For this episode of Jason's All Time Favorite RC Products we head back to the mid 1980's for the original Associated RC10.
A little history of the RC10...
Roger Curtis's 1984 design of a serious 1:10-scale electric offroad car not only led to explosive growth within the company, but within the world of R/C racing as well. This new vehicle was the now-famous Associated RC10 buggy. Built on a 6061 aircraft alloy chassis, the new car was, unlike its Japanese counterparts of the time, a serious offroad racing machine. Another 1-2-3 IFMAR sweep would follow in 1985 at the first IFMAR 1:10 Electric Off-Road World Championship. The RC10, possibly more than any R/C vehicle before or since, is credited with making the single biggest impact on radio control racing. The success of the RC10 forced Associated to move to a larger facility, which they found in Costa Mesa in 1987.
That same year, former Yamaha technician and professional R/C racer Cliff Lett joined Associated to head the research and development department. This department, consisting of Lett, Roger Curtis and Husting's son, Curtis, were responsible for the RC10 cars that won the IFMAR World Championships in 1989 in Australia, and in 1991 in Detroit. The success of the RC10 coupled with other cars of the time, namely the RC12LW, the RC10L, RC10LSS and the RC10T kept production going for five years and prompted the necessity of extending their building in Costa Mesa.
Gene Husting helped develop cars for Associated until 2000, when he retired. He is responsible for the lineup up to the RC10B3, RC10T3, TC3 and GT RTRs. Five years after his retirement, the company introduced an entirely new line of offroad racers with the introduction the 1:18 scale electric RC18T and RC18MT miniature trucks. In 2006, with 27 IFMAR victories in all, Team Associated is the world's "winningest" RC car manufacturer. Reedy motors, a division of Associated, has powered 28 IFMAR World Champions.
R&D manager and world-class driver Cliff Lett broke the RC land speed record of more than 111 mph (179 km/h) with a heavily modified Associated RC10L3 touring car at Irwindale Speedway on January 13, 2001.
A modified RC10 with an off-the-shelf Parma International 1963 Chevrolet Corvette body was used in the famous chase scene in the 1988 motion picture, The Dead Pool. In it, Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry is being pursued through the streets of San Francisco, California by a highly explosive bomb disguised as an RC car. The "bomb" was actually driven by IFMAR world-champion race driver Jay Halsey. The car was in fact an electric; the sounds of a nitro-powered engine were added in post-production.

This is a great piece of history Jason! I was 10 when the RC10 came out. I always wanted an RC10 and a Javelin back then but only had inexpensive RC cars like a World Engines Rockbuster and some others. Fast forward and now I’m almost 50 and I’ve now built a Javelin and just got in on the 40th Anniversary Gold Pan kit and it’s really exciting

My first RC10 was converted every week to keep up with our track operator. I raced on a shoestring and every week they changed from off road, to dirt oval, to paved road course, to paved oval. Due to aftermarket support for the RC10, I was able to run the same chassis in each type of track. I was even able to be competitive with the sponsored local guys. I still have that car.
@brandonbentley8532
@brandonbentley8532 4 года назад
Thank you for sharing that! Similar happened to me in the late 80s and 90s when rc 10 conversions for everything from dirt oval to carpet tracks was common. I ran mine in the dirt in the summer and slammed it down and put foams on it and ran it indoor on carpet during the winter...those were the days...funny how modern 10th scale buggies are ran on a cross of carpet and off road with jumps today. Such a versatile chassis!

When I was a kid in southern California, about 1984 or 1985 my dad would have my car set up for dirt off road for Friday night and Saturday night he would have every thing switched over ( body, tires, gears, and suspension ) for paved banked oval racing at the Velodrome. The RC-10 was such a good platform for any kind of racing!
@perfectsplit5515
@perfectsplit5515 Год назад
@@shawnsmith8775 I think back then there were far more on-road race tracks than dirt off-road tracks. The dirt tracks require a lot of logistics and maintenance. The irony was that off-road buggies were so much more common and popular. So many owners of off-road buggies just ended up racing them on on-road tracks.

Excellent discussion! With the release of the 40th anniversary edition in 2024 this video is an excellent refresher of one of the greatest rc buggies ever. I ordered one and can’t wait to get it. The RC10 is etched in most peoples memories and is very nostalgic for us older kids. I raced a Losi LXT way back when and regret never getting an original RC10.

I still have my Tamiya Rough Rider RC card from 1980/1981. The Rough Rider, Sand Scorcher,F150 and the COX scorpion were the true origins of the 1/10 Off-Road car scene. Without those cars the R10 would not exist. That being said the RC10 revolutionized the 1/10 scale off-road racing world.

At about 11 or 12 years old I'd go into the local Hobby Store and stare at the high-end RC Buggies on display. I specifically remember the Tamiya Fox and Team Associated RC10. I remember the excitement I felt looking at those machines. I also remember my dad saying: "Well son, that there isn't really a toy" because they weren't cheap. Later that Christmas I received a Tyco Aerohopper lol. I loved my Areohopper, but I broke it on day 1 and cried myself to sleep. A broken Aerohopper taught be how to get creative in fixing things. From that point forward though, it would be real rc vehicles only. I bought a used Tamiya Blackfoot from a neighbor and later my older brother sent me a used RC10 goldpan in the mail. RC cars were a huge part of my childhood and early teen years...and I don't regret it for a minute!

Great video. The RC hobby is a wonderful avenue for creativity and understanding mechanics, physics, and vehicle dynamics. The RC10 is the car that really considered those principles as part of it's design. As a young teen in 1990, Lett's nats winner was my idea of the pinnacle of 2wd buggies. I still have my early Championship Edition that was meticulously built to replicate his car that was featured in RCCA to as exact details as young man of 13/14 possibly could. I still have the magazine too! While the car has seen better days, and a few parts replaced from it's closest replication of his car due to failure, I'm happy to say it's still operational to this day. Long live the RC10!

@@Joe_Sa_3rd Hey me too! I learned it was all about getting the car hooked up to the track and learning how to get a good line on a turn, or reverse break the wheels to control the angle you land from a jump. With a mechanical speed control and a no label reedy motor. The motor was a gift from one of the track guys as kind of a welcome to the hobby kind of thing. I found out today my dad threw it away (he kept the box for other things!) tossed the car, modified to be a real beast, a couple months back. I figured it would be safe in his garage forever.

I wqas 16. I had a part time job for savoing cash. We had two dirt tracks in the city, and the indoor wearhouse held some reedy preliminaries,and where I raced. I took my gold pan RC10 my dad bot me for xmas, bog standard, installed graphite suspension attachments, titanium arms, new linkages, new diff, one of the best stock motors at the time that tried to skirt the rules by making the bushing contact with rotor smaller for less friction. I reduced the weight by machining the pan a bit after watching what some of the more competitive racers were doing (my 30w iron sucked, so was making friends borrowing soldering irons). Before I did that, I ran all stock except for softer front tires and square fuzzy rear tires, and a reedy stock motor I got at a competition. Replaced the mech speed control with I don't remember the brand, but a mid tech high freq. speed control, and high speed freq was the new thing) and a fast front servo that cost some tie to save for. Still used the analog remote from futba, everyone was on digital. A pro racer wanted to check it out, and told me "dude, your car is the most hooked up I've ever tried at this track, good job dude". I remember winning the night's race and being really proud.

The rc10 that I still play with has the UNL trailing arm conversion with 64 pitch gears in the transmission along with titanium screws ball in and everything else I could put on there titanium. RPM arms I even had titanium universal joints. I really like that car. I wish Team Associated came out with a four-wheel drive a lot earlier. I have one of the newer javelins they came out and it is updated for 48 pitch gears and newer screws. I love it and brings me back to when I was a kid. I still play with both of them

I wonder how competitive these would be today. I know the drive train wouldn't be as reliable with brushless power, but I think the suspension was so good it still might hold up today.

@@ctsd623 I actually heard of some of the pros using one of the older cars like this and they were still coming in third or fourth. When they put that to the test and the drivetrain can take a brushless drive if you use metal gears.I have the 64 pitch gear conversion for the stealth and it handles anything I can throw at it. And the old one was 32 pitch It can handle quite a bit. I had an associated B3 and put in one of the newer brushed motors and laid down all the teeth in the transmission. But I upgraded with metal gears all the way through and nothing will flip over backwards like you wouldn't believe but it won't hurt the gearbox

A sad lifelong tamiya fan I did admire this car. I saw an ad for it in a magazine. That classic mud spattered shot. It was crazy expensive in Australia. Couldn’t get past all the stuff you didn’t get with the kit.

I still have my “A” pan and a couple 10t’s. One of the best platforms ever!

I had one of the old RC10 (the box on the top right). I rememeber upgrading to the Stealth Transmission in it. I was running a Futuba Radio and Novak Speed controller. I'm currently 42 and had this as a kid.

The RC10 was THE car in the 80's. It was really the only "race" car. Everything else was pretty much a toy.

I wish that the: -big front bumper, -three-piece wheels, and -gear cover from the classic RC10 were still included with the modern B6 variations.

The speed control servo sat back inside that area under the rear shock tower and moved the wiper that slid across the green ceramic wire wound variable resistor. They would get really hot if you loaded down the motor too much.

I remeber back in the day (I would've been 13yrs old) unmodded rc10 look vintage yet ones modded for race looked super modern .

I remember when the JRX2 was in production, Team Losi made a dozen hop-up accessories for the original RC10. I thought it was strange that Team Losi made upgrades for their competitor.

We used to dye all the white parts. The wheels, A arms, every plastic piece that was white, got dyed black.
