It is an injustice that dude wasn't in more prominent roles after doing Dragon. Now he's going to be the secondary villain in the live adaptation of Mulan, which hopefully will give him some more exposure for at least big secondary roles in coming Hollywood movies.
link biff yes, the movie was too unfactual, however that's on the writers and producers behind the film. The lack of factual storytelling doesn't take away from how well Jason portrayed Bruce Lee. The only reason that Dragon was so successful was because of Jason Scott Lee. His performance saves that film. Other than that, it was nothing more than a big budget, Hollywood version of a 70's bruceploitation flick
Steve Gallegos I do agree that Scott Lee did a great job playing Lee, but I also honestly think that it wasn't quite Oscar material. Golden Globe? Sure.
One of my favorite movies. Only saw it again last night. Jason really managed to express Bruces struggle for respect and acceptance in the USA but also China. It's no typical Kung-Fu movie people would just watch cause there are fight scenes. It shows the Lee family marching through Problems. Life threatening problems or financial problems. It also shows the sad fact about racism. But unfortunately from both sides. But with all struggles and catastrophies, in the end it's the family that matters. Such a great movie!
Fun fact - Jason Scott Lee was the inspiration for the name of the original Red Ranger in Power Rangers, Jason Lee Scott. As the story goes, one of the writers was a fan of the Bruce Lee biopic and use the actor's name as inspiration for the red ranger. And in the very first pilot of Power Rangers, it was Mark Dacascos who was cast as the Red Ranger :P
remember, hollywood was very racist against bruce lee. Bruce had to go back to Hong Kong to make his fame, and Bruce really never became famous in the US while he was still alive. Enter the Dragon and game of death were all released AFTER Bruce died.
Jason Scott Lee you were great in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story I just watched again on cable. Very emotional for me. Look forward to seeing you on the screen soon.
HIs Bruce Lee biopic still remains the best in my opinion. There have been new ones popping up in China and America. Nothing beats his classic biopic. Movie was entertaining and Jason's performance was top notch.
love JSL!! people need to see his documentary when he went to Indonesia also when he went to become a monk. He has a very big heart great guy hope to work with him in the future!! I still watch Dragon he killed it as Bruce Lee!!!
Jose Martinez sure did! Man, people need to get a grip. Have an imagination...its a movie. Not a documentary. It was fun. I didn't try to fool anyone or be beyond itself. "Jason Scott Lee was too muscular, overacting, etc..." ridiculous criticism
I think it's a problem that Jason knows, even having played Bruce Lee, he can't fix by himself. He's right, we'll need more strong personalities who won't be quiet willing to push the boundaries. "Willing is not enough - we must do" - Bruce Lee
Jason Scott Lee as Bruce Lee in 'Dragon-The Bruce Lee Story' - a LEGENDARY performance - truly breathtaking and has been in my all time top 10 movies for that reason alone!
I still have the DVD. I hope they made a Blu Ray copy of this movie. I like how he portrayed Bruce Lee. He is dynamic and explosive and I watched the movie over and over again.
that's a tough situation for the interviewer to place him in. As an actor having to fight Hollywood for good roles, if he says the wrong thing or tells a harsh truth it could kill any future opportunities he may get. I admire the way he handles it but I wish he had the freedom to really speak his mind.
Don't blame me as a movie goer for the lack of roles in movies for asian actors...I'd welcome more in movies if they're as good as Jason, he's amazing.
@@ruffgodz9543 They pretty much played Bruce Lee in low-budget material arts films. The idea was to get a Bruce Lee lookalike and give a similar name to make money. This was known as BRUCEploitaion.
He was absolutely amazing in the Bruce Lee movie. He should’ve been a big action star. White supremacy & racism is absolutely terrible for all of the talented actors and actresses of all colors who suffered.
Nice to see he he associated Asian struggle with that of others who've struggled eith the same issues.... unfortunately, these groups don't come together enough, or do caught in their own tribalism that they can't the forest above the trees
I hope JSL does write and bring his stories to film, as the ladies of Hollywood are now doing. He is an awesome actor and I would go see anything he is in, Hollywood just does not give people of color a big chance so please JSL write those movies so your fans can go see them!
stay strong china, its ok, your amazing jason scott lee, i agree chinese actors and other people of color should be in the movies, deffinitely, much love to the people of china, thanks for changeing peoples lives for the better with your movies china, and thats coming from someone whos not asian, but i do have some asiatic relatives, i just dont know who they are, peace love and prosper, i hope you get to be in the movies, the movies are changeing now, or at least starting too, pacific rim hade an asian in it, black panther hade blacks in it and that has changed movies for me and becuase its the most popular film out here, it gets people thinking to cast different people in there shows, the struggle of making movies with different types of people is starting to end because people like you and me are ending that with our fantasy comics, its finally starting to come full circle, we cant create movies out here yet in america yet, you know why, but we will get to eventually or soon, much love to china, your movies changeing our lives for the better, a comment from a black man, stay strong for the people that love you.
I moved to Fullerton at 10 years old from Brooklyn, NY and for the first almost 10 years I had to really try hard to force myself to speak like an Orange County dude. By the time I was 18-19, I learned to realize accents aren’t everything and even my original Brooklyn accent was cool all along. So I understand him on that.
Yes he is the only one so far I can recount as a portrait of Bruce. It is very hard. He is at least has the fighting and physical down. No one can train like Bruce
the movie " remo, unarmed and dangerous" comes to mind, The role as chun - korean master of sinanju, was given to a white dude.. It must have taken forever to make him look like a korean guy- I dont get it
Probably one of the best JSL interviews and on the topic of "Asian males in Hollywood". Clearly Hollywood is a business FIRST. Entertainment 2nd. And since it is about the $ it is hard for the white execs to be willing to take a chance on an Asian actor/actress. Are they bankable? Interestingly, Brandon Lee (Bruce Lee's son) was becoming a star in Hollywood. Getting better and better roles. Which involved less and less martial arts (e.g. The Crow). He had the star power and was building a following. From all races. But he was mixed-race. It's still extremely hard for a full-blooded Chinese, Japanese or Korean actor to make it in Hollywood. Going for roles not intended for Asians. Hollywood NEEDS to start taking chances again. Start with smaller budget films. Let the new Asian actors prove themselves. Have mixed race relationships written. Reflecting real life. Why "hide it"? Studios need to take the lead. Do a dramatic film with a white female and Chinese male. Have them do a love scene with full nudity. Break the ice so to speak. But it would have to be done "well". Tastefully. So many mixed race relationships (couples dating) and marriages. Should be reflected in film. Just as there have been white/black actors in lead roles. Something JSL touched on. Black actors have come a long way and have been getting recognition and aren't being given stereotypical "black roles" (e.g. thugs). There was Jungle Fever back in the late 80's or early 90's. Lots of headlining black action stars. Comedians. How long is it going to take for Asian actors to be where black actors are today? Another 25 years? isn't helping that in most "respectable" Asian families "acting" is and most likely will never be a choice profession. As most Asians are very practical people.
I loved that movie about Bruce Lee. Dragon was great.!! Jason Scott Lee made some good movies.!! How did he get the Lee name..?? I always thought he was actually related to Bruce Lee.!!
Speaking of white washing, have you seen Hollywood's take on Ghost in the Shell? The original franchise is Japanese, set in Japan, the characters Japanese, with some key plot lines based on Japan's social and economic structures. Yet - this is the fun part - Hollywood's take on it OF COURSE casts the leading characters (who are all Japanese) with white actors. This is before you even start looking at the plot itself... which is about as far from the original series as one can possibly get.
Pretty much the same thing happened with Hachiko. The story about a loyal to his master japanese dog, adapted into western reality. Still great movie though. Unlike Dragon Ball.
HEY the t BEST way CUT down Stereo Types is try to get ASIAN Director to make our movies. Hey guess what , do what SPIKE LEE did. He directed all his movies under Black perspectives, POV so he cut down alot of Stereo types .
