Oh man, I love the blueprint for the Bourne myth. Adam: _nerds out about Bourne and shows off a movie prop he acquired_ Jamie: _literally does not care_ I don't remember if they showed it in the episode, but the NASA guys were very impressed by how Grant and Tory approached the problem. @Phished123
@Phished123 24 дня назад
yeah not only was it more dense but the smooth shape of the formed ice like an ice cube would also make it more aerodynamic, which would generate more heat, but make it harder for the wind resistance to break the ice up. Im sure its possible for this to happen in real life, but i bet its highly unlikely.
@hanzosbm1
@hanzosbm1 22 дня назад
@@jackfranks7160 Yes, but in the wind tunnel, they had to increase temperature to get it fall off, simulating lower altitudes (not sure if they changed airspeed at all). I wish they would've stayed a little more consistent on this one (what temp did the ice fall off? What approximate altitude does that correspond to? What is the density of the ice formed in this way? How would it have reacted?) My gut feeling is that it's still plausible, but I would've liked to have seen it done more accurately.

What's funny about the Bourne result, specifically the more continuous open flame, is that it implies a version of the scene where instead of the apartment exploding before the bad guys even get inside, it's after a couple minutes of them investigating the apartment when it suddenly bursts into flames with them INSIDE. Kinda feel like that would have been MORE dramatic XD

Great episode, though I do have to point out that Jamie's disappointment in explosion not blowing out windows is unwarranted because the windows were stronger than the plywood walls. If it was a proper european building made of stone, the windows would have blown out. @@pilsplease7561 Airbus isn't Soviet, it's a multinatinal EU company, they had a research center in Russia but they don't work there anymore and like Boeing they no longer sell spare parts to Russia, that's why a lot of planes were falling all over Russia after months without proper mainteinance. And all those "Russian" Beoing and Airbus planes were stolen from companies from other countries, all planes that were in Russian territory when the sanctions were imposed were stolen by the state and given to their own airlines that never owned a Boeing or Airbus before, they were renting them at most. And all the Boeing failures where due to Donald Trump (best friend of Putin outside Russia) who allowed Boeing and other American manufacturers to bypass (give the middle finget to) the FAA and certify their own (poor) work and the (low) quality of the products they were making. There is a slight issue I have with a testing methodology for the explosion myth. I have personally witnessed a house explode from a leaking gas pipe. The gas pipe was leaking for around 25-30 minutes. And all it took was one spark in the whole house was reduced to rubble and it was made of cinder block and brick. Pieces of it hit my mom's place. I heard it from my apartment. It shook the ground
@derpmanaveragegamer7791
@derpmanaveragegamer7791 23 дня назад
that wasnt the myth though? they know it will explode/burn *eventually* since it does happen IRL alot. the myth was that you could have it happen as quickly and in the same fashion as in the movie, which you cant. you get the explosion from the spontaneous ignition of all the natural gas at the same time, where as the movies slow leak doesnt give enough time for the gas to reach a proper mixture ratio and causes it to act as a fire accelerant instead of a explosive ignition.
@theoriginalemim

There is a trend of YT posted television shows having extremely poor audio quality. My theory is that the creator of the videos is not mixing down a surround signal to 2 channel stereo. Often, the announcers voice (which I theorize should be in the center channel) gets lost in the mixdown and is often very quiet or non-existent. I'm just spitballing here.

@horussees
@horussees 24 дня назад
It's not the voltage consumed, it's the amps to wattage, 230v toasters use ~5 amps, which is 1150w, 120v uses ~10a, which is 1200w. So pretty much same power output.

The one thing id say about the blue ice thing is the ice that forms like that is going to be way way more air filled and will thaw and break apart much easier. With the turbulent air atomizing much of the water meaning its more like packed snow than a solid chunk of ice like freezing it in a bucket. The ice from the bucket is going to far more dense and hard to melt than the air splashed water freezing outside the plane. So really want to know what the type of ice wpuld actually do falling like that instead of a perfectly bucket shaped aerodynamic block of ice vs a quickly built up, air filled and completely un aerodynamic.

Yeah, bet they were like "you know, it would be interesting to find out how a faulty liquid tank on an aircraft would behave". Heck that data would also be good to forward to the engineers making planes. Good to know that if all safeties fail and it's also a slow leak, that's what can cause an issue.

well domestic houses do explode in a bag with gas leaks, and those explosions are fast and very destructive, often taking out the entire building, indeed including neighbours houses too, from just one domestic supply line. so something is off here, maybe the wood is absorbing some of the flex in the building materials or the construction wasnt tight enough.

37:14 that’s similar to what my friend and I did at the Tracy airport. His family ran the airport and they had a yearly event called flower bombing. Everyone got together to drop bags of flower at a target and whoever hit the target or the closest to it won. Fun times. He moved after his mom died. Never could find him again.

Likely in the first test with the house the problem was that their house had a lot of open seams in it. The wall were not tightly built together like they are in proper homes.

what could affect it is the seen was set in europe they have 220v mains power were as the U.S only uses 120v for small appliances. and given that for the same amperage you get double the wattage at 220v.

Even to this day the only issue I had with the Blue Ice myth was when they dropped the ice out of the plane it was one solid piece that was smooth, not jagged like the one that formed in the wind tunnel.

I'm the big fan of the Jason Bourne treelogy, and you have done a great job that I can't ever believe! But for the blue ice, I have doubt. In nasa experiment it was like a foam consistency of ice, and at the end it was a solid chunk of ice.

I know that yours was a whoosh but tbh houses blow up from gas leaks quite often, in the uk I’ve seen quite a few and it looks like a bombsite, like a huge explosion so whilst maybe the timing and stuff are off I’d say the principle is more than sound.
@panzerfaus8459
@panzerfaus8459 26 дней назад
Im not certain how gas explosions are in the UK (from the US), but my understanding is that gas explosions here are more often caused by a gas feeder line catching fire then the building itself filling with the gas. The massive Lawrence colomubia gas pipeline explosions that happened in Massachusetts a few years ago are a pretty good example of what im referencing

@@hunyesmith03 my guess is that its mostly to do with the construction differences in the US vs UK and Europe. With stone and plaster being more common over there houses are far better sealed
@hunyesmith03
@hunyesmith03 26 дней назад
@@panzerfaus8459 Yes, that’s a really good point. Our houses are usually made of brick, I’m actually not even sure I’ve ever seen a wood house over here actually, anyway a lot of newer properties ( 1950s onwards) especially suburban have brick houses with a stone cladding and the doors and windows used are very thick and insulated, and there’s like a switch (manual) to set how much air will pass through. I mean they’re obviously not airtight but it’s something we take seriously as it impacts a homes energy rating and thus utility costs. So I think you may be right. I’m a Londoner but I lived in Edinburgh for a while and my house was quite new, 1982 I believe, and it had bricks with mortar then was covered in concrete and a really ugly stone cladding, we then had the very thick windows and doors I mentioned and a super well insulated roof, etc. it never got cold really, so good in that respect. Compared to the place I live now which is Victorian, or the place I lived in Edinburgh before my house (An apartment in a literal castle, and was built in 1638 (renovated in the late 80s), and both here and especially there you could literally feel air rushing through, which I think would prevent or at least lessen an explosion if there was a leak. Usually when you see stories here about this I think it’s a newer suburban property which are often more energy efficient so have the cladding and thick doors, etc to retain heat and stuff. So I think you’re probably completely right! Sorry I’ve ranted on for a bit, I do that, thank you for taking the time to discuss this with me, it’s much appreciated! Enjoy the rest of your day!

Blue ice, the ice “made” with the leak was not a solid chunk, but ice mixed with air, more of a holed type ice. So nice to see Grant! I miss him!
