Yes, that is Jason Michael Carroll. There is a very good video of him singing this at the Grand Ole Opry live when you can see the very real anger when he says "because there's nothing that anyone would do." He didn't have any direct personal experience to use to write this song, but he used several nationally publicized news stories as a basis. Another song, close to this one, is Martina McBride's 'Concrete Angel.'
I had the same anger when I first saw this video. I could hear it in his voice even on the studio recording. I can only imagine live. I'm a Grateful Dead fan so I know what live brings to a song. Remember, even mean kids could have happenings at their home that cause that behavior.

Whenever I hear this song and I see this video, it takes me back to my childhood in the 60s as a young boy being abused find my father, back in those days no one ever really talked about this sort of thing and I used to have to hide my bruises and I'm surprised I never had any broken bones because my father would hit me it's just about anything he could get his hands on, I was hit with 2x 4S, is 5 gallon bucket, horse whips, you name it I was probably hit with it! By God's mercy and his grace, I lived through it! But as bad as it was for me, it helped me to be a better father to my son's, and I vowed that I would never ever put my sons through what I experienced with my dad! 👍
JMC is one of the greatest people I've ever met! This song would bring me to tears, and he has so many more great songs that evoke emotions! Look up "Where I'm From" and "Livin' Our Love Song" for some of his best! If you really want tearjerkers, search his songs "2 AM" and "Tell Me Your Name." His whole catalogue is excellent!

my granddaughter has a friend like Alyssa.... and as soon as she told her mom(my daughter), her mom called her 4 older brothers and they got her out of there .... I'm so proud of my kids .... they said mom ... we remember you playing that song non stop when we were younger .... smiling .....
As a daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother……I get anywhere from teary eyed to downright ugly crying when I hear this song. There is no abuse in my immediate family…..but I know of many families that have dealt with this. It hurts my heart and soul to know that there are people out there that do this and get away with it. 😢😢Thank you for reacting to this song.
My friend was telling me about new neighbors across the street and that the 2 kids were always clinging to each other, peeking out the window from behind the curtains. All red flags went up in my head. I told her to call the authorities to check on their welfare but she was afraid because of the intimidating appearance that does not respect women and minors. - Low and behold, her upstairs neighbor saw the guy beating the wife through the living room and called the police. The cops have been there several times but nothing has changed. -- I have never been abused by my parents, but was lucky to have survived two violent husbands and got away alive . So I knew the signs. - Thank you both 🤍🤍

Holy f*ck, this brought back so many childhood nightmare situations. Im a hot mess right now. Ive called the police many times on a few neighbors when I had *proof* that abuse was accurring. Nothing was done. I finally had to move to another city because of the endless anxiety I experienced.

Nice reaction as a survivor of domestic violence and being abuse when I was younger I can say if this songs massage helps stop the bad abuses towards kids that's what matters. Say prayers for those that go through things like because not every abuse story ends in happy endings.
Love this song, i hate it had to be written. It took Carroll 2 years to write. I honestly believe the is a special place reserved in hell for child abusers
