a plane or a pilot thing.
