First movie I saw him in was 'Event Horizon," and fell for him then, so when I saw the trailer for The patriot and saw Jason in it, I saw it opening day. LOL
He plays one of the all time great movie villains but is THE NICEST and most down to earth human being on the planet. It was a real pleasure. Can’t wait to share the full interview!
In my opinion it's the best tier of actor who can play a reprehensible villain and yet be irresistably likable at the same time. Isaacs owned every scene he was in
Giant of an actor. He typically plays deplorable people, but I’ve never seen him do something where he didn’t own the scene. I don’t know how to critique actors, but when he’s present, to me he’s always the focal point. Even if that’s not the intention lol.
He also has more range than what we typically see him do. Even though Peter Pan wasn't well received, I thought he did a great job portraying both Hook and the Darlings's father, though they were completley different from each other.
this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. Yes it may not be accurate but its one of the few films about the Revolutionary war I can think. Plus gotta love John Williams' music
I knew a professor of history from Pennsylvania who was a historical advisor on the Patriot. He wound up resigning because he was so exasperated by the film’s inaccuracies.
As Mel Gibson said (not word for word but the gist of it) the movie's inaccurate? K, cool, maybe it'll make you pick up and read a book. As with any movie with conflict as a backdrop, they had to keep it condensed enough for most people to follow. If people got interested in the conflict as a result, cool, they can read about it. Same thing with the 1997 Titanic movie, is it 100% accurate? No, but they tried while still keeping with the condensed format of a movie, was it that bright when the ship sank? No, but we wouldn't see it otherwise. Did the break originate at the 3rd funnel? No, it started below the waterline, but again, we wouldn't have seen it otherwise. And they still had to make it a hit with a wide audience because of how much the set cost to make = Enter the love story. 100% accurate? No, but it's close enough, and it booted MASSIVE interest on Titanic, and Cameron has since MORE than vindicated himself by doing (Safe) dives on the wreck and collecting data we now know about the wreck, we know more now THANKS to that movie than before it. Same thing with The Patriot and other war flicks like it.
I was 14 when The Patriot came out. The 1st Rated R movie I saw on theaters. Jason Isaacs is a hell of an actor and am I the only one who remembers Jason Isaacs in Armageddon???
Jason Isaacs is very,VERY underrated. After "the Patriot" he was in "Sweet November",mind you.His Col. William still haunts me.Great talent....And i have to mention i first saw him in "Event Horizon".
I was 10 and that was the first movie I saw Jason Isaacs in - throughout the Harry Potter movies I referred to him as “Draco’s Dad, Col. William Tavington”
"Fire the house and barns! . . . Let it be known if you harbor the enemy you will lose your home!" "If I do this we both know I can never return to England with honor. What, I wonder is to happen to me?" "Stupid boy!" Tavington easily one of the most hated villains in cinema history. Jason Isaacs is one of my favorite actors.
I love the movie primarily because it was filmed here in SC. And I became a huge fan then. Being that was filmed here..I know several people who helped on the sets and all of them said he was by far the kindest person there.
The Patriot was my first movie I bought on VHS. Still have it today. Isaacs was phenomenal, I feared his presence on screen. He's such an underrated actor and needs more lead roles.
Patriot was the first movie I saw with Jason in it too. I was 12. The character was very.... illuminating.... for a 12 year old girl. That whole "hair down, shirt open, shaving in the creek" scene-- I mean, iykyk! ;) I've been a huge fan for going on 24 years! Your interviews with him are great!
I'm glad I met him. He was really nice. I told him about that movie. I asked him if he could evaluate my act for Star Trek since he is in Discovery. He said to me personally he wanted me in the show.
Rated R, but I was in 5th grade, we were learning about the revolutionary war, our teacher actually let us watch the movie, of course they skipped all the bloody scenes, but it was a good movie, loved it and Jason Isaac really help make that movie.
Same here! Only I was in 6th grade. Our history teacher let us watch it as an end of school year treat. I remember us all going apeshit when the cannon ball blew off that guy’s head
I was in 7th grade and our history teacher was also the JROTC guy. He didn't skip the bloody parts. He told us if we lived in that time we would've been given a gun and been killed with the rest. A lot of 13 year old boys gave their lives...why are you so special?
This guy is one hell of an actor!!! After tavington, luscious malfoy, ect. In star trek, not so much...he exudes bad ass, or at least his characters do! Too manly for trek.....keep up the great work Jason!
He had a very limited role in "Fury" but I adored him in it. Very short scene, almost inconsequential even, but he's so good and has such a commanding presence he made his scene memorable. Love this guy. He's one of those extremely talented guys like Ralph Fiennes or Iwan Rheon who seem so genuinely sweet and nice in real life but can play the most despicable villains that you love to hate. Wish Jason could have played Bond.
One of the first films my family got on DVD (in a weird magazine subscriptionesque service that sold DVD's from a flyer in sets of ten or more films before netflix existed). We got The Patriot, The Mummy, Twister, Top Gun, Forest Gump, and a few others back when a 36" tv was considered pretty big (it was because it weighed about 200 lbs). The Patriot has always been one of my favorite, remote dropper movies. Jason Isaacs completely killed it as an antagonist. (side note: extremely underrated in Blackhawk Down)
His troops saluting him at Outback Steakhouse is hilarious. Any way, The Patriot is a classic. One of the most fun movies - and Jason was an incredible villain. The movie wouldn't have been nearly as good with anyone else in that role. Perfectly cast.
I was happy (along with every other person ever) when he died in The Patriot due to loathing his character, seeing him in this light makes me like him, outstanding actor.
My silly comment, did Jason have to expand his British accent in the patriot? I realized some time ago he was in Black Hawk down and of course, American accent was well done. Very good actor. Would like to see him in more movies.
What a great interview!! Great questions and it seemed like a lot of fun too!!! I cannot wait for the full thing! I'm so excited to see it!! Thanks for posting!
Jason is great. I hated him in The Patriot, I dig him in Star Trek, and he gives awesome interviews. His American accent is top class, and for me, is the mark of a great actor.
Wow that was so cool! 😄👏🏼 I actually only wanted to have a quick look at what this interview is about but then ended up watching all 16 minutes of it and enjoying it tremendously! 😀 I could listen to Jason talk for hours, it's so entertaining and fun and interesting! Although he probably talks nonstop if you don't tell him tell him to breathe from time to time. 😉 My first conscious memory of him in a movie is probably as Lucius Malfoy but I might've seen him before that. What a great guy, I love him! He's so attractive and sweet and he plays the villains with such arrogance and stylishness, so amazing!! 🥰 I love his multi-faceted characters and Captain Lorca was actually a great role of his recent stuff! 😊 Thanks for this interview, it was delightful! ☺️
Isaacs is such a great actor... he was such a great villain on the Patriot and in Star Trek Discovery... when someone makes you viscerally hate them they are damn good... he would have been boss in Game of Thrones... in any role... maybe as Stannis...
That's how I picture actors. Pouring their heart and soul out, bawling uncontrollably, outstanding acting performance, mesmerizing, you feel their pain, like you're there. Then ten minutes later on a cigarette break "Yeah, so I met this bitch out on Sunset last night..."
I think I was 14 when I first saw The Patriot in '02 a couple years after it came out and I had the fattest crush on him. It's been 20 years and I'm 34 now and I still find him attractive lol. I think he was 36-37 when he filmed. YIKES. But really, my two favorite villains in film: Tavington and Hans Landa
Boy did you nail it!! Show stealers!! Rickman and Isaac. Two of the best “bad guy” actors to do it!! Both in Harry Potter was icing on the cake of their careers. Love those two guys
A great actor and surprisingly enough does a lot of villains and The Patriot even though yes it is rated R but a great Movie about the war against the British
I think the Tavington character was compelling because he was a trained professional, and capable, soldier who had this inexplicable cruel, ruthless streak in him. Like Isaacs said he was more motivated by his own pursuits as opposed to his loyalty to the king, and he couldn't care less who paid the price as long as he met his objectives. But, that made his eventual fate all the more satisfying.
Most of the most famous and notorious villains are psychopaths, serial killers, or evil lords. Jason Isaacs managed to portray an everyman, just a soldier of high command, but for me, he is the most terrifying villain ever.
Are there any Brits who watched the patriot and liked it?! *Jason Issacs while acting in some comedy with Steve Buschemi and Jefferey Tambor in some comedy about The Death of Stalin* : “I did and I enjoyed it! It’s been a long time coming!”
I didn't recognize Mr. Isaac's played a ranger captain in Blackhawkdown, so in the patriot I admit I loved hating him, he has one of the best evil looks he is up their with Bill Skarsgard as pennywise. I was screaming when Mel shoved the bayonet in his throat! The music was patriotic to the bone, when Mel grabs the continental colors and screams "Hold The Line" I sobbed my guts out! The Patriot reminds the brits, whoever wins the war, gets to write the scripts.
