@@tr3290 how
@tr3290
@tr3290 3 года назад
@@vittoopugliese well let's say you are working with a vst and using ableton. First get it as loud as you can using the volume of the vst, just under the point of distortion. Then if your vst has a distortion option ( like in serum), turn that on, and get it to boost the volume a bit, but not overly distort it, so play with the mix and distortion amount until it's a clean loud sound. Then add a filter (using serum an example), and just use the drive and fat settings to get a bit more volume out of it. It should already be pretty loud. then freeze and flatten it as audio (with the channel at 0 DB). Then, boost your audio clip gain a few db, or just under the point of distorting. At that point, you can add a utility plugin to the channel, and boost the gain or drop it depending on how loud you want it to be. The final thing you can do to make it louder is to boost eq. Cut undesirable frequencies to create a bit of headroom, and then boost some desirable frequencies to get a bit louder. There you go, the loudest sound you've ever heard without having to compress it, and volume control without having to touch the faders. Obviously the more it distorts the closer you get to a compressed type of sound. But you can get sounds loud this way without losing dynamics, just make sure the audio clip isn't a solid bar of data, you want to be able to see the peaks.
@tr3290
@tr3290 3 года назад
Long story short, as much gain staging as possible and just don't use compressors! make sure its a nice looking waveform, and cut undesirable frequencies to create headroom.

The bigger idea here isn't the "7k trick" but rather the overall concept of "EQ chiseling" that pro-mixing schools / colleges teach their students. That is to EQ carve out a band for each sound / instrument based on what needs to be there and what does not need to be there. This technique ties into and stems from where sidechain "ducking" compression comes from. To key instruments [ie, kick ducks the bass (just the subs)] that share a frequency band so that the higher priority sound ducks the lower priority sound(s) which are just backing-layers.
@andrewapte9981

For those who don't know -6 lufs was the ideal loudness for dubstep tunes in 2017-2018. Tearout tunes nowadays are about -3 lufs. Honestly it depends on style but yeah I dont recommend trying to get a louder track if its unnecessary.

It's helpful to have a calibrated headphone listening volume that way you aren't fatiguing your ears. I have my headphones set so that the SPL level doesn't go above 78 ( a good listening volume). this dude is clipping in every single channel and master
@ericzmusic
@ericzmusic 3 года назад
I think it suits his style of music. Also - correct me if I'm wrong but there's not usually any distortion for clipping in the projects themselves. Once you encode something above 0db the MP3 or whatever can distort but the sample rate in project files makes it nearly irrelevant if something is clipping. Given that he uses a limiter at the end of this the encoded file should not be hitting above 0db so his technique won't produce 'clipping'. Most likely his technique will just lead to a limiter working really hard, which has it's own distinct sound.

Every beginner should know about this! Everyone "knows" they should cut the lows for all their instrument to get the "muddy stuff" out of their mix, while professionals often only cut frequencys you can't hear in order to have more headroom for mastering! Why would'nt you do that to your highs and even mids? If you can't hear it in the mix, cut it, that'll give you so much more loudness. Also a little tipp thats helped me plenty: if you find yourself twisting and turning the eq curve, go back to your source and try making adjustments there. Even if that means you have to rerecord all your guitars :/

So for someone this far in a songs production stage, how would you go about fixing that in mono? Theres a clear volume difference in mono. But it seems like he is just leaving that...or is that what the compression and clipping is for?
@AshVanGelder
@AshVanGelder 3 года назад
Jauz is doing a lot of his stereo width enhancement techniques and effects on the high end and even then he is having that stereo widening being layered instead on of on the original source for the most part to keep mono cohesion. You can have the more widened tracks be a bit more compressed to achieve something that won't affect the dynamics or phase too heavily of the mono tracks for similar effect. Also, what's going to matter most in mono when it comes to electronic music is that your low-end is cohesive all the way from 85-120Hz downwards. Club systems are terrible at processing stereo information when it comes to low end and the last thing you want is your audience to not feel the impact of the bass.

Thank you the dope tip captures, although I couldn't stand the song/noise. :) No disrespect to the fans. Just not my cup of tea. But the knowledge capture and edits are Sol State gold as always.

Don't look at it as a rule or a solidified solution to use all the time, but the concept is that you want to make space frequency wise for your important high end elements. In this particular example: The synth's important information was still legible to the listener with that cut plus the hats were able to breathe and not be masked. The underlying principle being that if certain element(s) are clashing with each other or if something is not coming through as clear as you want it, look into cutting or attenuating (turning down) parts of different tracks and layers to help things come through.

@@AshVanGelder Indeed, this is simply EQ 101 - the issue you can have with completely cutting frequencies like the "7K Trick" is that the sound becomes too clean and "cold" since you are also removing frequencies are adding to the overall sound of the synth. If you want warmth, just lower some frequencies that you want to open up a bit without a full low/high cut. Of course the low cut is still great to give room for bass which has the most chance of muddying your mix if there's too many elements in the lower-end frequencies. It's just about being a good citizen and give the individual instruments their room to breath.

not me actually liking the 01:22 version more then that mastered version, 01:22 to me sounded clean but strong, while mastered sounded almost too much again, like i would get a headache from it cause it's too much, idk

Why not use mid side eq on the leads push leads out to the sides of the mix use different stereo settings on lead reverbs so like one at 80 stereo then 100 for another and 120 for the upper high end leads. Then put the high hats and white noise through the centre your mix doesn't sound that wide tbh
