Dude, lost my wife to cancer. We were married 40 yrs. I cared for her while she was at home hospice. Watched her condition get worse every day. I stayed with her 24/7 til the the day she died in my arms. That was seven years ago. I still hurt. God i miss her.
Perhaps my favourite song of all time. I'd gotten into the habit of going and seeing Isbell by myself every year before the pandemic stopped live music, and he finally played this one at the show I saw in Buffalo in 2018, a year and a half after I'd lost my mother to cancer. My dad died unexpectedly this week, and he's playing Western New York on August 4. You bet your ass I'll be there.
I've heard this song a hundred times and it still makes me cry every time. Especially this live version. He sings with so much pain in his voice and it's a beautiful song.
Jason Isbell writes very real songs, plus he's a fantastic performer and guitarist. Here's a list of some of my favourites: Cover Me Up - Live Nashville Strawberry Girl Super 8 If We Were Vampires Save the World Speed Trap Town Great choice by JWL!
When I saw what you wrote as "a Title" for this, I almost didn't listen... Yeah... I went through it with my Wife, nearly 20 years ago, already now... Thanks, Harri.
This is one of the two songs that first caught my attention re Jason Isbell. He is a profound songwriter. Thank you, Harri, for giving him a listen. There are depths to be explored with Jason Isbell.
Long time fan here. My interpretation when he says “given up my place in line” is regarding saying deep prayers for her and offering to God to change places with her such as “take me instead”.
Isbell, as many have said, is a great songwriter. His writes great characters (some based on real people - Decoration Day, Cast Iron Skillet) and doesn't dodge issues like race (White Man's World), school shootings (Save The World), addiction (Cover Me Up). He leaves it all out there and you gotta respect him for that. I hope his career keeps growing and expanding. I know it's a bold statement but I think his songwriting on the newest album, Weathervanes, is approaching Dylan territory.
Thanks for discovering Jason Isbell, Harri. Very unknown here in the U.K.; deserves much wider recognition. Also gives me the opportunity to recommend something related, for your reaction. Think you'll love this remarkable cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' by The Highwomen. The superb singers include Jason's wife Amanda and the wonderful Brandi Carlisle. (And Jason in the band). Goosebumps! m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jVLNB3d-2cA.html&pp=ygUTaGlnaHdvbWVuIHRoZSBjaGFpbg%3D%3D
I should have stayed on in my school administrator job. Then my grade would have been uplifted. An E grade is considered something like a re-trial of your assessment. But as I was flipping through all the Business Administration books at that time. I wanted a taste of the private sector especially the financial sector. So.I resigned although based on my intuition the trial would have been lifted as the Principal denied giving me a letter of having integrity issues. That is why in the recommendation letter by the Ministry.of Education. they said that I resign on my own accord. That is the trouble with third party onlookers. They are not in the thick of things. The trouble with the current state of this world of social media is that a lot of gossips are getting re-hashed. Boy oh boy,
