Same here. Not exactly a fan of the more popular movies he played in - Although I must admit I haven't seen 'The End of the Tour', - but the guy ain't no moron, for sure. Ergo this movie just entered my movies to watch list.

@@RogerSartet007 I got a more pedestrian vibe and the ending "fake it till you make it" is almost complete word-for-word Freudian transference IMO.

I don't know that much about David but it seemed he was overwhelmed by unrealistic expectations of others and was very apologetic trying to explain himself constantly that's not something he could control so it sounds like another unreasonable expectation he just cope or be happy about being misunderstood or existing in a society he didn't feel he belonged in. A sensitive intelligent person should not be expected to be comfortable adapting to unintelligent insensitive people. He seemed like a fish out of water when I listen to his interviews.

I just watched an interview with Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, Place beyond the Pines movies) he just adapted the book The Light between the Oceans and the author M.L Stedmen called him up after watching the film that week and said she cried the entire rest of the day because she felt like someone finally understand what she was trying to say in writing the book. This reminds me of alot of writers and people, David Wallace too.

I believe Wallace's façade was a very precisely tuned drilling operation with the sole purpose of extracting admiration and interest from others. These things were a drug that kept his pain at bay and many times in his life he struck oil such as with his first book or with the success of Infinite Jest but like with all drugs, you acclimatize and have to hit the next exponentially greater high. I think Wallace's depression was that ancient pain he'd suppressed from his childhood and the failures/abuses of his parents. It was his mind trying to heal, but he couldn't understand it. If he'd just dug deeper and realized his depression wasn't trying to hurt him but heal him, maybe he'd still be around today.

"I believe Wallace's façade was a very precisely tuned drilling operation with the sole purpose of extracting admiration and interest from others." I wouldn't say this with the same confidence that you did but that's how I felt reading infinite jest. "validation at all costs" feels like DFW writing.
