It is a blessing he can still talk. I met a fellow veteran once; who was intubated & kept pulling the tube out; because it can be very painful to have it in. His vocal chords were damaged so bad; that his voice was a permanent whisper. Love Jason Beghe on Chicago P.D. thank God he still has a voice.

According to Jason, his voice is like that because he was in a car accident several years back, and he kept ripping out his breathing tube which ended up damaging his vocal chords.
But Larry, there's smoke swirling around him. He looks SO much older than his age -- 46 in this video. I don't know of course, but it makes me wonder also about an alcohol issue. I hope too that if that is the case, that he'll get some help so he can quit. I know about all the pressure from the Scientology freaks, but just saw him on Chicago PD and in some shots he looks at least 62-63. Something is taking it's toll...

Definitely possible. The tube was probably an endotracheal tube and he was probably on a vent. My partners voice was also altered after he was intubated for a couple of weeks. I’m sure there was damage to his larynx.

I wasn’t familiar with Jason as an actor before CPD. I watch it primarily because of his authenticity in his character. He’s amazing. The others in the show are terrific. All great actors never want the show to end

I really enjoy you on Chicago PD. Hopefully, if you haven't stopped smoking yet, you will. It is definitely taking its toll on your voice. I truly mean the best for you :)
You can tell he's smoking during this video because the whole time he's filming you can see cigarette smoke wafting by the lens. Clearly a smoker. May not be the primary reason his voice is like this but definitely a contributing factor.
