Hoarding has become acknowledged as a distinct psychological disorder since Jasmine Harman tackled her own family's hoarding issues in the documentary, "My hoarder Mum & Me."
However, in this documentary, she meets some of Britain's biggest hoarders, living secret double lives riddled with shame while scrapping through almost unlivable conditions at home.

I was a environmental health inspector for a major metropolitan city about 2002-2009 and we would get calls on hoarders frequently. This was not recognized as a psychological disorder back then. It was so tragic to witness. I am glad this is now recognized as a real compulsion. Our city would literally haul the hoard away right in front of the hoarder's eyes if the hoarder didn't make progress. They would literally break down as they watched their belongings being taken away. No matter how many warnings the hoarder would be given, the person simply could not let go of even a small portion of their belongings...even on the threat of losing it all. Everyone in my department understood that the hoarders were disturbed and needed help, but their was no help for them then. This series is so compassionate and helpful. Thank you.

my sister did that to me. my room was a disaster and i wouldnt clean it up so she threw every thing out. thanks to that im sure i would be worse off. i tell people i have hoarder tenancies and if i am not careful i could become a full blown one

@Moon Teller I know of a woman who lost her children to it. The authorities were so punitive of her. They harrass and hound these poor mothers. It's horrible. The treated her like she was doing it on purpose. I don't condone children living in such a state but child welfare needs to start educating themselves on this disorder. By removing the children and not treating the disorder, you're making it worse and tearing a family apart for nothing.

@S D forcing them accomplishes nothing, they will just gather a new hoard. You need to treat the underlying psychological condition, not just deal with the junk.

I swear that elderly man is the loveliest person I've seen yet on the show, he's so well spoken and intelligent...and he's got that razor sharp wit, he had me laughing several times. I swear I could listen to him talk for hours. IT really goes to show that it isn't a problem with intelligence that causes hoarding, it's emotional and it can happen to anybody.

Tisha Kenney My brother hoarded because of his, alcoholism, but before he became a heavily drinker, nothing like that happened in his life.

She treats them like the people they are: worthwhile, wonderful, complex human beings. She doesn't treat them like they're disgusting or the scum of society because they're not. I love how Jasmine gets to their story and takes the time to just let them talk. She really, genuinely cares.

I think because she's lived with it and she knows how stressful it can be for the hoarder to even think about getting rid of things, so she's interested in the person (at least it seems to me) rather than just focusing on the disorder

it's actually a health hazard going in there. you can get legionnaires disease, alzheimer, cancer, all sort of infections, respiratory infections. 16:41 you can see the amount of shit growing on the floor that he's kicking up with the vacuum.

He's perfectly correct. Are you familiar with the theory of depressive realism? We know from clinical studies that people who are depressed show markedly superior judgement to those who are not depressed at tasks like estimating whether a given shape will fit a given hole. The implication is that depression just removes a filter which makes the world seem irrationally pleasant for everyone else. If there's such a thing as happiness, I certainly have never experienced it. I've felt cessation of pain, the absence of misery, and satisfaction of certain biological drives like hunger and the need to sneeze, but I'm 50 years old and I've never experienced what people pretend is "joy." If you look inside yourself, you'll see I'm right. People pretend that they're "happy" simply because everyone else around there is doing the same thing.

The thing about Jasmine is she respects these people, she honors their humanity, she listens. That's why she's effective. She really burrows down to the real root of the problem. There are deep problems underlying this behavior.

I kind of find Jeff's taste in hoarding items charming. Some people choose soda cans or straight up garbage but his is books and the rolls and pretty pieces of wood. I know it's bad but it reflects his wonderful taste and personality. He's so sweet.

@anonymous reviewer Yeah, that's just way too far for anyone to let anything get that bad and gross. It's straight up a bio-hazard,a health concern and you're just asking for a ton of bad concoctions to happen. I understand people have issues and problems including myself and everyone does. But,I don't care what you've or what's going on,if you live like that then don't ever let children come anywhere near that place for many reasons but health and safety concerns first and foremost. They also don't need to be living on their own at all if they let their fridge and food get like that. They just don't. It's very sad but you're clearly not capable of taking care of yourself or your home anymore if you live like this or think it's safe and also don't see a major problem with it. For their own sake and safety,go to a nursing home or some kind of elderly living facility. It's also putting people that live around you in harm's way and there is no telling what is coming from that house or what is in that house due to the massive neglect.

I understand the mindset of 87 year old lady . She thinks of recycling and then making money out of it and then donate it . That's how their generation think instead of discarding things in trash. And avoid waste generation unlike present generation

Don't bet on it. Many people know exactly where everything is. Those types of tricks just upset them and make the hoarding worse. If you just empty out a hoarder's stuff without their permission, it gets replaced with more incredibly quickly. That's not the solution. You have to deal with the mental illness and cognitive problems that are causing the problem.

My mum used to send me on school camp for this exact reason, so she could throw out my hoard, and yes I honestly never noticed. But she would only do like, one shelf or little bits and pieces. And when I tried to dehoard myself, I was throwing a garbage bag per shelf out (never had as much as they do on these shows, I always had floor space)

Agree. I did that with a relative, she never noticed. She could just block the mess out. If you pointed it out she'd get defensive then go into victim mode. It was easier just to clear bits that way, as she was unsteady & it was a trip & fire hazard.

As a former therapist what you are doing is just perfect. the fact that you have first hand experience is so comforting. my schizophrenic brother is a hoarder, he ruined my father's house. i miss my mum like mad. she was a lot like yoursthey would have got on very well. it's really lovely to see someone who loves their very very lovely mum, so much. I feel like the marketing industry also hold some blame. The amount of algorithms and psychological research going into telling us we need things is definitely a contributing factor. It’s certainly not the only thing at play but it’s definitely not helping.

Advertising is as old as dirt, years ago it was radio then tv and then one day somebody realized that hey this new fangled homeless carriage is really catching on, why not post signs along the roads telling those drivers about new and wonderful products, the billboard was born, then who could forget the infamous Burma shave signs. Everywhere you go there is advertising, notice that a lot of these people are not tech savvy, a main part of a hoarders hoard are print material, they rely on old magazines books newspapers etc, there isn't a tablet or smartphone to be found. Hoarders aren't interested in the latest gadgets they scavenge garage sales, they pick peoples garbage, flea markets, if you notice most of what they have is household trash. Next time leave your smartphone at home or in your car when you go shopping because the store tracks every item you may pick up and look at as well as what you purchase, there's no getting away from it unless you never put your name to anything ever which is impossible, again the latest gadgets are not what a hoarder is interested in.

I don't want to harp about capitalism, but yes, we are all encouraged to buy buy buy, and if we don't throw it in a landfill, our homes become landfills. I wonder how common this disorder was before mass production? I once read about a pair of wealthy brothers in the 1800s who hoarded, but regular people? 🤔

Jeff reminds me so much of my father. His personality, his history and the fact that items hold him hostage. My father has been gone for a couple of years now and I have to say, a weight has been lifted off me. I know it sounds harsh but it's true. I'm extremely uncomfortable watching Jeff because it rubs raw nerves from within me. I'm 57 and I feel the need to watch this video as therapy. I realize now, it's time to work on ME. Awesome video. Thank you very much for showing the variety of people you've dealt with. This one hit home ❤

I made myself throw out some shoes I couldn't wear any more yesterday. It was HARD. "BUTbutbutbutbutbutbut!!!!!What if you NEED them!?!?!?!?" That part of my brain isn't seeing that a cat has thrown up all over one of them. Or that they don't fit my nerve damaged feet any more. I have new, well fitting shoes now, expensive ones. I don't need the ones I threw out. But I kept them for about a year, just around on the floor. Because, GASP, I couldn't throw out the shoes!!! What if I need them!?!?!?? Yes, it took at least a year to gear myself up to toss the shoes that have no more use. I had to talk myself into it. Because when you hoard, keeping things that have NO MORE USE makes wonderful sense. Because, GOD FORBID, what if you NEED IT!?!?!?!? Hoarding isn't rational or reasonable. But in my head, it seems perfectly reasonable to hold on this crap!!!! But...I tossed them!!!!

Remembering the happy feeling of when we were trowing it away and then today asking yourself why we did it because we were so happy when we bought it. But finaly its gone like it should have been.

Clothing that no longer fits, broken electronics, books already read etc. They're always looking to fill a void in their lives or have experienced trauma and are trying to control a part of their life. -hoarder

I take pictures of things I need to get rid of. Sometimes keeping an image of something is good enough and you can then proceed to throw it away, knowing you still have it - in your camera.

Well, I have used in another way; when I have thrown away husband's mankey item; he gets mad; and I show him photo of soles of house shoes I threw away. Full of holes. Or the hairbrush with barely any bristles left. And I replaced with new ones.

jasmine pours her whole heart and soul into the people she helps and it's absolutely beautiful. you could see the pure pain on her face when jean rejected her help and god, it broke me. she's a truly amazing person inside and out and what she's doing to help these people, working off of her own experience and emotions, is so, so wonderful and so, so admirable. what a kind soul.

Jeff is very dear to my heart. Those who've lived through the great depression were raised in an era that was not a "disposable" society. Recycling or upcycling was nothing new.... it was a way of life. They passed those traits on to the next couple of generations. We FIX or REUSE instead of throw away. Its no winder here's so much task and pollution..... think about it. I'm the same way. Give Jeff a big hug for me, please. ❤

When my mum died my father and brother decided I should be their carer, housecleaner, and main person to do their washing, cleaning and basically everything. I never had time to grieve for my mother. Eight months after working three jobs to get enough money in to pay for my electricity etc. I had my own husband and house to look after but they were so selfish that when I took ill and had dropped to less than 7 stone in weight my husband took me back to my father's house. I met the horror of similar. I met 68 bottles of milk in various levels of decay. Every dish, pot , cutlery item and carry out was piled up to nearly the ceiling. I could not even see out of the window. I remember how I burst into tears and turned to my father who expected me to clean up the mess. I turned round and he said "if you don't like it you know what you can do." Until this day I bless my husband who marched me out away from this. It took such a long time and in honestly, I am now 69 and the horror memories haunt me still. I know I could not ever have done more but my heart and my love for my family was ripped asunder.

My mum made me keep everything I had ever owned till I was 13 in a tiny room until I threw it away and even then she held most of it in the spare room & I hated it so now I have the complete opposite problem I can’t stand stuff & I throw away everything!!

Rebecca kent actually I don’t want a mental emotional attachment to any object including car or furniture or jewelry because I figure it can all be lost stolen or ruined beyond my control. So I’ve willed myself to not care. Only thing I feel an emotional attachment is a flat when I move, I miss the neighborhood, and I miss people.

When Jeff made the decision to keep the 88 pianola rolls and let the 65s go, I recognized an approach I have used myself. When I determined to reduce my fabric stash, I let all the synthetic fabrics go, no matter how lovely they looked. I realized that I never sew up the synthetics, most likely because the feel of them under my hands while I sew them is not pleasant. i have a personality disorder .when jeff said "there's no such thing as hapiness,just the absence of misery",it broke my heart to bits for him because i have that feeling constantly too.i can't bear to see a miserable old man,i just can't,i don't know why.the other protagonists touched me too but jeff is special in my eyes.it hurts to see him hurt like that:(

Both of my grandfathers had passed away before I was born, and my father died at a young age (49). What I wouldn't give to have a gentleman like this one as a foster grandpa. He is just a sweetheart.

Sadly I think that's the only way Jean's horde will get cleared. I find it hard to have sympathy for her because she is using a council flat which she does not need (because she lives with a friend) to store clutter, when it could be used by a family for housing.

@@Londonfogey I find it strange that, as a renter, I get an inspection every 3-6 months from my landlady's agent, but the council doesn't do the same. Council accommodation can be some of the worst abused by tenants and inspections could nip it in the bud.

My mum was a hoarder - who would go to jumble sales and car boot sales every week and bring home bags of items. Some were useless to her and she would make the excuse of wanting to pass them onto other people. It was purchasing the items which gave her a buzz, as well as storing them at home. I understand why she was like this - born in the 1930s, growing up in the war, when clothes were scarce. Then two close family members died untimely deaths, within a few months of each other, so there was a sense of emptiness and loss. It was a pity there was no bereavement counselling or psychotherapy available for her.

The buzz...I think that Tru... it's crazy though how buzz of useless items that my mum won't wear..... she tried buy XXL clothes and pass on to me for pregnancy and it look like parachute .... then tells me give to my mother in law... I would never give her anything... she stopped buying stuff and then picked up recent buying baby clothes, most useful, some random not useful eg sale top for swimming.. no bottom... bizarre pieces on sale and bizarre stuffed animal... if there anything I hate in baby stiff is useless stuffed animals .. we have 100s...I told her this and her brain was like, oh I thought they were in basement or old....I have 4 and 5yr old. ... all stuffed stiff is in bags.. new old.. useless

It's always hard for my mom to throw uncessary things, esp if it has sentimental value. And whenever she attempts to clean, it gets a lot more messier than it is. So sometimes she would go out for days and ask me to clean the entire house. She'd also get mad at me for the things that I threw or donated and she'd say hurtful things, but I just shrug it off, because I'm use to it and she'd forget about it eventually. Maybe if I wasn't there for her. She'd probably end up like this.

Very distressing. So few people could actually afford to have their stuff moved to a warehouse so that they could look through it outside of their home. If one can afford to do that, it seems the best approach. I think people whose parents don't have this problem might think, "Just send in the council clearers, and lock the crazy old people up in a mental institution for the week or two it takes to do it." The problem with that is that I am quite sure that in 90% of the cases, the hoarders will re-fill their homes within a year. But I think the council should have removed Jeff's filthy refrigerator, with or without permission.

Jeff is one of the rare hoarders who is self-aware and realises he has a problem. Notice that at one point he describes himself as a 'recovering hoarder'. Most of the hoarders, like the lady in the tower block, don't seem to make that breakthrough into self awareness.

m lynn Everyone has some clutter, dust is never ending. What you need is a good habit routine. Pick a day that you normally don’t have social activities Example on Wednesday night I dust, clean bathroom, wash the floors.

What I find the most puzzling is that if the things they have, mean SO much to them, howcome they don't take proper care of them. They just stand around rusting and wasting away. It's so strange.

It's a form of OCD. They cannot bear to even throw away trash. People who hoard are controlled by this illness. Most hoarders, with work with a therapist, can change their mindset, but need to have that realization that they're punishing themselves. Others are way too mentally ill and do not have the capacity to understand. I saw this one episode of Hoarders, a programme here in the States, of this one woman who destroyed her home. And she literally went to the bathroom all over the living room. She did not see a problem with it. She continued this disturbing behavior when she was staying with a relative who had a working toilet. She still went to bathroom in cups and left it all over the relative's home before she went back to her nightmare of a house. Needless to say, nothing was saved and the property was condemned. The hoard was collapsing the house.

Poor sweet jeff.. He is lonely. That breaks my heart. I wish there was a website that could connect lonely elderly people with other people to be friends.. somebody make one! Even if they can not do the computer maybe another person could help.. could even just write letters. Better than nothing. People need to care for eachother more. If you see a person who is sad, reach out.. an apt building where somebody lives alone reach out! This woman is providing more than cleaning. She is giving company.

kitty mom in Australia we have an organisation called “do care” and we visit elderly people trapped within their own homes on a weekly basis, all they Ned do is call and ask to be allocated a friend to visit.

He also had the courage to tell his family and he says he's happier! :) I hope the rest of his life is full of friends, gatherings and visits and bright hope for the future. :)

It can be really severe. My brother, bless his heart, hoarded up 3 homes, plus one of his sons', and started on his girlfriend's. I calmly, in a non-judgemental manner, went to one of his places to start helping him while he churned his stuff. I could not wrestle an outdated phonebook from him to recycle it. He said he was saving it for the bonfire of paper he was planning to have. Once he got a good pile of paper together. Once he went through the paper. After he passed, it was an insurmountable mountain for his kids to deal with, because there were valuable items buried in the hoard. Absolutely daunting. Severe, and I'd say it was definately a mental illness.

So True! I am doing it now so my daughter doesn't have to. Plus, we can go through it together. I understood the "bonfire" part cuz I was doing the same thing then realized that it would be a while before I have a fire going so I started throwing it away. When I have a fire going I am sure I will have stuff to burn then too. I stopped thinking what I was going to do in the future to being in the present, will I do it now. If no then it gets out of the house.

I saw an episode of a family who were desperately trying to find the deed to their mom's house and couldn't find it among the hoard. Ultimately, they lost the house since mom didn't keep up with the taxes and the children had no idea.

I watched a video of a antique dealer, go through a hoarders house, after they had passed, the family said just look what you want and make an offer, The dealer made a few note on what he wanted. He later had a chat with family and made them an offer on the full lot, the family accepted and that was it. The dealer removed nearly 10 tons of waste. Which was mad.

35:35 Jeff collected all those machines and was willing to let them go to auction. However the best quality pianola rolls which he started collecting because it was something his ex-wife enjoyed are what he chooses to keep, that's just heart wrenching.

Hoarding is a psychological condition with its roots in trauma. As much as I don’t understand it and would likely not be good with dealing with people who need help but are equally resistant to it, I am extremely grateful I have not had to experience any trauma that has triggered this type of coping mechanism. I also understand that these people are deserving of love and support.

I have (less extreme) hoarding tendencies myself. It helps so much when getting rid of things to know that they may be used and appreciated by other people. If they could tempt that last lady with a scenario like--" There are needy families who need these blankets, etc.", maybe she could budge a bit.

I have finally gotten to a point after 5 years of not cleaning/hoarding? a single widow by changing job location that had work place bullying towards me almost lost my job, 1 car rear ended, moving mom to another state, clearing her house, daughter in high school, then mom passing away, 4 pets passing away of old age, menopause myself, 2nd car purchased a lemon, knee problems, sometimes too much life happening, I have began to start over.

I know the exact feeling being defeated to the strong mind set of "not letting go" of hoarders. My grandmother was a hoarder. She is still is alive but faded away in dementia. My parents, family literary battled and persuaded her to let things go but she did not let go of anything. We could not even persuade her to throw a worthless rag. Unlucky for her, lucky for us her dementia made the hoarding stop. Now she is ninety five years old living away from home with medical staff at her side. Getting rid of her stuff took full THREE years to clear the space that she all stocked up. We did feel slight guilty and sorry for her chucking things out so mindless. It may have been precious properties for her but battling and arguing for such long time was very stressful. She no longer even remember our fight over the things she was so protective of. Watching this show, I recollected the defeated feeling that Jasmine felt.

I've been working on helping a hoarder clean his house in my duties as a disability support worker. By far that client is the nicest man to talk to, and far cooler in his interests than any 50 something has a right to be. He, like so many other hoarders, just needs help. I love that this woman fully involves the ppl she helps out. She gives them autonomy, respect, dignity, and downright kindness that everyone deserves. Its ppl like her that make real change in improving the lives of those suffering. Shaming a hoarder only makes it worse, and I'm glad that shes encouraging a hopeful and positively proactive response to these ppl's needs.

Agree. I think therapy is essential to recover from hoarding. Just removing the things without addressing the emotional issues won't resolve the core problem.
