Shame he called it the Intertoto cup, which it wasn’t. I remember the Anglo-Italian cup. Boro had a season or two of it 93-95 before we were promoted to the Prem. it was a totally pointless but fun idea haha

Brilliant this lads!!! Fair play to Jason Lee in what seems a very honest assessment of his career. I am massive Walsall Fan (for my sins) and I have often been in the away end where our Skipper Donovan Daniels gets abuse for his dreadlocks from close by home supporters which refer back to the same abuse Jason Lee took. Unfortunately when these chants go out even years later there not always forgotten sadly. Keep up the top work boys, and good man Jason Lee with the PFA work 👊….. Smithy

What a brilliant interview , I remember the era well as I was obsessed with football back then and went to a lot of games, some where Jason was playing and witnessed the abuse which always made me think why was he being targeted because he was a decent player, it never felt right. I'm glad it's been called out now as racism and not banter and David Baddiel acknowledges this and apologises, yes Fantasy Football did rip a lot of players in humour, but not in the same way they went at Jason Lee. Thanks for such a great podcast.

I remember singing that song in the away section at Forest as a 15yr old, there was no racist undertones to it from my point of view but after hearing his side and then pointing to Blackface I can see were he is coming from, glad he came out of it all stronger and I think everyone learns from the whole experience, top guest👍

That was really hard going for almost an hour, listening to him telling us how hard he is/was. The Kevin Ball and Mick Harford episodes; at no point did either of those guys try to make out that they were hard, they just talked about the game and told stories. It's because of everyone who played against them that you knew they were hard on the pitch. It wasn't until the Fantasy Football stuff came up that he seemed to let his guard down and talk without seeming like an act. Enjoyable interview though, yet again. Thanks guys.

quality episode, as always! the lads get the guests and do a great job. such a good podcast. better than any other football podcast, leaning on proper lads when football was pure. I also think its a good platform for some of these guys to speak out, gets things of their chest and hopefully make them feel better for whatever demons they might have. And John, I was at Elland road when you got your hattrick. we'd won it at half time, most fans thought it. i had a feeling that night and at half time i said to my mate "this isn't over". you got so much shit and did what you did during that game, fair play. i said it then and ill say it again, one of the best (second half) performances I've ever seen at Elland road and i was there for champions league games, viduka sociring 4 against liverpool. that game and your goals, i still talk about to this day. top guys! thanks for doing this

Did he say he found the Premier league easy he was comfortable. Not how I remember it, he was garbage. Don't remember him being no hardman either. Not hating on him but that wasn't a reflection on his career.

I remember getting a book, each clubs worst player, like a stocking filler thing, every club in the football league where the fan's trust would vote, some were harsh, balaban at villa fur being injured, Smith at Brighton for that one miss, Lee got forests, I'm sure that he scored no more than three league goals in a season.

I don't remember him being a "hardman" at all, target mam with limited scoring ability. Just looked there, the successful season at Southend he mentions he scored 3 goals although I think brett a angell was the main goalscorer then.

I remember when he came to Grimsby Town on loan when we were in the Championship. We could tell he had something about him that made him a PL player. Great interview and what a sound guy, who comes across as very rationale and reasonable RE the Fantasy Football issue. Glad he’s doing well.

You can see his pain when talking about Fantasy Football, I used to laugh when watching it as in innocent 11 year old but feel like fuck for him now. Baddiel and Skinner and averyone behind the scenes should have known better.

i don't think Baddiel and Skinner went out of their way to be racist, i don't believe they went out to hurt Jason's feelings, they made many jokes about lots of players during that time, black or white - beckham for example got lots of shit, it was a successful program at the time but time does move on, we learn and are educated, same with little Britain and other British comedy's. when you look at comedy later than that, i think calling it bullying is very harsh,

I always remember him as being incredibly lucky to get a chance at PL level and his scoring record was never good at a higher level either. He was a stop gap Championship signing for Forest and was never cut out for the top level. In hindsight the pineapple stuff was wrong and it may well have affected him, but I think he'd have made his way back down a level or two fairly quickly regardless.
